Organic Lawn Care | Free Estimates in Chester & Delaware Counties
Call EcoGreen Lawn Care at 610-584-3266. Estimates are always FREE. 0:01 Introduction 0:12 My grass is free of weeds 0:32 Your lawn isn't organic? 0:48 Looking for a free organic lawn care estimate? 0:66 Click Here http://youtu.be/FVK6pt2cuMI Why is it that we must constantly apply synthetic sources of nitrogen to our lawn, gardens and plants? The reason is fairly simple in that nitrogen or any other source of plant nutrition that is abundant in air and soil isn't always in a form that the plant can process or use it. It is the health of this underground world that helps solubilize and cycle these unavailable nutrients into forms that are more usable. All of these microscopic organisms that flourish in organic lawn care have to reproduce, consume (each other), live, eat, die and excrete the things they consume. To create an oversimplified explanation of how organic lawn care helps feed our plants one must consider that the byproducts of all of the activities I just mentioned quickly improve the soil in which they occur. By building organic matter and helping to make food sources more available this underground activity can quickly generate the majority of energy that plants need to grow to their full genetic potential and all this can be obtained by implementing organic lawn care. How on earth did we grow healthy food before the invention of chemical nitrogen? We relied on the health of the soil to promote incredibly healthy and abundant food sources and there was no such thing as organic lawn care back then. So what went wrong? I imagine you could consider it irony that what we thought would produce an even better system of growing plants actually was the biggest enemy of our soil. The continued application of chemical sources of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium along with an over-reliance on chemical pesticides have actually caused the soil food web to decline anywhere we have purposely attempted to manipulate the growth of our plants. It's time to bring back organic lawn care. Sure, the repeated application of synthetic fertilizers is effective in creating healthy plants but it's done largely at the expense of the reliance on more and more preventative pesticides. Take disease or fungal activity for example. In turf care we are all familiar with nuisance diseases like leaf spot and red thread. These diseases manifest themselves on turf when all of the conditions become favorable for their appearance. The pathogen is always in the soil but when there are no active biological enemies of the particular disease it will become incredibly opportunistic and create a situation where turf appearance and quality is compromised. This rarely happens when you implement an organic lawn care program. Bieber Mill Volunteer Cleanup Olentangy River Delaware County Ohio
Bieber Mill Volunteer Cleanup Olentangy River Delaware County Ohio
19 volunteers helped cleanup the dense honeysuckle, vines and brush trees to open up Bieber Mill to the road, Chapman Road in Delaware County Ohio on the Olentangy River. Bieber Mill is classified as a ruin but the State of Ohio Department of Natural Resources wants its history and its unique architecturally structure viable. Built in 1877, Bieber Mill Ruin stands with six levels of arch windows and doors with a 42" limestone foundation. The lowest level, the basement has silted in over the years but the top of the arches are still visible. Ohio DNR has stabilized the edifice in the early 1990s by repairing the deteriorated windows and the top edge of the building. It is a ruin but no matter how many times you visit Bieber Mill you will always be awestruck by its mass and impressive design. Our Volunteers at Bieber Mill spent their power saws, tools, effort, time and energy to help support and keep Bieber Mill out for the public to enjoy and prevent damage from the tree roots eroding the foundation and vines deteriorating the mortar. Thank You is extended to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources by allowing us the opportunity to assist them in their maintenance, Preservation Parks who sent the word out that a park in Delaware County needed their assistance and Great Lakes Chapter of SPOOM ( Society for the Preservation of Old Mills ) for their interest in this amazing mill not only for Ohio residents but for citizens throughout the United States of America. November 2, 2013, 19 Volunteers made a difference and Bieber Mill will continue to be part of Ohio's historical treasures. For information about how you can help maintain Bieber Mill please visit www.spoomgreatlakes.org Bieber Mill History by Brenda Krekeler From 1843 to 1844 Shubal W. Knapp and John Blinn built a three-story frame gristmill. In 1848 Knapp and Blinn sold the mill to George Bieber for $3,000. James Bieber and George Bieber's son, assumed the operation of the mill after his father's death. James continued to expand his land holdings through purchases from family members. He acquiring over 100 acres adjacent to the mill site. James Bieber's gristmill operations were very successful. In 1876 - 1877, James Bieber and his brother Henry built an addition to the frame gristmill. On the north side of the gristmill they erected a 3 1/2 story, stone mill with a full basement and foundation. The new stone mill housed a sawmill on the first floor. The remaining space in the huge mill was never used for any milling process. The gristmill, however, continued to operate successfully. James Bieber found himself in financial difficulty in 1880 when he could not pay for the stone mill's construction. He was in debt to William H. Marvin for $13,098. Bieber tried unsuccessfully to pay Marvin, but his beautiful stone mill was auctioned at the Delaware County Courthouse on March 9, 1889. Jesse Eury paid $2,505 for the Beiber Stone Mill. Jesse Eury did not operate the mill due to poor health. Eventually the gristmill was placed back into operation. Elmer A. Wigton was the miller in 1896 and eventually became the owner. Wigton was a bachelor and lived in the mill. While Wigton operated the mill, the stone dam was destroyed in a flood. Wigton constructed a log and brush dam but it too was ruined by a flood. Elmer Wigton sold the mill in 1923. Subsequently, the Bieber Mill has had numerous owners. The old frame gristmill met the fate of many other mills and was devastated by fire. Unfortunately, due to the proximity of the stone mill, it too was destroyed. The stone mill lost its roof, floors and massive beam structure to the fire. Today, the Bieber Mill stands as one of the most impressive mills ever constructed in Ohio. The walls are 3' thick and are constructed with beautifully cut limestone. The local area is famous for its limestone and the mill is evidence of the skilled stone masons of Delaware County in 1876. The side that faces the river is still intact and provides the visitor with the impression that the mill was a gigantic structure even by today's construction standards. The other three sides of the building have deteriorated, but are still beautiful. The structure sits on the Olentangy River and has braved many floods. Three stone arches, one on the north side and two on the riverside indicate the route the water was channeled to power the waterwheel. The millrace and basement where the water flowed through the wheel have been covered with silt from the river. The stone arches are still visible several feet above the silt. The photographs depict the magnificence of the Bieber Mill but it cannot provide you with the awe-inspiring atmosphere that you can experience with a visit to the site. This is one of the most architecturally significant historic structures left in Ohio. It is currently owned by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Snow Geese in Sussex County, Delaware
Snow geese are a common winter-time sight in Southern Delaware. This flock enjoys a mild January afternoon in a field near Laurel, DE, in western Sussex County.
