An overview of Winchester leverguns of the 19th Century. We've already posted a more indepth video on each of these rifles, or will in the near future. Thanks to Guns & Leather and Tennessee Gun Country, as well as Taylor's & Company, who helped us fill in the missing pieces in this line-up of beautiful historical rifles:

There were some other prototypes that never made it to commercial production and such, but these were the "Elite Eight" that saw extensive use in the 19th Century and on into the 20th Century.
Heck, many of us STILL use them in the 21st Century! :-)
Hopefully, I didn't step on my tongue too many times; this attempt to cover the basics on a lot of armament involved a lot of yakking. It was a one-take (first-take), unedited video, except for John's usual great slow motion "eye candy" at the end.
This array of beauty and the opportunity to fondle / shoot all of them is just another reason why I still claim to be about the luckiest man on the planet! Life is good! Hope you enjoy the video.

Guns that Shaped Our History - Winchester Rifle Documentary
Winchester rifle is a comprehensive term describing a series of lever-action repeating rifles manufactured by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. Evolved from the 1860 Henry rifle, Winchester rifles were among the earliest repeaters. The Model 1873 was particularly successful, being colloquially known as "The Gun that Won the West".
Most popular of all was the Model 1894, a new design by John Browning widely adopted as a hunting rifle that saw production of over 6 million units before its domestic discontinuation 112 years later in 2006. It went back into production by Miroku Corp. in 2010.

I am finally the proud owner of a Winchester Model 94, pre-64 vintage. The caliber is the "All American" caliber of .30-30. It's good to have a .30-30 back in the stable; now I can sleep better. :-)

Showing, discussing, & shooting the iconic Winchester Model 92. If you like leverguns, it doesn't get much better than this one. Plus, this is the one you see in most Western movies, especially the older Westerns.
By the way, in the video I mention that the Model 92 was manufactured right up to "WW I," when I meant to say WWII. Duh! Good thing you don't expert me to be too smart.
And yes, the rear sight is reversed, and I forgot to mention it in the video. I have since learned, too, that this was fairly common back in the day in order for the rifle to fit better and extract more easily from a scabbard while on horseback. There might be other reasons, as well. I do notice the rifle is handier to pick up and grasp right there at the balance point with no sight in the way.

Winchester (archaically known as Winton and Wintonceastre) is a historic cathedral city and former capital city of England. It is the county town of Hampshire, in South East England. The city lies at the heart of the wider City of Winchester, a local government district, and is located at the western end of the South Downs, along the course of the River Itchen. An overview of Winchester leverguns of the 19th Century. We've already posted a more indepth video on each of these rifles, or will in the near future. Thanks to Guns & Leather and Tennessee Gun Country, as well as Taylor's & Company, who helped us fill in the missing pieces in this line-up of beautiful historical rifles: http://www.gunsandleather.com/ http://www.tnguncountry.com/ http://www.taylorsfirearms.com/ There were some other prototypes that never made it to commercial production and such, but these were the "Elite Eight" that saw extensive use in the 19th Century and on into the 20th Century. I am finally the proud owner of a Winchester Model 94, pre-64 vintage. The caliber is the "All American" caliber of .30-30. It's good to have a .30-30 back in the stable; now I can sleep better. :-) -
Model 92 Winchester
Showing, discussing, & shooting the iconic Winchester Model 92. If you like leverguns, it doesn't get much better than this one. Plus, this is the one you see in most Western movies, especially the older Westerns. By the way, in the video I mention that the Model 92 was manufactured right up to "WW I," when I meant to say WWII. Duh! Good thing you don't expert me to be too smart. And yes, the rear sight is reversed, and I forgot to mention it in the video. I have since learned, too, that this was fairly common back in the day in order for the rifle to fit better and extract more easily from a scabbard while on horseback. There might be other reasons, as well. I do notice the rifle is handier to pick up and grasp right there at the balance point with no sight in the way. -

It was designed by John Browning, but was not the first pump action designed and sold. That credit goes to Christopher Spencer, who put the first pump action on the market in 1882. By the way, in the video I mention that the Model 92 was manufactured right up to "WW I," when I meant to say WWII. Duh! Good thing you don't expert me to be too smart.
And yes, the rear sight is reversed, and I forgot to mention it in the video. I have since learned, too, that this was fairly common back in the day in order for the rifle to fit better and extract more easily from a scabbard while on horseback. There might be other reasons, as well. I do notice the rifle is handier to pick up and grasp right there at the balance point with no sight in the way.

MSRP on this new 1873 is $1299.99 US, as of the date of this review, which is not inexpensive, but it is also priced right in there with the better Italian rifles, such as the Cimarron. Winchester has, over the past few years, sold other Miroku-produced leverguns, and they have all been very well-made rifles. This new 1873 is no exception, and it is good to see the Winchester brand upon the "Gun That Won The West".

The Winchester 1897 was the gun that really set the standard for the now-ubiquitous pump action shotgun. It was designed by John Browning, but was not the first pump action designed and sold. That credit goes to Christopher Spencer, who put the first pump action on the market in 1882. His patent on the concept (in conjunction with co-designer Sylvester Roper) forced competitors to develop workarounds (like the sliding trigger and grip of the Burgess pump shotgun) until 1893, when Winchester released Browning's design.
