La mamma morta
"La mamma morta" (They killed my mother) is an aria from act 3 of the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano.
Context
The singer is the soprano character Maddalena di Coigny, daughter of a noble family. She is telling Gérard, one of the rivals for her love, how her mother died protecting her during the turmoils of the French Revolution. Maddalena then almost gave up on life and became terribly ill. Her faithful servant Bersi had to "trade her beauty", sell herself as a prostitute, in order to save Maddalena's life. This desperation is implied in the line Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole! (Woe to those who love me well!) which is placed at the centre of the aria. From this point on, Maddalena recalls hearing the "voice of love", which promises companionship and forgetfulness of the horrors of Revolution.
Music
The aria is a favourite show piece of a spinto soprano, especially ones who specialize in the Italian idiom of verismo. In the opera, the aria is placed in the third act, after Gérard's aria "Nemico della patria... Un dì m'era di gioia", another famous aria which showcases the baritone playing Gérard. Comprising a range between C♯4 to B5, the tessitura of the aria lies in the octave between F♯4 and F♯5, with the second section lying higher than the first section. The instrumentation of the aria is especially effective, for example the string tremolo which suggested the fires that destroyed Maddalena's home. The aria itself is divided into two sections: a tender melancholic opening part which recalls Maddalena's misadventures; and a heroic second part, full of high arching phrases, which suggested the voice of the god of love. An oppure was written by Giordano as alternative to accommodate the climactic top B, providing shorter phrases and two full measure rests. A performance takes about five minutes.

Morta
Morta (died c. 1263) was wife of Mindaugas, the first known ruler of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. She was the Grand Duchess of Lithuania (until 1253) and later Queen consort of Lithuania (1253–1262). Very little is known about her life. Probably, Morta was Mindaugas' second wife as Vaišvilkas, the eldest son of Mindaugas, was already a mature man active in international politics when Morta's sons were still young and dependent on the parents. After her death, Mindaugas married her sister, the wife of Daumantas. In revenge, Daumantas allied with Treniota and assassinated Mindaugas and two of Morta's sons in 1263.
Origin
Her pagan name is unknown. The only clue into her origin or birthplace is a short mention in the comments following the treaty signed in 1219 between the Lithuanian dukes and Galicia–Volhynia. It says that Mindaugas killed many members of the Bulaičiai family, including Vismantas whose wife Mindaugas took for himself. The Hypatian Codex elaborates that Vismantas was killed in 1251–1253 during an attack against Vykintas' castle (often assumed to be in Tverai). It is generally assumed that Morta was Vismantas' wife. Lithuanian historian Edvardas Gudavičius analyzed toponyms and determined that the Bulaičiai family most likely hailed from the Šiauliai region. Based on this extrapolation, residents of Šiauliai call the city home of Morta.

In Roman mythology, Morta was the goddess of death. She is one of the Parcae, related to the Roman conception of the Fates in Greek mythology, the Moirai. Her Greek equivalent is Atropos, She is responsible for pain and death that occurs in a half wake half sleep time frame. Her father is the god of darkness and her mother is the goddess of night. She visits and warns in advance of the pain or death about to be endured.

Bog-wood

Bog-wood, also known as abonos and morta, especially amongst pipesmokers, is a material from trees that have been buried in peat bogs and preserved from decay by the acidic and anaerobic bog conditions, sometimes for hundreds or even thousands of years. The wood is usually stained brown by tannins dissolved in the acidic water. Bog-wood represents the early stages in the fossilisation of wood, with further stages ultimately forming lignite and coal over a period of many millions of years. Bog-wood may come from any tree species naturally growing near or in bogs, including oak (Quercus – "bog oak"), pine (Pinus), yew (Taxus), swamp cypress (Taxodium) and kauri (Agathis). Bog-wood is often removed from fields etc. and placed in clearance cairns. It is a rare form of timber that is "comparable to some of the world's most expensive tropical hardwoods".
Formation process
Soils that are mostly wet, sandy, gravel and clay-like -- usually found above high underground waters -- are the most suitable habitats for oak forest. These forests thrive best on lowland and slight upland soils of the diluvial geological era, the vallies of river basins being especially suitable sites for this type of oak.

The opera is obviously more complicated than this brief synopsis but this is the gist of it. "La mamma morta" is also sung by Maria Callas in the 1993 movie, "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The scene where Hanks listens to and interprets this aria is phenomenal and contributed to earning him an Oscar for his role in the movie.

Although Andy has no musical analytical skills or training, he intuits how the music in the aria moves him.His emotional expression and gesticulations reveal that he understands the music deeply, ultimately communicating his understanding to Joe ."Suddenly a pale glow flashes "..Joe is confronted with the idea his actions to Andy and others like him are motivated in the same way as those who "Killed My Mother".Prejudice/Discrimination/Hate are unequivocally responsible for her death .When he participates he is no different and no less guilty. Love is what saved ,again and again .."I bring misfortune to all those who love me!" Joe feels a sadness/guilt ,that he not only lets those who loved and saved him down ,but by remaining idle (failing to progress) and acting with hate, he is concurrently responsible for their "death" ..“Oh, that single cello!” Andy calls out in quiet anguish for sympathy to those suffering of hate; it broods rich, sad ,searing cries out against life . Andy once was in pain from anger &hatred; .."It was in this grief that love came to me "Even though he is sick and broken & cast aside it is because of Love(even for those who don't love him E.G.-Charles etc) Andy is not in misery or lonely ,but happy.Love saved him ..It is in Joe's sorrow /guilt that he too begins a spiritual and intellectual awakening to Love. He is moved to tears.In that moment they are both enlightened by the power of love via understanding(compassion) .The aria then ends. Andy and Joe comeback to reality the wiser , snapping out of it . Andy is done sharing his story (the opera & of his life)He exhales.Joe Inhales overwhelmed shakes his head.With each others help and a song they both feel a breath of new life .. No longer in doubt of Andy, Joe says ...Geez I better get out of here....Your Ready!*Spoiler Alert* During the last scene between the two Joe gives Andy an oxygen mask in a hospital bed before leaving - A final confirmation of Joe's new found appreciation ,respect and understanding for his friend /client. Andy once was in pain from anger &hatred; .."It was in this grief that love came to me "Even though he is sick and broken & cast aside it is because of Love(even for those who don't love him E.G.-Charles etc) Andy is not in misery or lonely ,but happy.Love saved him ..It is in Joe's sorrow /guilt that he too begins a spiritual and intellectual awakening to Love. He is moved to tears.In that moment they are both enlightened by the power of love via understanding(compassion) .The aria then ends. Andy and Joe comeback to reality the wiser , snapping out of it . Andy is done sharing his story (the opera & of his life)He exhales.Joe Inhales overwhelmed shakes his head.With each others help and a song they both feel a breath of new life .. No longer in doubt of Andy, Joe says ...Geez I better get out of here....Your Ready!*Spoiler Alert* During the last scene between the two Joe gives Andy an oxygen mask in a hospital bed before leaving - A final confirmation of Joe's new found appreciation ,respect and understanding for his friend /client. La mamma morta (They killed my mother) is an aria from the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano. It is sung by the role of Maddalena di Coigny (soprano). . . This video is best viewed at 720p on a full screen. All lyrics are included in Italian and in English.
A very brief summary of the plot:
The story takes place during the French Revolution. The title of the opera is also the name of the main character, André Chénier, a poet and believer in love and freedom. The story opens at the château de Coigny where Maddalena, a countess, is having a party which Chénier attends. These are the two major roles.
The third major role is Gérard, a servant, who secretly loves Maddalena. Gérard later joins Robespierre's Reign of Terror. Eventually, Chénier and Maddalena fall in love. Gérard, who moves up in the ranks, has Chénier (who opposes the reign of terror) arrested but arranges for Maddalena to be spared. Unfortunately for Gérard, Maddalena chooses to die with Chénier rather than live without him. They are both sent to the guillotine.
The opera is obviously more complicated than this brief synopsis but this is the gist of it. "La mamma morta" is also sung by Maria Callas in the 1993 movie, "Philadelphia" with Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington. The scene where Hanks listens to and interprets this aria is phenomenal and contributed to earning him an Oscar for his role in the movie.

"La mamma morta" ("The death mother") is an aria of the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano, sung by the role of Maddalena di Coigny (soprano). At this point in the opera Maddalena, daughter of a noble family, was telling Gérard, one of the men rivalling for her love, of how she has been orphaned when her mother was killed protecting her during the turmoils of the French Revolution. She almost gave up on life when her faithful servant Bersi was forced to "trade her beauty" (possibly prostituted) in order to save her when she was ill. This desperation is implied in the line Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole! (Woe to those who love me well!) which is placed at the centre of the aria. From this point onwards, Maddalena recalls hearing the "voice of love", which promises companionship and forgetfulness of the horrors of Revolution.

"La mamma morta" (They killed my mother) is an aria from act 3 of the 1896 opera Andrea Chénier by Umberto Giordano.
Context
The singer is the soprano character Maddalena di Coigny, daughter of a noble family. She is telling Gérard, one of the rivals for her love, how her mother died protecting her during the turmoils of the French Revolution. Maddalena then almost gave up on life and became terribly ill. Her faithful servant Bersi had to "trade her beauty", sell herself as a prostitute, in order to save Maddalena's life. This desperation is implied in the line Porto sventura a chi bene mi vuole! (Woe to those who love me well!) which is placed at the centre of the aria. From this point on, Maddalena recalls hearing the "voice of love", which promises companionship and forgetfulness of the horrors of Revolution.
Music
The aria is a favourite show piece of a spinto soprano, especially ones who specialize in the Italian idiom of verismo. In the opera, the aria is placed in the third act, after Gérard's aria "Nemico della patria... Un dì m'era di gioia", another famous aria which showcases the baritone playing Gérard. Comprising a range between C♯4 to B5, the tessitura of the aria lies in the octave between F♯4 and F♯5, with the second section lying higher than the first section. The instrumentation of the aria is especially effective, for example the string tremolo which suggested the fires that destroyed Maddalena's home. The aria itself is divided into two sections: a tender melancholic opening part which recalls Maddalena's misadventures; and a heroic second part, full of high arching phrases, which suggested the voice of the god of love. An oppure was written by Giordano as alternative to accommodate the climactic top B, providing shorter phrases and two full measure rests. A performance takes about five minutes.
