Kim Jong-il (Korean pronunciation: [ɡ̊imd͜zɔŋil]; 16 February 1941/1942 – 17 December 2011) was the Supreme Leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), commonly referred to as North Korea, from 1994 to 2011. By the early 1980s Kim had become the heir apparent for the leadership of the country and assumed important posts in the party and army organs. He succeeded his father and founder of the DPRK, Kim Il-sung, following the elder Kim's death in 1994. Kim Jong-il was the General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK), Chairman of the National Defence Commission (NDC) of North Korea, and the Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army (KPA), the fourth-largest standing army in the world. Kim's leadership is thought to have been even more dictatorial than his father's.
During Kim's regime the country suffered from famine, partially due to economic mismanagement, and had a poor human rights record. Kim involved his country in state terrorism and strengthened the role of the military by his Songun, or "military-first", politics. Kim's rule also saw tentative economic reforms, including the opening of the Kaesong Industrial Park in 2003.
In April 2009, North Korea's constitution was amended to officially refer to him (and his later successors) as the "Supreme Leader of the DPRK".[3] The most common colloquial title given to him during his reign was "The Dear Leader" (친애하는 지도자) to distinguish him from his father Kim Il-sung, "The Great Leader". Following Kim's failure to appear at important public events in 2008, foreign observers assumed that Kim had either fallen seriously ill or died. North Korea is stepping up its campaign to show leader Kim Jong-il healthy, after suffering an alleged stroke in August. Pictures of the leader inspecting two military units were released today.
Analysts say that despite being in one of the world's most closed countries, many North Koreans have likely heard reports from outside media of Kim Jong-ils ailing health.
The North's propaganda machine responded by saying he is active and in control of the communist state.
North Korea's state-run television station says Kim inspected two army facilities, but didnt say when he made the visits.
Kim appears to have lost little weight and has a full head of hair, even though some intelligence sources say he may have had brain surgery.
Over the weekend, the North released photographs showing Kim watching a soccer match. Last month it said he was out in public twice, once to see another soccer match and to inspect a unit of female soldiers.
But some of the undated photographs released by the North raise more questions about his health.
Experts in the South say the pictures released in October of his visit to the women's soldiers were taken several months ago, well before his suspected illness.
Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso says intelligence sources indicate Kim may still be in hospital but is still in control of the state.

Although I did not plan on making a video to commemorate the recent passing of Christopher Hitchens, I felt compelled to address an issue I had been thinking about for quite some time when I learned Kim Jong-il died just two days later. There is a tendency for Christians and other monotheists to lump all atheists together in one group, when there are big differences between atheists like Christopher Hitchens and Kim Jong-il. Indeed, I find the term "atheist" to be non-informative, non-descriptive, and in a major source of confusion for many people. Therefore, I have been considering whether atheists should change their tune and label themselves according to what they are rather than what they are not.
I originally wanted this to be a quick video, ending with a little montage of Kim Jong-il to the song "I'm so Ronery" from the Team America soundtrack. However, I tried uploading the video two times and I kept getting copyright violations. Therefore, I had to find an alternative version of the song, not from the movie -- thanks a lot YouTube! :( Anyway, every time I went to re-edit the video I kept adding a little more to the end until it eventually became 15 minutes long, LOL. I don't have time to produce a lot of videos, so when I do I might as well make them count.
In this video I also mention that I recently had a debate about slavery's depiction in the Bible, and over the past few weeks I've been getting a lot of private messages about people having theological debates with Christians. I think my anti-apologetics would be a great place to start developing hard-hitting questions of your own -- to really challenge theists in a debate. World media are becoming louder in the 2000s in praising him as the most prominent leader.
The Intellectual Research Group put his name on the top of the list of 10 famous persons in the present-day world.
"Al Ahram" and "Al Akhbar", Egyptian newspapers, listed him as "Man of the Year, 2006."

Anyone sharing the name of Kim Jong-un was urged to change it in a directive sent out by the North Korean regime almost four years ago, a report said. An internal state document obtained by South Korea's KBS TV station contained an "administrative order" from then-leader Kim Jong-il for all party, army and police officials to ensure the directive was carried out. The order was issued in January 2011, shortly after Kim Jong-un had been effectively anointed as the successor of his father, who died in December of that year. "All party organs and public security authorities should make a list of residents named Kim Jong-un and train them to voluntarily change their names," said the document, extracts of which were aired by KBS. The directive appeared to maintain an ongoing tradition by the reclusive state's Kim dynasty. The process involved revising names on official documents, including social security cards and school diplomas. Officials were also directed to reject birth certificates for any newborns named Kim Jong-un.

When Kim Jong-il, former leader of North Korea, is mentioned in North Korean media and publications, he is not simply addressed by name. At least one special title is used, and his name is emphasised by a special bold font, for example: "The great leader Comrade Kim Jong-il provides on-the-spot guidance to the Ragwon Machine Complex." Alternatively, a larger than normal font may be used. The titles themselves were developed by the Central Committee of the Workers' Party. The same applies to Kim Jong-il's father, Kim Il-sung, who ruled North Korea from 1948 to 1994. Scholars have collected the following list of Kim Jong-il’s titles.

North Korea is stepping up its campaign to show leader Kim Jong-il healthy, after suffering an alleged stroke in August. Pictures of the leader inspecting two military units were released today. Analysts say that despite being in one of the world's most closed countries, many North Koreans have likely heard reports from outside media of Kim Jong-ils ailing health. The North's propaganda machine responded by saying he is active and in control of the communist state. North Korea's state-run television station says Kim inspected two army facilities, but didnt say when he made the visits. Kim appears to have lost little weight and has a full head of hair, even though some intelligence sources say he may have had brain surgery. Over the weekend, the North released photographs showing Kim watching a soccer match. Last month it said he was out in public twice, once to see another soccer match and to inspect a unit of female soldiers. But some of the undated photographs released by the North raise more questions about his health. Experts in the South say the pictures released in October of his visit to the women's soldiers were taken several months ago, well before his suspected illness. Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso says intelligence sources indicate Kim may still be in hospital but is still in control of the state. -

Although I did not plan on making a video to commemorate the recent passing of Christopher Hitchens, I felt compelled to address an issue I had been thinking about for quite some time when I learned Kim Jong-il died just two days later. There is a tendency for Christians and other monotheists to lump all atheists together in one group, when there are big differences between atheists like Christopher Hitchens and Kim Jong-il. Indeed, I find the term "atheist" to be non-informative, non-descriptive, and in a major source of confusion for many people. Therefore, I have been considering whether atheists should change their tune and label themselves according to what they are rather than what they are not. I originally wanted this to be a quick video, ending with a little montage of Kim Jong-il to the song "I'm so Ronery" from the Team America soundtrack. However, I tried uploading the video two times and I kept getting copyright violations. Therefore, I had to find an alternative version of the song, not from the movie -- thanks a lot YouTube! :( Anyway, every time I went to re-edit the video I kept adding a little more to the end until it eventually became 15 minutes long, LOL. I don't have time to produce a lot of videos, so when I do I might as well make them count. In this video I also mention that I recently had a debate about slavery's depiction in the Bible, and over the past few weeks I've been getting a lot of private messages about people having theological debates with Christians. I think my anti-apologetics would be a great place to start developing hard-hitting questions of your own -- to really challenge theists in a debate. An internal state document obtained by South Korea's KBS TV station contained an "administrative order" from then-leader Kim Jong-il for all party, army and police officials to ensure the directive was carried out. The order was issued in January 2011, shortly after Kim Jong-un had been effectively anointed as the successor of his father, who died in December of that year. "All party organs and public security authorities should make a list of residents named Kim Jong-un and train them to voluntarily change their names," said the document, extracts of which were aired by KBS. The directive appeared to maintain an ongoing tradition by the reclusive state's Kim dynasty. The process involved revising names on official documents, including social security cards and school diplomas. Officials were also directed to reject birth certificates for any newborns named Kim Jong-un. North Korea is stepping up its campaign to show leader Kim Jong-il healthy, after suffering an alleged stroke in August. Pictures of the leader inspecting two military units were released today. In its history, the Islamic Republic has had two Supreme Leaders: Ruhollah Khomeini, who held the position from 1979 until his death in 1989, and Sayyed Ali Khamenei, who has held the position since Khomeini's death.

The North's propaganda machine responded by saying he is active and in control of the communist state.
North Korea's state-run television station says Kim inspected two army facilities, but didnt say when he made the visits.
Kim appears to have lost little weight and has a full head of hair, even though some intelligence sources say he may have had brain surgery.
Over the weekend, the North released photographs showing Kim watching a soccer match. Last month it said he was out in public twice, once to see another soccer match and to inspect a unit of female soldiers.
But some of the undated photographs released by the North raise more questions about his health.
Experts in the South say the pictures released in October of his visit to the women's soldiers were taken several months ago, well before his suspected illness.

Although I did not plan on making a video to commemorate the recent passing of Christopher Hitchens, I felt compelled to address an issue I had been thinking about for quite some time when I learned Kim Jong-il died just two days later. There is a tendency for Christians and other monotheists to lump all atheists together in one group, when there are big differences between atheists like Christopher Hitchens and Kim Jong-il. Indeed, I find the term "atheist" to be non-informative, non-descriptive, and in a major source of confusion for many people. Therefore, I have been considering whether atheists should change their tune and label themselves according to what they are rather than what they are not.
I originally wanted this to be a quick video, ending with a little montage of Kim Jong-il to the song "I'm so Ronery" from the Team America soundtrack. However, I tried uploading the video two times and I kept getting copyright violations. Therefore, I had to find an alternative version of the song, not from the movie -- thanks a lot YouTube! :( Anyway, every time I went to re-edit the video I kept adding a little more to the end until it eventually became 15 minutes long, LOL. I don't have time to produce a lot of videos, so when I do I might as well make them count.
In this video I also mention that I recently had a debate about slavery's depiction in the Bible, and over the past few weeks I've been getting a lot of private messages about people having theological debates with Christians. I think my anti-apologetics would be a great place to start developing hard-hitting questions of your own -- to really challenge theists in a debate. I hope to someday adapt the debate into a video of its own, but if you are interested in reading a comprehensive rebuttal to the apologetics of Biblical slavery, please check out my website.

Kim was made chairman of the State Affairs Commission, a new body established under a revised constitution adopted by the parliament and which replaces the powerful National Defence Commission, state media reported on Thursday. Kim was made chairman of the State Affairs Commission, a new body established under a revised constitution adopted by the parliament and which replaces the powerful National Defence Commission, state media reported on Thursday.
His full title is now the Dear Respected Comrade Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army.
Kim, believed to be in his early 30s, attended the assembly meeting on Wednesday. He also holds the rank of marshal in the North Korean military, and is more usually referred to as "our marshal" in propaganda and common parlance.
The parliament meets once or twice a year to formally approve budgets or policies set out by the ruling Workers' Party, which has increased in prominence under Kim.
The assembly also has the authority to grant Kim new titles or positions within North Korea's opaque leadership structure.
Kim's father, Kim Jong Il, used the National Defence Commission to project authority under his rule, which was marked by famine and a "military-first" policy of priority spending on North Korean military development.
The new State Affairs Commission appears to be made up of cadres with civilian positions, according to a list of new appointments released by state media.
Wednesday's meeting was called to implement policy aims stated in a rare Workers' Party congress in May, during which Kim Jong Un announced a five-year economic plan.
On June 22, North Korea launched two Musudan intermediate-range missiles, drawing strong condemnation from South Korea, Japan and the United States for infringing UN sanctions designed to stop Pyongyang's nuclear and missile development programmes.
North Korea referred to the missiles as a "Hwasong-10" and said the tests did not put the security of neighbouring countries at risk.

Although the DPRK officially describes itself as a Juche Korean-style socialist republic and elections are held, it is widely considered a dictatorship that has been described as totalitarian and Stalinistwith an elaborate cult of personality around the Kim family. The Workers' Party of Korea, led by a member of the ruling family, holds de facto power in the state and leads the Democratic Front for the Reunification of the Fatherland of which all political officers are required to be a member. Juche, an ideology of self-reliance initiated by the country's first President, Kim Il-sung, became the official state ideology, replacing Marxism--Leninism, when the country adopted a new constitution in 1972.In 2009, references to Communism were removed from the country's constitution.
The means of production are owned by the state through state-run enterprises and collectivized farms, and most services such as healthcare, education, housing and food production are state funded or subsidized. In the 1990s North Korea suffered from a famine and continues to struggle with food production. In 2013, the UN identified North Korean government policies as the primary cause of the shortages and estimated that 16 million people required food aid. North Korea's health care system has been a subject of controversy: the World Health Organization described it as "the envy of the developing world" while Amnesty International claims that it suffers from barely functioning hospitals, poor hygiene and epidemics.
The main feature of this secretive nation is manifested in the statues, sculptures, and iconic paintings of North Korea's Communist dictator Kim Jong II, who has gone to great and ruthless lengths to convince his subjects he has godlike powers which have been inherited from his equally "divine" father, the late Kim II Sung.

This was the first year I had known about Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight. It's a pretty cool process where the members of the Double Fine team can pitch their own ideas and put together a prototype within 2 weeks. Dear Leader is just one of three final projects from the team, with one extra prototype from Pendleton Ward, the creator of Adventure Time.
After this one, there are the two other prototypes of which I'll make videos. Steed, and Mnemonic. I have already played Steed all the way to where the prototype ends, and I am trying to figure out how to boot Mnemonic. They'll be on the way soon! Unfortunately, I didn't have enough money to afford Little Pink Best Buds, it does look really fun though. Sigh...

He was a cadre in Section 5 (Literature), Division 19 (Poetry) of Office 101 and was personally endorsed by Kim Jong-il for a triumphalist poem he'd penned glorifying the Kim dynasty and the state.
It was only following a visit to his home town, where he witnessed suffering, starvation and unimaginable poverty, that he began to question the system in which he lived. What followed is an extraordinary story of awakening, terror and escape.
Jang Jin-sung will be joining us to share his story and give us an insight in to the circles of power and privilege in North Korea. We will also be joined by experts to reflect on Jang Jin-sung's story and explore what it reveals about the inner workings of North Korea's elite.
Chaired by John Everard, a retired British diplomat who served as British Ambassador to North Korea. He is author of Only Beautiful, Please: A British Diplomat in North Korea.
