A health system, also sometimes referred to as health care system or healthcare system, is the organization of people, institutions, and resources that deliver health care services to meet the health needs of target populations.
There is a wide variety of health systems around the world, with as many histories and organizational structures as there are nations. Implicitly, nations must design and develop health systems in accordance with their needs and resources, although common elements in virtually all health systems are primary healthcare and public health measures. In some countries, health system planning is distributed among market participants. In others, there is a concerted effort among governments, trade unions, charities, religious organizations, or other co-ordinated bodies to deliver planned health care services targeted to the populations they serve. However, health care planning has been described as often evolutionary rather than revolutionary.
The World Health Organization (WHO), the directing and coordinating authority for health within the United Nations system, is promoting a goal of universal health care: to ensure that all people obtain the health services they need without suffering financial hardship when paying for them. According to WHO, healthcare systems' goals are good health for the citizens, responsiveness to the expectations of the population, and fair means of funding operations. Progress towards them depends on how systems carry out four vital functions: provision of health care services, resource generation, financing, and stewardship. Other dimensions for the evaluation of health systems include quality, efficiency, acceptability, and equity. They have also been described in the United States as "the five C's": Cost, Coverage, Consistency, Complexity, and Chronic Illness. Also, continuity of health care is a major goal.
Christiana Care Health System is a network of private, non-profit hospitals providing health care services to all of Delaware and portions of seven counties bordering the state in Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey. The system includes two hospitals in Delaware, Wilmington Hospital and Christiana Hospital, as well as the Eugene du Pont Preventive Medicine & Rehabilitation Center, the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, the Center for Heart & Vascular Health, Visiting Nurse Association and a wide range of outpatient and satellite services. It is headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware.
The system's history dates to 1890, when Delaware Hospital was first opened in Wilmington. It was expanded throughout the subsequent decades. In 1965, it merged with Memorial Hospital and Wilmington General Hospital to form Wilmington Medical Center, with each of the three facilities being known as a "division", thus Delaware Hospital became known as the Delaware Division of the Wilmington Medical Center. Later it was decided to close the other two hospitals and replace them with a new one, Christiana Hospital. In 1985, the Delaware Division was renamed Wilmington Hospital.

Internal medicine or general medicine (in Commonwealth nations) is the medical specialty dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Physicians specializing in internal medicine are called internists, or physicians (without a modifier) in Commonwealth nations. Internists are skilled in the management of patients who have undifferentiated or multi-system disease processes. Internists care for hospitalized and ambulatory patients and may play a major role in teaching and research.
Because internal medicine patients are often seriously ill or require complex investigations, internists do much of their work in hospitals. Internists often have subspecialty interests in diseases affecting particular organs or organ systems.
Internal medicine is also a specialty within clinical pharmacy and veterinary medicine.
Historically, some of the oldest traces of internal medicine can be traced from Ancient India and Ancient China. Earliest texts about internal medicine are the Ayurvedic anthologies of Charaka.

Christiana Care Health System nurses share what it means to work at a Magnet®-designated health system. Only 7 percent of the nation’s hospitals hold the prestigious Magnet designation. Christiana Care was first in Delaware to achieve Magnet status in 2010, and in 2015 became the first in the state to attain re-designation, demonstrating sustained excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards. Research shows clear benefits to communities served by Magnet hospitals, including improved quality and safety of patient care, greater patient and family satisfaction, and the recruitment and retention of top nursing talent.
A powerful, new documentary on the medical consequences of gun and gang violence. "The Ripple Effect" shows live footage from the emergency room department at Christiana Care's Christiana Hospital, Delaware as health care teams race to save live of gunshot victims. The documentary features interviews with Christiana Care's trauma surgeons and trauma nurses, as well as a former gang member who had been treated at the hospital.

This presentation examines controversies surrounding the validity and meaningfulness of meta-analysis. Dr. Kolm is Director of Biostatistics at Christiana Care Health System, Research Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University and Director of the Biostatistical Core of the Bridging Advanced Developments for Exceptional Rehabilitation (BADER) Consortium funded by the Department of Defense. He has over 30 years of experience in consulting with investigators in the design and analysis of clinical trials, retrospective and observational studies, and large patient registries. He has considerable experience in the application of general and generalized linear and hierarchical models, classification and tree regression, time-to-event analysis, multivariate analysis, cost-effectiveness...
Reducing selection bias is a concern when analyzing observational datasets. IPW (inverse probability weighting) and PSBB (propensity score bin bootstrapping) are two methods used to address selection bias. This presentation will demonstrate how IPW and PSBB capture information from all patients with balance achieved for measured confounders via propensity score adjustment. Dr. Zugui Zhang is the lead Biostatistician for the Value Institute of Christiana Care Health System and research assistant professor at Thomas Jefferson University. He has a broad background in health outcomes research, public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics. He has worked extensively on large international and national, multi-center, randomized clinical trials and observational studies.
Application of times series methods to 30-day readmission rates of PCI patients in the BRIDGES database. Methods include interrupted time series, cross-correlation and Granger causality. Dr. Paul Kolm, DAC-CTR Associate Director, is Director of Biostatistics at Christiana Care Health System, and Research Professor of Medicine at Thomas Jefferson Medical College. He has been and is a co-investigator and lead biostatistician on several NIH- and industry-funded research projects. Dr. Kolm is a statistical editor for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology and a member of the American Heart Association Epidemiology, Prevention, Outcomes and Behavioral study section. He has considerable experience in the application of general and generalized linear and hierarchical models, classifi...
Propensity Scores matching is used to adjust for selection bias in non-randomized studies to compare the effectiveness of interventions when there are significant baseline differences between the intervention groups. This presentation will discuss how to estimate the propensity score, form matched sets of subjects, assess the similarity of baseline factors between intervention groups, and estimate the effect of treatment in matched samples. He has a broad background in health outcomes research, public health, epidemiology, and biostatistics. He has worked extensively on large international and national, multi-center, randomiz...
Observational Study aims to draw inference about the possible effect of a treatment on subjects from an empirical comparison of treated and controlled groups, which is widely used in all kinds of healthcare and medical research when clinical trials are not applicable in practice. In this presentation, I will focus on the overview of Observational Study in terms of conceptual definition, study design, and biases adjustment. An instrumental variable based approach will be mainly introduced for its superiority in statistical inference to avoid the strong “no unmeasured confounders” assumption in observational studies. Dr. Pan Wu is the Senior Biostatistician for the Value Institute at the Christiana Care Health System. He received his PhD in Statistics from the Department of Biostatistics ...
