Jack Markell stands up for transgender equality and combats the misinformation and scare tactics being utilized by proponents of these discriminatory bills. Gov. Markell is the only sitting governor to have signed both sexual orientation and gender identity protections in employment, housing, and public accommodations.

Jack Markell
Jack Allan Markell (born November 26, 1960) is an American politician who is the 73rd and current Governor of Delaware. A member of the Democratic Party, Markell was first elected Governor in 2008 and was sworn in on January 20, 2009.
Born in Newark, Delaware, Markell is a graduate of Brown University and the University of Chicago. Markell entered a career in business, working as a banker, consultant and senior manager for First Chicago Corporation, McKinsey & Company and Comcast Corporation. He also worked for Nextel Communications - a name that Markell coined - as the Senior Vice President for Corporate Development from 1989 to 1995.
Entering a career in politics, Markell served three terms as the State Treasurer of Delaware from 1999 to 2009. After term-limited Governor Ruth Ann Minner was prevented from running for reelection, Markell announced his intention to run for the Democratic nomination for Governor. Markell defeated Lieutenant Governor of Delaware John Carney with 51% of the vote in the Democratic primary, and defeated Republican nominee, former Delaware Superior Court Judge William Swain Lee, with 67% of the vote in the general election; becoming Delaware's first Jewish governor. Markell was then elected to a second term, defeating Republican businessman Jeff Cragg in 2012, winning by a margin of over 40%, the largest margin in any race for governor in Delaware's history.

Governor Markell on Spanish Immersion
On May 10, 2016 Delaware Governor Jack Markell joined students, staff, parents and relatives at the Townsend Early Childhood Center to celebrate the successful conclusion of our first year offering a Spanish Immersion Program. Dual-language instruction has been one of the hallmarks of Governor Markell's education platform. This year, more than 2,300 Delaware students – including 118 kindergartners here in Appoquinimink – participated in a language immersion program. By the time these Kindergartners are Seniors in High School, we hope to have provided them with the content and experience needed to earn a college-recognized Minor in Spanish. In my State of the State address, I talked about government’s obligation to do more than maintain the status quo. We must expect more to increase Delawareans’ opportunities to make the most of their talents. Our approach in recent years has helped achieve the fastest job growth in the region, while raising the quality of life for all Delawareans. The budget I signed this past week, along with other steps taken in the legislature’s just-completed session, builds on this progress. We’ve made our tax code more sensible for businesses large and small, supported research and innovation, and continued to focus on economic development in our downtowns. Delaware will also be a more attractive place for workers and businesses because of record investments in our trails and pathways, libraries, and the arts. Students of all ages will have more access to great educational opportunities because of investments in high-quality early learning, innovative programs like world language immersion, and greater chances to earn college credit and workplace experience before graduation. And, for the first time, we have recognized that our educators deserve to be paid more for taking on additional leadership responsibilities while remaining in the classroom, rather than only by becoming administrators. While all of these efforts should be celebrated, this year’s budget was especially challenging. Growing costs in some areas, particularly in health care, are unsustainable. I’m hopeful that proposals we have made will set the stage for reforms because without change, we cannot afford other key investments. By ensuring that we continue to focus on the areas that make the most difference to our future prosperity – like education and job training, research and innovation, -- we’ll make sure our state continues to become a prosperous place to live, work, and raise a family. And we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.

It’s our largest industry, injecting more than $8 billion into our economy annually, and our farmers lead the nation in the value of their products per acre. Our farmers’ markets surpassed $3 million in sales last year, every Delaware public school district buys directly from local farmers, and our family farmers are finding new markets by selling to local supermarkets who recognize the value in selling their products. The nutritional benefits of locally grown products are incredible; eating local reduces the environmental impact from shipping produce across the country and promotes a safer food supply; and starting Monday, we’ll celebrate Buy Local week, which brings attention to opportunities to purchase fruits and vegetables from local farmers. So visit a nearby farmers market and ask your grocer to point out locally-grown products you can buy for your family. Agriculture in Delaware isn’t just for family farmers. In recent years there’s been an amazing increase in community gardens all across our state, in rural areas, suburban communities, and particularly in our towns and cities, from just a handful eight years ago to more than 70 today. Community gardens increase access to healthy foods - fresh, local produce grown right here. Community gardens allow communities and neighborhoods to come together and have an amazing experience growing for the greater good. We’ll keep making this a priority, having just announced grants to 11 urban community gardens to strengthen neighborhoods and improve the quality of life in their communities. Purchasing locally-produced fruits and vegetables and the community garden movement will help our families grow healthy and strong, ensuring that our farmers continue to thrive, and grow the state’s economy. Each Memorial Day we honor the members of our armed forces who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Delawareans have fought, and died, since the earliest days of our nation, and they continue to make that sacrifice, including Warrant Officer Sean Mullen, of Dover, a Special Forces soldier serving in Afghanistan, who died three years ago when his unit was attacked by insurgents. We remember these many fallen heroes whose lives were cut short and keep their families in our thoughts and prayers. With Memorial Day’s passing it’s important that we remain committed to the spirit with which we pay tribute to them and all who serve in uniform. Today, 85,000 veterans call Delaware home, and 6,000 of our men and women are currently engaged in some form of military service. As we wish for the safe return of those deployed overseas, we must continually rededicate ourselves to ensuring that they have the opportunities they deserve at home – affordable housing, job opportunities, and a good quality of life. This past Memorial Day, Delaware’s military community came together to dedicate our National Guard Headquarters for Major Beau Biden. Beau was passionate about making our state and country a better place. He enlisted during a time of war and he devoted his life to service, by deploying with his unit to Iraq and fighting for Delawareans as our Attorney General. Naming this facility for him is an everlasting tribute to his service and to everything our National Guard represents. I have been honored to observe our National Guard and active duty military members supporting us abroad and at home in times of need. Memorial Day is over, but we remain forever grateful to each one of our service members for answering the call, recognizing that their selfless service keeps Delaware moving forward.

Chris is one of dozens of Delawareans to find rewarding careers since the program started five years ago. He and his fellow graduates have risen to challenges in fast-paced jobs in a competitive marketplace. They have a new purpose and immense satisfaction, and they’ve set an example for their peers. And increasingly, employers like Christiana Care and Bayhealth are realizing that giving individuals with disabilities a chance isn’t about charity, it’s about finding the most talented employees. Because of people like Chris, and committed employers, Delaware ranks first in the nation for helping those who receive disability benefits get a job. When we focus on the ability, it’s amazing what we can accomplish. Creating those pathways and keeping true to that commitment in the years ahead will keep Delaware moving forward.

We will not impose religious tests on admittance to our country. The Orlando shooting is yet another reminder of the frightening frequency of mass shootings. That includes denying those on terror watch lists from acquiring weapons and ensuring that authorities have sufficient time to conduct background checks. And we’ve made significant investments in professional development for teachers, better classroom materials, and early intervention to detect children’s needs. This week we celebrated an additional investment, a $7 million federal grant Delaware won to keep increasing access for families who need the most support – and in communities where our deficit of quality early learning opportunities is the greatest. At the Sussex Tech childcare center, I saw how this grant has helped enroll more students, expand teacher education, and secure needed classroom materials and equipment. At seven centers statewide this funding is also connecting families with needs assessments and referrals to services that help keep their kids growing healthy and strong. These efforts show how Delaware and the Obama Administration’s historic investments in early learning can make immediate and lasting change in the lives of our children. By continuing to live up to those commitments, we’ll create bright futures for our kids, and we’ll keep Delaware moving forward.

In his weekly message, filmed at W.B. Simpson Elementary, Governor Markell highlights the World Language Immersion Initiative and announces its expansion.
"All of our young people deserve access to the best possible education and training for their futures. That means supporting them in reading, writing, math, and science, and helping them acquire key skills for jobs in growing industries. But, we must not overlook the value of language learning," Governor Markell said. "We will ensure that students’ language proficiency doesn’t drop off when they reach middle school by allowing them to take courses in subjects like social studies and science in their immersion language. Our goal is to make Delaware the most bilingual state in the country. Doing so will create incredible opportunities for these students, and it will keep Delaware moving forward."
