Western Europeans were not the only despoilers of the Romaion Empire to refer to it by the name of Rome. In the eleventh century, a branch of the Seljuk Turks established a Sultanate in Asia Minor carved out of land in Asia Minor. The Sultanate's territory had been severed from the Empire after the Battle of Manzikert [1071] in which Emperor Romanus IV [reigned 1067-1071] fell into the hands of the Turks as a prisoner. This Turkish state was called "Rum." from Rome. The Sultanate of Rum continued until after 1300 with its capital at Konya [Iconium].
The later Ottoman Turks adopted the term "Rumelia" to designate the portions of the Balkan Peninsula that they acquired from the Romaioi in the fourteenth century. "Rumelia" was a dimunitive word. If Anatolia was Rome [Rum], than the European territories were Lesser Rome [Rumelia]. The name "Rumelia" survived into the nineteenth century. After a Turkish defeat at the hands of Russia, the two combatant governments signed the Treaty of San Stefano [1877]. The Treaty included a provision to create a "Principality of Eastern Rumelia" under Russian "protection" on land now in Bulgaria. The attempt to create Eastern Rumelia never came to fruition. After diplomatic pressure from other powers, the Treaty of San Stefano underwent significant modification at the Congress of Berlin in 1878. Eastern Rumelia vanished before it came into proper existence.
One might wonder why the name "Romania" became applied to the present nation called Romania. The association of the name "Romania" with the present nation "Romania"stems from the nineteenth century. In their first appearances in the historical record of the Middle Ages, the Romanians were called "Vlachs" by chroniclers from Hungary and Constantinople. A principality called "Wallachia" emerged among the Vlachs before 1300. Separate Vlach principalities of Moldavia and Transylvania followed. Later, scholars realized that the Vlach language derived from Latin; Vlach was a sister language to Italian, French and Spanish. How did Latin speakers find their way to this remote part of Europe north of the Danube River? Scholars developed the theory that the Vlachs were descended from Roman colonists and Latinized natives who lived in the area north of the Danube River during the second and third centuries AD. In the period, the region constituted the Roman province of Dacia. Whether the theory is right or not, it became the basis of Romanian nationalist feeling in the nineteenth century. The idea of a Roman descent gave Vlachs new pride in themselves. After Wallachia and Moldavia coalesced into a single entity in 1859, the name "Romania" was selected in 1862 to describe the combined state. At the time, Romanian unity and independence required the support of France under Emperor Napoleon III [1852-1870]. The "Latin connection" with France aided the Romanian cause by inspiring French interest in their "sister nation" of Romania.
In light of the late date at which modern Romania acquired its name, it appears clear that earlier, the term "Romania" referred to the territory where the Greek speaking "Romaioi" lived. For more than a millennium, the state that we call, inaccurately, the Byzantine Empire was "Romania." After the end of the Empire, Greek speaking inhabitants of the Ottoman Empire continued to call themselves "Romaioi."
Modern Greeks call themselves "Hellenes," like the ancient Greeks did. The switch from "Romaioi" back to "Hellene," like the switch from "Vlach" to "Romanian," came from the politics of nationalism in modern times. Greeks needed Western European help to become independent in the early nineteenth century. The Greeks were not likely to attract assistance if the Western peoples thought of Greeks as Byzantines. However, if the Greeks were imagined as the children of Plato and Pericles, then the sympathies of educated Westerners, steeped in the Classical tradition, would be with Greece. In the Greek Revolution of 1832, the "Philhellenic"[Greek loving] sympathies of Britain and other European governments were deeply engaged. Intervention on behalf of Greek independence proved decisive. The name of "Hellene" was revived in order to create a national image which rejected the "Byzantine" past.

Bucharest was first mentioned in documents as early as 1459. Since then it has gone through a variety of changes, becoming the state capital of Romania in 1862 and steadily consolidating its position as the centre of the Romanian mass media, culture and arts. Its eclectic architecture is a mix of historical (neo-classical), interbellum (Bauhaus and Art Deco), Communist-era and modern. In the period between the two World Wars, the city's elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite earned Bucharest the nickname of the "Little Paris of the East" (Micul Paris).Although many buildings and districts in the historic centre were damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes and Nicolae Ceaușescu's program of systematization, many survived. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom.
According to January 1, 2009 official estimates, Bucharest proper has a population of 1,944,367. The urban area extends beyond the limits of Bucharest proper and has a population of 2 million people. Adding the satellite towns around the urban area, the metropolitan area of Bucharest has a population of 2.15 million people. According to unofficial data, the population is more than 3 million. Bucharest is the 6th largest city in the European Union by population within city limits.
Economically, Bucharest is the most prosperous in Romania and is one of the main industrial centres and transportation hubs of Eastern Europe. The city has a broad range of convention facilities, educational facilities, cultural venues, shopping arcades and recreational areas.
The city proper is administratively known as the Municipality of Bucharest (Municipiul București), and has the same administrative level as a county, being further subdivided into six sectors. ( source Wikipedia )

Inhabited by the ancient Dacians, today's territory of Romania was conquered by the Roman Empire in 106, when Trajan's army defeated the army of Dacia's ruler Decebalus ( Dacian Wars). The Roman administration withdrew two centuries later, under the pressure of the Goths and Carpi.
The Romanian people was formed by the Romanization of the Roman Province of Dacia. The Romanians are descended from local populations: Dacians (Getae, Thracians) and Roman legionnaires and colonists. In the course of the two wars with the Roman legions, between 101 - 102 A.D. and. 105 - 106 A.D. respectively, the emperor Trajan succeeded after in defeating the Dacians and the greatest part of Dacia became a Roman province. The colonization with Roman or Romanized elements, the use of the Latin language and the assimilation of Roman civilization as well as the intense development of urban centres led to the Romanization of the autochthonous population. The intermarriage of Dacians with Roman colonists, formed the Daco-Roman population, which is part of the ethnogenesis process of the Romanian people. This process was concluded by the 10th century when the assimilation of the Slavs by the Daco-Romanians was completed.
Kings of the Dacians
The best known Dacian king were Dromihetes, Burebista and Decebalus who organized powerful states and proved to be skilful military strategists. The Dacian king reigned with the help of a council of noblemen and with the advice of the high priest.
Dromihetes is known due to his conflict around 300 BC with Lisimah, a general of Alexander the Great who became king of Thrace after Alexander's death. Lisimah attempted to extend his kingdom to the north of the Danube, but Dromihetes wanted Lisimah to return some fortresses from the south of the Danube. Dromihetes won all of the battles capturing Agatocles, the son of Lisimah. Dromihetes won again in 292 BC when Lisimah took his army across the Danube. Dromihetes' capital was Helis which is generally thought to have been in Muntenia. Other kings in this period were Zalmodegicos and Rhemaxos of Dobrogea and Oroles of Transylvania.
Burebista reigned from 82 BC to around 44 BC, probably inheriting the position from his father. The kingdom of Burebista included all the Dacian tribes, plus some others. When Burebista offered to support Pompey against Caesar (48 BC) his kingdom stretched from the Beskids mountains in the north, the Middle Danube in the west, the river Dniester in the east, and to the Balkan Mountains in the south. Burebista developed a system of fortifications in the Orastie mountains as a natural stronghold. Burebista notable military campaigns were:
•60-59 BC - successful against the Celts that were threatening Dacia from the north-west
•55 BC - conquered the Greek cities on the Black Sea coast, from Olbia to Apollonia
•The retreat of the Scythians to the river Don
•after 48 BC - defeated the Celts to the north-west and the south-west of Dacia
The kingdom split into smaller kingdoms after Burebista's death. The kings reigning from Sarmizegetusa situated in the Orastie Mountains were Deceneu, Comosicus, Scorilo, and Duras.
Decebal reigned from 87 AD to 106 AD, having been given the throne from Duras. He was previously the leader nobleman of the Dacians at Tapae. He was originally called Diurpaneus, but took the name of Decebal meaning "the powerful one". Decebal's state was smaller than that of Burebista with the borders being the rivers Tisza in the west, Siret in the east, Danube in the south and the northern Carpathians.
The Dacian state was powerful enough to win a confrontation with the Romans during the reign of Domitian (87-89). It took a further two fierce wars during 101 -102 AD and 105-106 AD for the Roman empire under Emperor Trajan (98-117) to defeat Decebal and turn most of his kingdom into the Roman province called Dacia.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate Walkthrough! Walkthrough and Let's Play Playthrough of Assassin's Creed Syndicate with Live Gameplay and Commentary in 1080p high definition at 60 fps. This Assassin's Creed Syndicate walkthrough will be completed showcasing every level, mission, boss, and story ending.
Story:
In 1868, at the tail end of the Industrial Revolution, with the Assassin Brotherhood all but eradicated, twins Jacob (Paul Amos) and Evie Frye (Victoria Atkin) leave Crawley for London and arrive to find a city controlled by the Templars, with both the Church and the Monarchy losing their power. Raised as Assassins to follow the Creed, Jacob and Evie aim to take back the city from Templar control by infiltrating and uniting London's criminal underworld, aided by notable figures of the era such as novelist Charles Dickens, biologist Charles Darwin and inventor Alexander Graham Bell, foundational philospher of modern nursing, Florence Nightingale and Queen Victoria.
Gameplay:
Assassin's Creed Syndicate marks the first time in the series where the player can freely switch between two different protagonists. It will also be the first main entry in the series to feature a playable female protagonist. (Assassin's Creed III: Liberation featured a female protagonist, but that game is not a part of the main series. Male lead Jacob Frye is meant to be more of a hot-headed brawler, specialized in close combat, while his twin sister Evie is strong in stealth and relies on her intelligence and wit. The Assassins' main weapons this time around include brass knuckles, a compact revolver, a cane sword and the traditional Nepalese curved kukri knife and combat is faster-paced than before with latency having been cut in half and multiple enemies attacking the player at once. Additionally new travelling systems make their debut in the game, such as a rope launcher which allows the player to rappel up structures as well as create a zip-line between buildings, and carriages, which can all be piloted or simply occupied by the player, and trains. The rooftops of moving carriages can also be the setting of fights and parkour chases. London in the game will be approximately 30% larger than Paris in Unity and consist of six boroughs: Westminster, the Strand, the City of London, Whitechapel, Southwark and Lambeth. The game will have no multiplayer mode, and will not feature a companion app, which was introduced in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. Side missions in the game have been designed to reflect the fight for power in London and are cohesive to the main story of the game. Players can also kidnap enemies for ransom then put them inside horse carriages and take them to a drop-off point.

In Paris and cities across Europe, thousands of Romanian expatriates struggled to cast their vote in their country’s presidential elections.
They queued outside Romanian embassies on Sunday from early in the morning, often in bad weather. By the time polling stations closed many had been unable to vote.
The same had happened in the first round on November 2. Despite this, the Romanian government refused to open extra polling stations causing anger at home and abroad.
One Romanian voter living in Germany said: “It’s the government’s responsibility to organise the elections. That’s what happened in the first round, and nothing has been done this time to avoid the same mistakes being repeated again”.
Thousands gathered in city squares across Romania to show their solidarity with the expats.
Many believe this is what inspired voters to turn against the government and vote in surprise winner Iohannis.
An estimated four million Romanians live abroad, most of them in Europe.
The surprise result is being seen as the biggest electoral upset in modern Romanian history.

The sights of Bucharest, Romania - 1930's - 1994's - Chronological order

Bucharest (/ˈbjuːkərɛst/; Romanian: București, pronounced [bukuˈreʃtʲ] ( listen)) is the capital and largest city, as well as the cultural, industrial, and financial centre of Romania. It is located in the southeast of the country, at 44°25′57″N 26°06′14″ECoordinates: 44°25′57″N 26°06′14″E, lies on the banks of the Dâmbovița River, less than 70 km (43.5 mi) north of the Danube River.
Bucharest was first mentioned in documents in 1459. It became the capital of Romania in 1862 and is the centre of Romanian media, culture and art. Its architecture is a mix of historical (neo-classical), interbellum (Bauhaus and art deco), communist-era and modern. In the period between the two World Wars, the city's elegant architecture and the sophistication of its elite earned Bucharest the nickname of "Little Paris" (Micul Paris).[6] Although buildings and districts in the historic city centre were heavily damaged or destroyed by war, earthquakes, and above all Nicolae Ceaușescu's program of systematization, many survived. In recent years, the city has been experiencing an economic and cultural boom.[7]
According to 2011 census, 1,883,425 inhabitants live within the city limits,[4] a decrease from the figure recorded at the 2002 census.[2] The urban area extends beyond the limits of Bucharest proper and has a population of about 1.9 million people.[8] Adding the satellite towns around the urban area, the proposed metropolitan area of Bucharest would have a population of 2.27 million people.[9] According to Eurostat, Bucharest has a larger urban zone of 2,183,091 residents.[5] According to unofficial data, the population is more than 3 million.[10] Bucharest is the 6th largest city in the European Union by population within city limits, after London, Berlin, Madrid, Rome, and Paris.
Economically, Bucharest is the most prosperous city in Romania[11] and is one of the main industrial centres and transportation hubs of Eastern Europe. The city has big convention facilities, educational institutes, cultural venues, traditional "shopping arcades" and recreational areas.
The city proper is administratively known as the "Municipality of Bucharest" (Municipiul București), and has the same administrative level as that of a national county, being further subdivided into six sectors, each governed by a local mayor.
Etymology[edit]
The name of București has an uncertain origin: tradition connects the founding of Bucharest with the name of Bucur who was either a prince, an outlaw, a fisherman, a shepherd, or a hunter, according to different legends. In Romanian the word stem bucurie means 'joy', ("happiness")[12] and it is believed to be of Dacian origin.[13]
There are other etymologies given by early scholars, including the one of an Ottoman traveler, Evliya Çelebi, who said that Bucharest was named after a certain "Abu-Kariș", from the tribe of "Bani-Kureiș". In 1781, Franz Sulzer claimed that it was related to bucurie (joy), bucuros (joyful) or a se bucura (to become joyful), while an early 19th-century book published in Vienna assumed its name has been derived from "Bukovie", a beech forest.[14]
The official city name in full is "The Municipality of Bucharest" (Romanian: Municipiul București).
A native or resident of Bucharest is called a "Bucharester" (Romanian: bucureștean).

Transylvania boasts in various extremely beautiful landscapes. Its mountaintops are crowned by castle ruins, in its steep creeks rivers are twisting. In the giant wooden lands caves can be found, while among the alpine snow-capped mountains tarns are awaiting the tourists. Unique sights are the Békás Canyon and the Killer's Lake, which guards the petrified pinewoods. The warm springs feed such spa-resorts as Tusnádfürdő or Szováta. The medieval towns surrounded by towers and walls tell us tales of the past. National costumes, carved Székely-gates and the works of the Korond potters represent the ancient art of the folks living here. A legend or a story belongs to almost every city, every castle, no matter if it is the tall Déva castle, Hunyadvár or Brán, the Castle of Count Dracula.

Take a tour of Town of Sibiu in Sibiu, Romania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Sibiu, situated in the heart of Romania, is a large city with a historic foundation.
It is divided into two main sections: the older Lower Town and the Upper Town. The old town dates back to the twelfth century and still has buildings from that time.
Sibiu was once a fortified city and some of its walls and towers still stand.
The Upper Town is newer and features the Grand Square, named for obvious reasons.
The city has a great collection of museums and medieval buildings, and is quite beautiful.

Our month long trek across Romania was unforgettable. Starting in Bucharest we visited Brasov, Sibiu, Cluj-Napoca, and Timisoara. The history, both recent and far reaching are the stuff of legends! From the city of Bucharest, to Saxon villages and cities of Transylvania, Romania should be on your radar now, if it wasn't already!
