The HAL Tejas (Sanskrit pronunciation Sanskrit:तेजस) is an Indian single-seat, single-jet engine, multi-role light fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited. It is a tailless,[N 1] compound delta wing design powered by a single engine. It came from the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) programme, which began in the 1980s to replace India's ageing MiG-21 fighters. Later, the LCA was officially named "Tejas",[5][N 2] meaning "Radiant" by the then Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.[6]
Tejas has a pure double delta wing configuration (wing root leading edge sweep 50°, outer wing leading edge sweep 62.5° and trailing edge forward sweep 4°),[7] with no tailplanes or canard, and a single dorsal fin. It integrates technologies such as relaxed static stability, fly-by-wire flight control system, multi-mode radar, integrated digital avionics system, composite material structures, and a flat rated engine. It is supersonic and highly maneuverable, and is the smallest and lightest in its class of contemporary combat aircraft.[8][9]
The Tejas is the second supersonic fighter developed by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) after the HAL HF-24 Marut. The Indian Air Force (IAF) was reported to have a requirement for 200 single-seat and 20 two-seat conversion trainers, while the Indian Navy might order up to 40 single-seaters to replace its Sea Harrier FRS.51 and Harrier T.60.[10] The Tejas was cleared in January 2011 for use by Indian Air Force pilots. It received the second of three levels of operational clearance on 20 December 2013.[11][12] On 17 January 2015, the first Tejas LCA was officially inducted into the IAF, with final operational clearance (FOC) expected by late 2015. The first Tejas squadron, to be based at Bengaluru, is scheduled to enter service by 2017-2018.

The Indian Air Force Chief Arup Raha was all praises for India's first Indigenously built fighter Jet Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas soon after taking first sortie. Air Chief Marshal Raha said, "It is a wonderful aircraft, ready to fly. I had first sortie in this aircraft Tejas. It is a good aircraft and I think its a good aircraft for the airforce to fly", when an HAL officer asked to comment about the his first sortie in the aircraft.
This is for the first time that an Air force chief has flew in the LCA Tejas fighter, the indigenously designed and produced at HAL Bangalore. The 17 May 2016 is a historic day not only for Indian Air Force but for LCA Tejas. It is a major boost for ADA, HAL and DRDO as Air Force Chief heavily praised the aircraft.
The Tejas has been designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by HAL at Bangalore. The aircraft is an advanced fly by wire fighter aircraft with state of the art avionics.
The aircraft structure comprises of a large amount (more than 50%) of composites and features a quadruplex digital fly by wire control system.
The Air Chief Marshal carried out manoeuvers in the entire flying envelope of the aircraft. He carried out simulated air to air and air to ground attacks. He also assessed the advanced modes of the radar and Helmet Mounted Display Sight (HMDs). An ace fighter pilot himself, Air Chief Marshal Raha appreciated the flying qualities of the aircraft. He congratulated the entire team of ADA and HAL for their hard work in getting the LCA program to this stage. Later he also presented a gift to the fighter pilot who has flown with him.
The series production of the Tejas aircraft has already commenced at HAL Bangalore and the IAF intends to form the first squadron of the LCA on 01 July 2016 The IAF has also decided to place an order for an additional 80 Tejas in the advanced LCA MK1A configuration. The LCA MK1A will have at least 45 improvements than in the aircraft what Air Chief had flown.
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) must be keeping a close watch on the developments surrounding LCA Tejas as their JF-17 could not make much of a fighter and even opt out of dogfight in Bahrain International Air Show where LCA Tejas enthralled the world audience with its air manoeuvers.

The Light Combat Aircraft or LCA programme was launched back in 1983. It was intended to develop a completely indigenous fighter, which would replace the Soviet MiG-21. The Tejas made its maiden flight in 2001 and limited production of this aircraft commenced in 2007. Development was finally completed in 2013. It is a delta wing design, powered by a single engine. Composite materials are widely used in the airframe to keep the weight down.
The HAL Tejas multi-role fighter can carry a wide range of weapons, mainly of Russian origin. Aircraft is fitted with eight under-wing and under-fuselage hardpoints. Maximum capacity is over 4 000 kg of external ordnance and fuel. It can carry Astra, R-77 beyond visual range and R-73 or AA-11 Archer short range air-to-air missiles. Air-to-surface missiles include the Kh-59 with TV or laser guidance, Kh-35 or Kh-31 anti-ship missiles. Aircraft can also carry various bombs, including cluster or precision-guided. It is fitted with a single twin-barrel 23 mm cannon.

The Light Combat Aircraft or LCA programme was launched back in 1983. It was intended to develop a completely indigenous fighter, which would replace the Soviet MiG-21. The Tejas made its maiden flight in 2001 and limited production of this aircraft commenced in 2007. Development was finally completed in 2013. It is a delta wing design, powered by a single engine. Composite materials are widely used in the airframe to keep the weight down. The HAL Tejas multi-role fighter can carry a wide range of weapons, mainly of Russian origin. Aircraft is fitted with eight under-wing and under-fuselage hardpoints. Maximum capacity is over 4 000 kg of external ordnance and fuel. It can carry Astra, R-77 beyond visual range and R-73 or AA-11 Archer short range air-to-air missiles. Air-to-surface missiles include the Kh-59 with TV or laser guidance, Kh-35 or Kh-31 anti-ship missiles. Aircraft can also carry various bombs, including cluster or precision-guided. It is fitted with a single twin-barrel 23 mm cannon.

The Tejas has been designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by HAL at Bangalore. The aircraft is an advanced fly by wire fighter aircraft with state of the art avionics.
The aircraft structure comprises of a large amount (more than 50%) of composites and features a quadruplex digital fly by wire control system.
The Air Chief Marshal carried out manoeuvers in the entire flying envelope of the aircraft. He carried out simulated air to air and air to ground attacks. He also assessed the advanced modes of the radar and Helmet Mounted Display Sight (HMDs). An ace fighter pilot himself, Air Chief Marshal Raha appreciated the flying qualities of the aircraft. He congratulated the entire team of ADA and HAL for their hard work in getting the LCA program to this stage. Later he also presented a gift to the fighter pilot who has flown with him.
The series production of the Tejas aircraft has already commenced at HAL Bangalore and the IAF intends to form the first squadron of the LCA on 01 July 2016 The IAF has also decided to place an order for an additional 80 Tejas in the advanced LCA MK1A configuration. The LCA MK1A will have at least 45 improvements than in the aircraft what Air Chief had flown.
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) must be keeping a close watch on the developments surrounding LCA Tejas as their JF-17 could not make much of a fighter and even opt out of dogfight in Bahrain International Air Show where LCA Tejas enthralled the world audience with its air manoeuvers.

The Light Combat Aircraft or LCA programme was launched back in 1983. It was intended to develop a completely indigenous fighter, which would replace the Soviet MiG-21. The Tejas made its maiden flight in 2001 and limited production of this aircraft commenced in 2007. Development was finally completed in 2013. It is a delta wing design, powered by a single engine. Composite materials are widely used in the airframe to keep the weight down.
The HAL Tejas multi-role fighter can carry a wide range of weapons, mainly of Russian origin. Aircraft is fitted with eight under-wing and under-fuselage hardpoints. Maximum capacity is over 4 000 kg of external ordnance and fuel. It can carry Astra, R-77 beyond visual range and R-73 or AA-11 Archer short range air-to-air missiles. Air-to-surface missiles include the Kh-59 with TV or laser guidance, Kh-35 or Kh-31 anti-ship missiles. Aircraft can also carry various bombs, including cluster or precision-guided. It is fitted with a single twin-barrel 23 mm cannon.

Very recent, Indian Defence Minister Mr. Manohar said that HAL Tejas is good as Rafales in terms of performances, hence, we made an evaluation comparison of these two aircrafts.
Indian Govt. finalized the MMRCA deal with France to buy not more than 36 Rafale Omnirole fighters from Dassault Aviation for Indian Air Force. When the MMRCA tender filed before it was stated that IAF will buy 126 Rafale fighters for itself. But after several years of negotiation India finds itself that buying fighters from abroad in a large number wouldn't be a solution for future acquisition, hence GOI made changes to the deal that first batch of 18 fighters would be supplied from Dassault's plant in France and rest will be made in India.
For MMRCA program Dassault open an office in India and started consultation & negotiation with some local defense companies to assemble Rafales locally. Reliance & Tata Defense was in lead role. But Modi Govt. in Delhi decided not buy more than 2 squadron of Rafales. These 36 fighters will be used for special tasks of IAF.

Designing a safe & reliable fighter aircraft and meeting the performance not only in the present scenario but futuristic requirement too, is a challenging task for aircraft designers. LCA-Tejas is one such aircraft, which is indigenously designed and developed with cutting edge and state-of-the-art technologies. Some of these technologies are quadruplex digital fly-by-wire control system, OAC based avionics, Glass cockpit, Composite structure, robust and reliable mechanical system etc. The certification of aircraft with such technologies is equally challenging and complex process for certification authority.
With proactive participation of certification agency, LCA has successfully demonstrated its capability on 11 prototypes vehicle with 1500 plus flights under various conditions and envelopes. In addition, LCA has also demonstrated the store management capability with safe separation and with considerable accuracy of important weapons such as R-73 CCM, 1000lb, 25lb, 3kg bombs.
Having assessed its capability through design analysis, ground testing and successful flight demonstration, the LCA has been considered matured enough to be inducted into the services for operational role.
LCA has been categorized into 17 systems covering 346 LRUs ( Line Replaceable Units ) to facilitate the certification process . CEMILAC, a certification authority has played a key-role in defining the methodology to be followed for certifying such complex flying machine along with its systems, their associated software and preparation of detailed documentation towards certification. Having satisfied with the complete process followed for certification and satisfactory result of 1500 plus successful flights, CEMILAC with the association of ADA and HAL has accorded Initial Operation Clearance and issued the Release to Service Document, which authorizes squadron pilots to fly this aircraft.
This lecture brings out the detailed procedure and methodology followed in the form of journey with the sense of responsibility during certification of this state-of-the-art technology aircraft.

Chief Test pilot of India's National Flight Test Centre, Naval Captain Jaideep Avinash Maolankar, spoke at the seminar organised during the biennial Aero India Air Show held in the Indian city of Bengaluru [Bangalore] in the month of February in 2011.
He spoke about the Naval version of the Light Combat Aircraft, especially, the trainer version that is currently under development. He stressed upon some of the features that are unique to the Naval version, like addition of the LEVECON surface to enable low speed handling of the aircraft, strengthened undercarriage to sustain the stresses imparted during carrier landing, modified intake to permit air flow at low speeds. Some unique features have already been implemented, some would be put in place in the next iterative prototype, while some that have been implements, would need to undergo a review & re-design.
He also talked in depth about the flight test plans scheduled for the Naval version of the LCA, to monitor & evaluate flight parameter unique to Naval aircrafts. He touched upon the Shore Based Test Facility [SBTF] that is being constructed in Goa & the associated telemetry monitoring systems being put in place

Dr. Kota Harinarayana was born in Berhampur, Orissa, in 1943 and graduated from BHU in Mechanical Engineering. He did his post-graduation in Aero Engineering at IISc, Bangalore. He did his Ph.D. at IIT Bombay and also he is holding a Bachelor’s degree in Law.
He started his career in 1967 at HAL. He moved to DRDO HQ in 1970 and till 1982 held various positions. He rejoined HAL in 1982 as Chief Designer in Nasik Division. He was deputed to DRDO in 1985 and assumed charge as Director, ADE, Bangalore. He was appointed as LCA Programme Director in December 1985. During 1995 he was elevated as Distinguished Scientist by DRDO. As Programme Director and Chief Designer of Light Combat Aircraft, he successfully directed the project leading to flight testing and clearance for limited series production. Thanks to his efforts, India succeeded in developing a state-of-art, high technology fighter aircraft of world class named "Tejas".
