Tom Harrell (born June 16, 1946) is an American composer and arranger and a jazz trumpeter and flugelhornist.
Harrell has won awards and grants, including multiple Trumpeter of the Year awards from Down Beat magazine,SESAC Jazz Award, BMI (Broadcast Music Incorporated) Composers Award, and Prix Oscar du Jazz. He received a Grammy nomination for his big band album, Time's Mirror.
He has been recorded on over 260 albums (according to the discography on his website) and continues to compose, record and tour around the world.
Tom Harrell was born in Urbana, Illinois, but moved to the San Francisco Bay Area at the age of five. He started playing trumpet at eight, and within five years was playing gigs with local bands. In 1969 he graduated from Stanford University with a music composition degree and joined Stan Kenton's orchestra, touring and recording with them throughout 1969.
After leaving Kenton, Harrell played with Woody Herman's big band (1970–1971), Azteca (1972), the Horace Silver Quintet (1973–1977), with whom he made five albums, the Sam Jones-Tom Harrell Big Band, the Lee Konitz Nonet (1979–1981), George Russell, and the Mel Lewis Orchestra (1981). From 1983 to 1989 he was a pivotal member of the Phil Woods Quintet and made seven albums with the group. In addition, he recorded albums with Vince Guaraldi for whom he also did some arranging for the Peanuts television specials, Bill Evans, Dizzy Gillespie, Ronnie Cuber, Bob Brookmeyer, Lionel Hampton, Bob Berg, Cecil Payne, Bobby Shew, Philip Catherine, Ivan Paduart, Joe Lovano, Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra, Charles McPherson, David Sánchez, Sheila Jordan, Jane Monheit, the King's Singers and Kathleen Battle among others. Harrell is featured on Bill Evans' final recording, We Will Meet Again, which won a Grammy Award for Best Instrumental Jazz Performance, Group.
Trumpeter-composer-arranger Tom Harrell's working bands over the years have usually been a jazz quintet. The current lineup (2006 to present) of the Tom Harrell Quintet comprises Wayne Escoffery on tenor saxophone, Danny Grissett on piano and Fender Rhodes, Ugonna Okegwo on acoustic bass and Johnathan Blake on drums. That the group has worked together consistently for over five years is somewhat unusual in the world of jazz today, and many critics attribute the group's distinctive sound to its longevity. Harrell has recorded four albums with this group: Light On, Prana Dance, Roman Nights, and the most recent, The Time of the Sun.
Some of Harrell's previous quintets include,

Jim Hall may refer to:
This is an incomplete list of notable jazz music festivals, broken down geographically. The festivals mentioned here should have at least some international recognition. This list generally excludes multi-genre festivals with only a partial focus on jazz, though such fusion festivals may be listed under individual subtopics of Jazz festivals by country.
Jazz has appeared in various festivals since the turn of the century, after the genre originated in African American communities during the late 19th and early 20th century. As jazz spread around the world, it drew on different national, regional, and local musical cultures, giving rise to many distinctive styles. New Orleans jazz began in the early 1910s, combining earlier brass band marches, French quadrilles, biguine, ragtime and blues with collective polyphonic improvisation. In the 1930s, swing big bands, Kansas City jazz, and Gypsy jazz were the prominent styles. Bebop and cool jazz emerged in the 1940s, and the 1950s saw free jazz, hard bop, and modal jazz. Jazz-rock fusion appeared in the late 1960s and early 1970s, combining jazz improvisation with rock rhythms, electronic instruments and the highly amplified stage sound of rock, with large festivals exhibiting the sounds in response. In the early 1980s, a commercial form of jazz fusion called "smooth jazz" became successful, and other jazz styles include Afro-Cuban jazz and various fusion genres.

Filmed for the Sound Tracks: Quick Hits series by the Talbot Players in association with PBS Arts (http://www.facebook.com/soundtrackstv). You may not recognize Tom Harrell's face, but if you grew up in America, you've almost certainly heard his music. He arranged Vince Guaraldi's music for the "Peanuts" Thanksgiving Special, and you can hear his trumpet underneath the antics of Snoopy and Woodstock. But that slice of priceless Americana represents just one of the many incarnations of Tom Harrell. As a teenager, Tom was already jamming with professional groups in the San Francisco Bay area. He played with the Stan Kenton and Woody Herman big bands, and became a pioneer of jazz fusion in the 70s, working with groups like the Latin-Jazz-Rock band Azteca. You can use any superlative you...

This 1988 studio date is one of the overlooked treasures in the considerable discography of Jim Hall, possibly due to the label's low-key promotion and less than eye-catching cover art. It is easy why to understand why artists like Art Farmer and Paul Desmond omitted a pianist after hearing a release such as this one, because it would only clutter Hall's soft yet complete accompaniment. Joined by Tom Harrell (heard mostly on fluegelhorn), bassist Steve LaSpina, and drummer Joey Baron, this CD is a delight from start to finish. The interaction of the musicians in the opener, a lively, waltzing "With a Song in My Heart," makes it sound like they have been a working unit for years. The well-conceived arrangement of "Where or When," which Hall dedicated to Basie guitarist Freddie Green (who di...

As part of the first Blue Note Jazz Festival, trumpeter and composer Tom Harrell and his quintet played a very special set at The Highline Ballroom. In lieu of his next upcoming project, a classical project featuring the music of Debussy and Ravel, Tom's set was titled "Jazz Meets Classical: Debussy and Ravel." He even introduced and played nine new pieces with his quintet and a string section. Even though He went back to his classical training roots, the new pieces were explosive and the strings enhanced the jazz component of his work. The music was written for his chamber ensemble that includes members of his quintet with tenor and soprano saxes, flute, violin, cello, piano, guitar, bass and drums. The chamber ensemble for the Highline Ballroom set features: Wayne Escoffery - soprano and...

Something tells me by the way you're acting
You've done this once before
You should see this like I hear it
Cause your actions don't match your words
You play it to be dumb
More than anyone
I tried to be your friend last night
You doubt and try to leave everything out
I know that something isn't right
Nothing ever comes from nothing
At least from what I've seen
You can go on pretend to be someone
I'll keep playing me
Re-write and compromise
Right through your whole life
I tried to be your friend last night
You doubt and try to leave everything out
I know that something isn't right
You fell down on the rooftop of an emotional high
Now all you hear is singing on the radio late at night
But something isn't right
You've felt it all night
You say no one cares
But I was there
I tried to be your friend last night
You doubt and try to leave everything out
