Having spent a decent chunk of time of Greece it didn't take us to develop a love for Greek cuisine. For our final food video in Athens, Greece we visit a traditional Greek restaurant where we dine on dishes such Greek salad, Saganaki (fried-cheese) and Moussaka. If the food wasn't a highlight enough in and of itself we had an extra bonus of having a talented Greek musician playing traditional music during our meal.
Our favorite Greek Cuisine in Athens, Greece Travel Video Transcript:
It's lunchtime here in Athens and we are starving because we've been walking around all morning. So we found a little restaurant. We're going to be eating Greek food obviously. And we are starting out with some homemade bread and black olives. Those are really good olives.
The pit. Hahaha.
Bread with olive oil. Can't go wrong.
So we've now been in Greece long enough to know what some of our favorite foods are. And we're having three of them here. We're having Greek salad which doesn't need too much of an introduction, Moussaka and also Saganaki which is a fried Greek cheese.
Yum, now we are just waiting for our order.
So first up we're having something called Saganaki which is a fried cheese. And it gets its name from the pan that it is fried in. Apparently it has two handles and just have a look over here. It's a nice chunk of cheese. Now it is nice and golden from being fried. And it also comes with a little bit of lemon which we can drizzle over top. Oh yeah, drizzle, drizzle, drizzle. And this can be made with three different types of cheese. You can have Gruyère, Halloumi or Sheep's milk. And it is very very salty and very greasy since it has been fried. And it is probably not very healthy but it is so good that we just keep ordering it with every meal here in Athens. Let's have another bite.
Mmmmm. That is really good guys. Good stuff.
And what are you having? Now this next dish is one of personal favorites. It's called Moussaka. And let's take a look down at it. So you can see that there is a layer of Béchamel sauce, you also have minced meat, you have potatoes and you have eggplant.
So apparently this is a pretty old recipe, right? Yeah, this dish dates back to the former Ottoman Empire. And you can also find it in countries such as Albania and Turkey presently.
So time for me to finally have a bit of this. Wow, it is so thick! It's like a Lasagna almost. It almost looks like a Sheppard's Pie to me. Yeah, that's actually a better comparison. Mmmm. That's fantastic.
And because we're trying to keep this a balanced meal we did order a salad. A Greek salad because this is Greece. So as you can see we've got tomatoes, feta, cucumbers, black olives. We've got some peppers and olive oil drizzled all over top with a little bit of oregano sprinkled as well. So it looks really really good. Let's take a bit of that. Oh yeah. Don't forget the feta cheese. Yeah, that's right.
Let's get a bit of everything. Onions. Cheese. Tomato. Hahaha.
Mmmm.
That's really nice. The olive oil has a really special flavor here. You can almost taste the olives. It's just really good and a nice and refreshing salad. Really nice.
And price point for that delicious Greek meal? So for all of that food we paid about thirty Euros. Keep in mind we did eat in a touristy zone and if you're in a more residential area you can maybe expect to pay 20, 25 Euros for that.
This is part of our Travel in Greece series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Greek culture, Greek arts, Greek foods, Greek religion, Greek cuisine and Greek people.

It's time for another food battle! This time we roam around in Athens, Greece to sample some delicious Greek Street Food. In one corner we have souvlaki pita and in the other gyro pita. Come find out what these two Greek sandwiches are all about in our latest taste test food video.
Greek Street Food in Athens, Greece: Gyros vs Souvlaki Travel Video Transcript:
So the sun is starting to set and dinner time is quickly approaching. We've been walking around the Athens flea market and we've worked up an appetite so right now we are stopping for some Greek food. We've found a little joint that is serving up Pita Souvlaki and Pita Gyro. So we've ordered up one of each. Ta da! Doesn't that look good? So yeah, ready for another taste test in Greece.
What do we call this in Greece vs back at home? Alright, so here's the deal. Over here it is called Gyros but where I grew up in Canada and also visiting in the US it was called gyro. So it is kind of hard for me to say it as gyros but I'm starting to get used to it. So when you're in Greece call it the gyros.
So what is fascinating is that gyros means to turn. It is basically rotisserie meat that is cooked on a skewer and you can have all kinds of different things. There is chicken, pork, lamb. So pick whatever you want and it is stuffed inside of a pita.
So enough of me rambling on. Let's actually try it here. Mmmm.
That's one of my favorite sandwiches I've had in a while. It's so good. The meat is really tender. I really like the sauce. Tzatziki. Yeah, the tzatziki sauce and you've also got a lot of onions and tomatoes too, so really good stuff.
So for mine I got the pita souvlaki. And souvlaki is basically meat on a skewer so it is not shaved meat like Sam's. So I've got nice chunks in there. And also it comes with French fries, onions and tomatoes. And we can't forget the tzatziki sauce which is made with yogurt, garlic and cucumber. Delicious! So I'm going to have another bite here. We've got a quality control bite right now.
Mmmmm.
So so good guys.
So you polished that off quickly. Yeah, I devoured that. Seriously, that was really fast. In terms of price this is basically the cheapest and most affordable meal that you can get in Greece. And it is so delicious. Where we picked it up here, which is a super touristy area, it was 2 Euros each. The giant ones were 3.50 and if you're walking down say more of a residential area, somewhere that is not in a touristy zone, you can pick one up in the one to two Euros range.

Greek cuisine is a Mediterranean cuisine. Contemporary Greek cookery makes wide use of olive oil, vegetables and herbs, grains and bread, wine, fish, and various meats, including lamb, poultry, rabbit and pork. Also important are olives, cheese, eggplant (aubergine), zucchini (courgette), and yogurt. Greek desserts are characterized by the dominant use of nuts and honey. Some dishes use filo pastry.
Mezés (μεζές) is a collective name for a variety of small dishes, typically served with wines or anise-flavored liqueurs as ouzo or homemade tsipouro. Orektika is the formal name for appetizers and is often used as a reference to eating a first course of a cuisine other than Greek cuisine. Dips are served with bread loaf or pita bread. In some regions, dried bread (paximadhi) is softened in water.

“This showstopper of a pie from grandmother, Christina Phillips, is full of green goodness. Christina is from Northern Greece and still cooks her treasured recipes; her protégé is her grandson, top chef Matt Germanchis, who leads the Pei Modern restaurants in Sydney and Melbourne.” Maeve O'Meara
Ingredients
Horta (wild greens) and feta
500 g (1 lb 2 oz) English spinach
500 g (1 lb 2 oz) silverbeet (Swiss chard)
500 g (1 lb 2 oz) nettles or bitter greens like chickory, dandelion
large handful of sorrel, optional
60 ml (2 fl oz/¼ cup) olive oil
2 eggs, beaten
400 g (14 oz) Greek sheep’s feta
salt and pepper
Filo pastry
1.2 kg (2 lb 7 oz) plain flour, sifted
1 tsp salt
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp dry yeast
500 ml (17 fl oz/2 cups) lukewarm water
1 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil
Basting mixture
120 g (4½ oz) butter, melted
125 ml (4 fl oz/½ cup) extra-virgin olive oil
Cook's notes
Oven temperatures are for conventional; if using fan-forced (convection), reduce the temperature by 20˚C. | We use Australian tablespoons and cups: 1 teaspoon equals 5 ml; 1 tablespoon equals 20 ml; 1 cup equals 250 ml. | All herbs are fresh (unless specified) and cups are lightly packed. | All vegetables are medium size and peeled, unless specified. | All eggs are 55-60 g, unless specified.
Instructions
Resting time 1 hour
To prepare the horta and feta, wash the greens and chop roughly, keeping the sorrel aside if using. Wilt the spinach, silverbeet and nettles in a dry, covered saucepan over low heat for about 10 minutes until tender, adding the sorrel and removing the lid towards the end. Cook until most of the liquid has evaporated and the mixture is very soft. Set aside to cool for about 5 minutes.
Heat 3 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat and return the green mixture to the saucepan until just sizzling. Add the eggs and remove from the heat. Stir well, ensuring the egg does not curdle — it is just to thicken the mixture.
Add 200 g (7 oz) of crumbled feta, cook at a low temperature for 4 minutes, then remove from the heat and strain the excess liquid. Cool then mix in the remaining olive oil, seasoning and 100 g (3½ oz) of feta. Refrigerate until required.
For the filo pastry, mix the dry ingredients, water and oil in a large bowl and knead for about 10 minutes until it has a smooth bread dough consistency. Rest for an hour at room temperature.
While the dough is resting, melt the butter and add the extra-virgin olive oil.
Once rested, divide the dough into 12 balls. Knead six of the balls, adding flour as necessary.
With a long, thin rolling pin, roll each ball into 20 cm (8 in) circles. Add 2 tablespoons of the butter/oil mixture to five of the circles and brush evenly with a pastry brush. Pile one on top of the other, finishing with the one without the oil. Press the layers together well with your fingertips.
Roll out with the rolling pin, turning, to make the pastry as large as possible. Add flour if the rolling pin becomes sticky. Towards the end stretch by hand, being careful not to break the pastry.
Once the pastry is at the desired thickness, around 2–3 mm, line a 50 cm (19 in) baking pan with baking paper and lightly brush with the butter oil mixture.
Roll the pastry onto the rolling pin, then starting at the edge of the pan gently unroll the pastry, let it overhang at the edges. Using the pastry brush, gently push the pastry into the edges. Brush with butter/olive oil mixture.
Spoon the horta mix into the pan and spread almost to the edges. Crumble 100 g (3½ oz) feta over the top.
Of the remaining six pastry balls, roll out three at a time, repeating the process above to make two separate layers. Gently roll the first pastry circle over the pan and unroll, moving the rolling pin from side to side to achieve a folded effect. Brush with the butter oil mixture and repeat with the final pastry circle.
To finish, twist and plait the edges. Then cut the pastry into squares. Brush lightly with the butter/oil mixture.
Cook in a wood-fired oven at 200°C (390°F) for 15 minutes, then sprinkle with a little water by dipping your fingers in the water and flicking onto the pastry. Cook for a further 10–15 minutes, or until the pastry is golden and flaky.
