4 pentagon 911 segments from the US archive MPEG (NBC 110912-0954). Damage control at the Pentagon. 3 stories or 5? The original pentagon story was a plane crashing into the helicopter landing pad. The helipad crash story appears on FOX (Audrey Barnes reporting from the 110 and 27 cloverleaf/turnoff) and then sporadically throughout the day (video has CBS Dan Rather repeating it late in the day). Later, it became a plane crashing into the pentagon wall at 9:37:46 (911 commission report time). CNN and many others would, for years, think that Daryl Donley's photo (9:43) was of the actual first pentagon attack. The first part of this video (beginning 9:39:09; 83 seconds after the official time - 9:37:46 - of the first pentagon attack) is oft quoted. The later parts have been ignored. The televised video is visually boring, but important; prior to 10:14AM, these aerial shots of the pentagon show occlusive smoke on the west of north face of the 5 sided pentagon. It was never "sunny" around the heliport prior to 10:14. September 11, 2001 was a special day, a day when studio hosts had to tell their on scene reporters what their on scene reporters were seeing. We see the process here as Katie Couric brings Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski around to reporting a plane crash into the pentagon rather than reporting a bomb at the heliport. We saw the same thing happen with Jim Ryan and Dick Olly Oliver at the WTC. More interesting here is the amount of interviewing and investigating Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski claims he did in a total time of under 13 minutes (including 5 minutes of on air, leaving 8 minutes for his in depth investigation and interviews of officials, victims and Chris Brown, including travel time). Listen carefully, making sure you appreciate that all of his reports were from the same room, meaning that he went out and came back several times. Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski claims Chris Brown comes into the room, but Chris Brown does so noiselessly and, even though Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski does not ask what Chris Brown might have to say, Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski is able to discern exactly what Chris Brown would have said had Chris Brown actually been there and been given an opportunity to say something. The scripts read in this segment are about as believable as the WNYW HIGH5 nose out. Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski was a media shill, set up to report from the pentagon (Washington, DC) earlier with several reports from high pentagon officials (I guess they had little to do other than brief reporters). Interestingly, a pentagon intelligence official told Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski "earlier" to stay away from the outside of the building (elapsed 1:31), yet, when Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski heard that earlier, he didn't consider it newsworthy. Another September 11 miracle is how Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski gets on air with this story. In one minute from the pentagon attack (official time 9:37:46) until Jim "Mik" Miklaszewski appears on air (US archive MPEG time 9:39:09), he managed to persuade Katie Couric's support staff (Katie Couric was busy on air interviewing VIP Larry Johnson, former Deputy Director of the State Department's Office on Counterterrorism) that a "small blast" that shook the pentagon was an event worthy enough to interrupt her interview with Larry Johnson, former Deputy Director of the State Department's Office on Counterterrorism during the ongoing crisis in New York. Heck, a heavy truck going by on 395 could have shaken the building, yet Katie knew she had to get him on air, right away! Cut her interview with Larry Johnson, former Deputy Director of the State Department's Office on Counterterrorism off mid sentence. Must be Katie Couric's nose for news!
