Bristol (i/ˈbrɪstəl/) is a city, unitary authority and county in South West England with an estimated population of 442,500 in 2015. It is England's sixth and the United Kingdom's eighth most populous city, and the most populous city in Southern England after London. People from Bristol are known as Bristolians. The city borders the counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire, with the historic cities of Bath and Gloucester to the south-east and north-east, respectively.
Iron Age hill forts and Roman villas were built near the confluence of the Rivers Frome and Avon, and around the beginning of the 11th century the settlement was known as Brycgstow (Old English "the place at the bridge"). Bristol received a royal charter in 1155 and was in Gloucestershire until 1373, when it became a county. From the 13th to the 18th century, Bristol was among the top three English cities after London (with York and Norwich) in tax receipts. Bristol was eclipsed by the rapid rise of Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham during the Industrial Revolution.
Great Britain, also known as Britain i/ˈbrɪ.tən/, is an island in the North Atlantic off the north-west coast of continental Europe. With an area of 209,331 km2 (80,823 sq mi), it is the largest island in Europe and the ninth-largest in the world. In 2011 the island had a population of about 61 million people, making it the third-most populous island in the world, after Java in Indonesia and Honshu in Japan. It accounts for the majority of the British Isles archipelago, along with over 1,000 smaller surrounding islands, including the island of Ireland to its west.
The island is part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, constituting most of its territory: most of England, Scotland, and Wales are on the island, with their respective capital cities, London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. Politically, the term Great Britain usually extends to include surrounding islands that form part of England, Scotland, and Wales.
A single Kingdom of Great Britain resulted from the Union of Scotland and England (which already comprised the present-day countries of England and Wales) in 1707. More than a hundred years before, in 1603, King James VI, King of Scots, had inherited the throne of England, but it was not until 1707 that the Parliaments of the two countries agreed to form a unified state. Subsequently, in 1801, Great Britain united with the neighbouring Kingdom of Ireland, forming the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The state was renamed the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" after five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the United Kingdom in 1922.
Vice Squad are an English punk band formed in 1978 in Bristol. The band was formed from two other local punk bands, The Contingent and TV Brakes. The songwriter and vocalist Beki Bondage (born Rebecca Louise Bond) was a founding member of the band. Although there was a period of time when the band had a different vocalist she reformed thee band in 2014. She is often cited as being the first punk pin-up featured on the front cover of a number of influential music tabloids such as Melody Maker, NME and Smash Hits.
Vice Squad was formed in 1978 with an initial line-up of Beki Bondage (vocals), Dave Bateman (guitar), Mark Hambly (bass guitar) and Shane Baldwin (drums), and played its first gig at Bristol University's Anson Rooms on 12 April 1979. Bateman and Baldwin had previously been members of the TV Brakes. The first release by TV Brakes was the track "Nothing", which was included on the 1979 compilation Avon Calling. Members of the band were involved in setting up the Riot City label with Simon Edwards, the label becoming one of the major punk labels of the era. Vice Squad took some time to make further impact, only playing six gigs in 1980. Its first single, "Last Rockers" in 1981, was well-received, selling over 20,000 copies and spending almost forty weeks in the UK Indie Chart, reaching number 7. The follow-up, "Resurrection", reached number 4, and the band undertook a tour supporting UK Subs. The singles received airplay and support from BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel, and the band went on to record two sessions for his show, in 1981 and 1982.
The West of England is a loose and locationally unspecific term sometimes given to the area surrounding the city and county of Bristol, England, and also sometimes applied more widely and in other parts of South West England.
The term is increasingly used by organisations such as the West of England Partnership, Connexions West of England, and the West of England Sport Trust, as a synonym for the former Avon area, which existed as a local government unit between 1974 and 1996. Some aspects of transport planning and policy are coordinated using the TravelPlus (or Travel +) logo.
According to the West of England Partnership website,
Specifically, the term is also used by the University of the West of England, the Royal West of England Academy, and by voluntary groups and clubs such as the West of England Bridge Club, all of which are based in or near Bristol.
The term "West of England" is also often used more widely to include the counties of Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire; sometimes extending to Devon and Dorset. These counties also form part of the South West of England, a region which additionally includes Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, which are in fact the most westerly parts of England.
SS Great Britain is a museum ship and former passenger steamship, which was advanced for her time. She was the longest passenger ship in the world from 1845 to 1854. She was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel for the Great Western Steamship Company's transatlantic service between Bristol and New York. While other ships had been built of iron or equipped with a screw propeller, Great Britain was the first to combine these features in a large ocean-going ship. She was the first iron steamer to cross the Atlantic, which she did in 1845, in the time of 14 days.
The ship is 322 ft (98 m) in length and has a 3,400-ton displacement. She was powered by two inclined 2 cylinder engines of the direct-acting type, with twin 88 in (220 cm) bore, 6-foot (1.8 m) stroke cylinders. She was also provided with secondary sail power. The four decks provided accommodation for a crew of 120, plus 360 passengers who were provided with cabins and dining and promenade saloons.
When launched in 1843, Great Britain was by far the largest vessel afloat. However, her protracted construction and high cost had left her owners in a difficult financial position, and they were forced out of business in 1846 having spent all their funds re-floating the ship after she was run aground at Dundrum Bay after a navigational error. In 1852 she was sold for salvage and repaired. Great Britain carried thousands of immigrants to Australia from 1852 until converted to sail in 1881. Three years later, she was retired to the Falkland Islands where she was used as a warehouse, quarantine ship and coal hulk until scuttled in 1937.

When walking around Bristol it’s impossible not to find a cutting-edge piece of graffiti or urban art. Art is widespread in Bristol, which is home to more than 200 artists. The most famous one it’s obviously Banksy, who was born and grew up here, before reaching world fame. But don’t come from here only for the remaining Banksy murals which are now like historical landmarks, alongside the cathedral and other Bristol monuments. Having led the way with popular sub-cultures for the last 30 years, Bristol has a history for graffiti and street art that is unlike anywhere else in the UK. The Upfest is probably the most important street art festival in the word. Street art, a multicultural background and a vibrant nightlife scene, will allow Bristol to attract young talents, artists and creative ...

VICE SQUAD the movie 17 last rockers Back in the dim and distant 1980s, when yours truly did his humble best on drums, Beki tackled the vocals with aplomb, Dave did some quite remarkable, and often unintended things with his guitar, and Mark characteristically shored things up in an unassuming, but always reliable, manner on bass, there weren't really too many cameras on hand to capture the Vice Squad live experience. Given some of our dodgy performances, that could be counted as a blessing, but now, when asked to put together the first Vice Squad film, it's proved a little frustrating for us. I know for a fact that we were filmed in Europe, America and Canada, but despite our best efforts, none of that material seems to be forthcoming. Shawn Stern of Youth Brigade/Better Youth Orga...
The organisers of this event would like to apologise for the poor quality of this audio, where you will hear our kids voices in the background. They were well behaved considering their ages. This is a new experience for all of us, and accept it was our mistake to keep the video camera close to the kids. We hope you will be able to listen with the level of kindness our Gnanaloka Thero is spreading around the world, and focus on the Deshana and not let the background voice disrupt your listening. Bristol, the largest city in South West England, is one of the most interesting cities in the UK. This city has an eclectic combination of architectural styles and is one of the most culturally vibrant towns in England. By locals Bristol is called Brizzle or Bristle. A good place to start exploring the city is the Castle Park with the ruins of St Peter’s Church and the ruins of Bristol Castle. This used to be a network of busy streets and shops until it was bombed during the second world war. In the Old Town there are plenty of interesting buildings from most of the architectural periods of the UK. In this neighborhood there also is the Queen Square, a garden with the Statue of William III. A short walk from there is the St Mary Radcliffe Church. Which has been a place of Christian w...

Hello Everybody, this weekend we had a great trip to Bristol! It is a beautiful city with awesome places! Also many activities and programs all the time. Last year we went to a Muppet weekend and visit some art galleries as well. We have created a quick mood video so you can get a great feel and get some inspiration. In the heart of the city there is a park with a great view, it is worth climbing up! The bridge is breathtaking and for the food and club lovers this city is heaven. You hardly need any money to get a drink or two ;-) It is very easy to get there from London and it takes only 1 hour 40 minutes. I had an amazing host, my lovely friend Emily :-) You can also check out all the Banksy paintings, they organize tours as well. We hope you like it! Love An, The Get Inspired London ...
