A lot of current and prospective medical students are excited about the breadth and flexibility of family medicine. Yet, they also have concerns about the future stability of the role of the family doctor. In this quick video, the role of the family doctor is explored in the context of an uncertain health care system future. Bottom line: it's strong, and as strong as any other specialty, partly because health economy studies have demonstrated the value family doctors bring to health care systems.

In the increasingly fragmented world of health care where many medical specialties limit their practice to a particular organ, disease, age or sex, family physicians are dedicated to treating the whole person across the full spectrum of ages. Family medicine's cornerstone is an ongoing, personal patient-physician relationship focused on integrated care.

Hello everyone! It has been 3 weeks since my family medicine rotation (I know, I'm really late. I'm sorry!). Reflecting on my experience, there were definitely things I loved like continuity of care and being a well rounded physician (literally I was pimped on everything). Some things that I did not realize until immersing myself in the field was how much mental health shows up at the office. I came to realize how prominent depression has become not only in my patient populations but amongst my peers and maybe even within myself.

Family medicine
Family medicine (FM), formerly family practice (FP), is a specialty devoted to comprehensive health care for people of all ages; the specialist is named a family physician or family doctor. In Europe the discipline is often referred to as general practice and a practitioner as a General Practice Doctor or GP; this name emphasises the holistic nature of this speciality, as well as its roots in the family. It is a division of primary care that provides continuing and comprehensive health care for the individual and family across all ages, genders, diseases, and parts of the body. It is based on knowledge of the patient in the context of the family and the community, emphasizing disease prevention and health promotion. According to the World Organization of Family Doctors (Wonca), the aim of family medicine is to provide personal, comprehensive, and continuing care for the individual in the context of the family and the community. The issues of values underlying this practice are usually known as primary care ethics.

Reflecting on my experience, there were definitely things I loved like continuity of care and being a well rounded physician (literally I was pimped on everything). Some things that I did not realize until immersing myself in the field was how much mental health shows up at the office. I came to realize how prominent depression has become not only in my patient populations but amongst my peers and maybe even within myself.
