Voronet was built by Stephen the Great in 1488, as is inscribed in the votive stone above the entrance, on the site of the wooden hermitage of the famous Daniil the Hermit. Architecturally, it belongs to the simpler of Stephen's foundations, with a triconch plan, a spire above the nave and fragmented roof. In 1547, Metropolitan Grigorie Rosca added the closed exonarthex (porch), perforated by two large windows above the entrances.
The splendour and fame of Voronet is due to the exterior murals. Here, the Moldavian masters had the knowledge and skill to adapt and interpret original models from the Byzantine world and add original themes, with elements from everyday life and from nature, and then give them their unique colouring, using lapis lazuli pigment, whence the celebrated "Voronet blue".
