Discover why Athens was the preeminent city during the Golden Age of Greece on this look at of the cradle of Western civilization. Ancient Greece was a Greek civilization belonging to a period of Greek history that lasted from the Archaic period of the 8th to 6th centuries BC to the end of antiquity (ca. 600 AD). Immediately following this period was the beginning of the Early Middle Ages and the Byzantine era. Included in ancient Greece is the period of Classical Greece, which flourished during the 5th to 4th centuries BC. Classical Greece began with the repelling of a Persian invasion by Athenian leadership. Because of conquests by Alexander the Great, Hellenistic civilization flourished from Central Asia to the western end of the Mediterranean Sea.
Classical Greek culture, especially philosophy, had a powerful influence on the Roman Empire, which carried a version of it to many parts of the Mediterranean Basin and Europe, for which reason Classical Greece is generally considered to be the seminal culture which provided the foundation of modern Western culture.

Edith Hall (born 1959) is a British scholar of classics and cultural history and professor of Classics at King's College London. From 2006 until 2011 she held a Research Chair at Royal Holloway, University of London, where she directed the Centre for the Reception of Greece and Rome until November 2011, when she resigned over dispute regarding funding for classics. She also co-founded and is Consultant Director of the Archive of Performances of Greek and Roman Drama at Oxford University, Chairman of the Gilbert Murray Trust, and Judge on the Times Stephen Spender Prize for poetry translation. Her prizewinning doctoral thesis was awarded at Oxford.
Edith Hall studied for a BA degree in Classics & Modern Languages at Wadham College, Oxford (awarded in 1982) and a DPhil degree at St Hugh's College, Oxford (awarded in 1988). She held posts at the universities of Cambridge, Reading, Oxford and Durham, and visiting chairs at several North American institutions, before taking up her post at Royal Holloway.

The ancient Athenian legal system is both excitingly familiar and disturbingly alien to the modern reader. It functions within a democracy which shares many of our core values but operates in a disconcertingly different way. Trials from Classical Athens assembles a number of surviving speeches written for trials in Athenian courts, dealing with themes which range from murder and assault, through slander and sexual misconduct to property and trade disputes and minor actions for damage. The texts illuminate key aspects both of Athenian social and political life and the functioning of the Athenian legal system. This new and revised volume adds to the existing selection of key forensic speeches with three new translations accompanied by lucid explanatory notes. The introduction is augmented with a section on Athenian democracy to make the book more accessible to those unfamiliar with the Athenian political system. To aid accessibility further a new glossary is included as well as illustrations for the first time. Josiah Ober is Constantine Mitsotakis Professor of Political Science and Classics at Stanford University, and this year Leventis Visiting Professor of Greek Studies at Edinburgh University, He works on historical institutionalism and political theory, focusing on the political thought and practice of the ancient Greek world. In addition to The Rise and Fall of Classical Greece (2015), he is the author of a number of books published by Princeton University Press, including Mass and Elite in Democratic Athens (1989), The Athenian Revolution (1996), Political Dissent in Democratic Athens (2008), and Democracy and Knowledge (2008).

Abstract: The question of what enables the emergence of democracy is related to a second question that is very much in the forefront of current policy discussions: What sustains democracy through periods of crisis in the face of exogenous shock? Ancient Athens provides a case study of an early democracy that performed exceptionally well within a highly competitive ecology of states, and survived severe shocks with severe demographic impacts, including plague and military defeat. Athens’ democratic institutions promoted robustness for the regime not only by giving citizens the right incentives, but also by encouraging the elaboration of social networks and promoting a political culture in which prosocial behavior was rewarded and praised while defection was blamed and punished. The close relationship between institutions, networks, and culture suggests a hypothesis for why some democracies have proved to be highly robust to crisis, and also why “thin” democracies, which fail to build networks or political culture, are prone to collapse.
Jorg Huber and I invited Josh to come to the University of Sussex so we could consider principles by which the management of a University cold be structured more democratically than has happened over the last 10 years. My view is the pure top down control we now have at UK Universities is damaging to science and scholarship more generally because it fails to implement the principles of an open society most effectively. The separate management class we now have are not incentivized to make contextually sensitive decisions that promote quality research and teaching. For example, one conjecture is that the current "credibility crisis" in parts of science are a result of currently typical management practices. I think a radical experiment in Athenian democracy for a University (i.e. using those principles that are transferable to the modern environment that explained why Athenian democracy worked) is worth trying - I would dearly love the experiment to happen at Sussex, but most of all I would love any University to try it, find out how to make it work, and become an intellectual beacon for others!

Well, good afternoon from sunny Athens. We are currently exploring the Greek capital. We recently actually spent a few days traveling around Meteora and now we're finishing up our trip here in Athens. We've got two full days to explore the city which isn't a lot of time but we're going to try to do our best. So let's get ready and start exploring.
Our first stop was one of the most recognized sights in Athens - the Parthenon, which was dedicated to the goddess Athena who was seen as the patron of Athens.
After sunset we lingered atop Mount Lycabettus for some night views of the city before taking the funicular down to the bottom. Seeing the Acropolis all lit up at night was a pretty cool sight!
Next up we visited the Temple of Zeus which once housed the statue of Zeus, and was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.
When it comes to shopping, there are a few different options. We made our way to Monastiraki, which is one of the principal shopping districts in Athens. Here we visited both the Flea Market and the antique shops in the area.
The Agora was the central spot in ancient Greek city-states, and it is where people gathered.
So we are wrapping up our time here in Athens. Any surprises or final thoughts to share? Yeah, something that really surprised me were just the amount of stray animals that I saw on the streets. Lots of cats and dogs.
I also thought there was really good dining options as well. We had a number of really good Greek meals and also some really good International food too.
Final thoughts, I think this is a really underrated capital in Europe. A lot like Warsaw in Poland so if you have an opportunity to visit Athens in Greece definitely do so.
So what did you think of Athens? Well, I thought it was a really cool city and I actually had a great time here. It kind of reminded me a little bit of Tel Aviv with the Mediterranean feel but also Berlin because it is very artsy and gritty. So it's a really cool place to check out. Great food, lots of attractions. You have a mix of antiquity with urban. So it's really fun and it is unlike any place I've been before, so I would highly recommend it.

With its striking majestic appearance and timeless elegance it was more magnificent than any other building in Greece. Six female figures, the Karyatides, support the southern hall of the Ionic Temple of Erechtheion that stands on sacred ground close to the main temple. Since the beginning of the 4th century the mythical kings Kekrops and Erechtheu were worshiped here until the city’s subsequent decline. Legend has it that during a contest between the gods Poseidon left the imprint of his trident on a rock upon which Athene created an olive tree. Throughout its history the temple served many purposes and the Turks, somewhat disrespectfully, transformed the Erechtheion into a harem. For centuries this picturesque former pirate village in the middle of Cyclades group of islands has been the meeting place for artists, V.I.P.’s and the international glitterati. The Cyclades are also known as The Pearls Of Greece and it seems as though the gods have scattered a handful of beautiful pearls into the deep blue Aegean Sea. In ancient times they were also known as The Islands Of Light because Apollo, the God of Light and Learning, was born here and also worshipped on the islands. Santorini is the most southerly of the Cyclades Islands and the legendary location of the mythical lost island of Atlantis and also a breathtaking island paradise of rock, lava, sea and light.Crete is the ‘Island Of Light’ and the birthplace of Zeus. Heraklion is the capital of the largest and most southerly of the Greek islands on which a highly developed culture has existed for four thousand years. through the Greek capital, which lies in the southern part of the country, where the Peloponnesus meets Attica, will expose its visitors to world famous attractions such as the Acropolis, the theater of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herod Atticus.
The Greek capital lies in the southern part of the country where the Peloponnesus meets Attica. Visiting the sundrenched landscapes of Hellas is in fact a pilgrimage to the beginnings of European culture. The ruins of Athens, ancient temples, palaces and forts are more than just crumbling heaps of stones. They are tangible reminders of Greek cultural heritage not only in sculpture and architecture but in linguistics, science, politics and sports. The world as we know it has a thousand links to ancient Greece. This is the birthplace of democracy, the first of the big games and of hundreds of concepts and words that all European languages use to this very day. The ancient ideal of beauty and perfect sense of proportion still leave us spellbound as we gaze upon their often fragmented sculptures.
Philosophy, literature, theater and the science of history all have their roots in ancient Athens. The best known feature of the city is the Acropolis crowned by the gleaming pillars of the Parthenon. This majestic complex of buildings was built on a hilltop 165m high. On its southern slope, we find the remains of two ancient theaters, the theater of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herod Atticus. The Beule Gate leading to the Propylaeum was named after the archeologist Earnest Beule who discovered the gate beneath Turkish bastion. The two rocky towers were originally erected in Roman times and expanded later by the Turks.
A line of stairs is divided by a terrace. The marble covering of the stairs has now been reconstructed. Earlier tourists suffered 60 to 70 accidents a year climbing the stairs. The Odeon was built by a wealthy and famous patron of Athens in memory of his deceased young wife following the standards of Roman theatre design. This theater, once very ornate and covered in marble could accommodate 6000 spectators. Its remains have been painstakingly restored and the Odeon now hosts the Athens festival every September. Left of the terrace stands a huge column. The marble memorial was erected in the second century BC to honor Iptheus Agrippa, son in law of Emperor Augustus. The almost 9m high base once supported a four horse war chariot in bronze but that has been lost.
The Propylaeum is the entrance to the Acropolis, an ornate gateway, a fitting overture to the fantastic sight that awaits us. It was commissioned by Pericles and designed by Phidias but construction started under the direction of Manacles after Pericles left Athens. The 18m wide and 24m long propylaeum is divided at the three halls by ionic columns. It originally had a coffered ceiling which was destroyed by an explosion in Turkish times.

The Greek capital lies in the southern part of the country where the Peloponnesus meets Attica. Visiting the sundrenched landscapes of Hellas is in fact a pilgrimage to the beginnings of European culture. The ruins of Athens, ancient temples, palaces and forts are more than just crumbling heaps of stones. They are tangible reminders of Greek cultural heritage not only in sculpture and architecture but in linguistics, science, politics and sports. The world as we know it has a thousand links to ancient Greece. This is the birthplace of democracy, the first of the big games and of hundreds of concepts and words that all European languages use to this very day. The ancient ideal of beauty and perfect sense of proportion still leave us spellbound as we gaze upon their often fragmented sculptures.
Philosophy, literature, theater and the science of history all have their roots in ancient Athens. The best known feature of the city is the Acropolis crowned by the gleaming pillars of the Parthenon. This majestic complex of buildings was built on a hilltop 165m high. On its southern slope, we find the remains of two ancient theaters, the theater of Dionysus and the Odeon of Herod Atticus. The Beule Gate leading to the Propylaeum was named after the archeologist Earnest Beule who discovered the gate beneath Turkish bastion. The two rocky towers were originally erected in Roman times and expanded later by the Turks.
A line of stairs is divided by a terrace. The marble covering of the stairs has now been reconstructed. Earlier tourists suffered 60 to 70 accidents a year climbing the stairs. The Odeon was built by a wealthy and famous patron of Athens in memory of his deceased young wife following the standards of Roman theatre design. This theater, once very ornate and covered in marble could accommodate 6000 spectators. Its remains have been painstakingly restored and the Odeon now hosts the Athens festival every September. Left of the terrace stands a huge column. The marble memorial was erected in the second century BC to honor Iptheus Agrippa, son in law of Emperor Augustus. The almost 9m high base once supported a four horse war chariot in bronze but that has been lost.
The Propylaeum is the entrance to the Acropolis, an ornate gateway, a fitting overture to the fantastic sight that awaits us. It was commissioned by Pericles and designed by Phidias but construction started under the direction of Manacles after Pericles left Athens. The 18m wide and 24m long propylaeum is divided at the three halls by ionic columns. It originally had a coffered ceiling which was destroyed by an explosion in Turkish times.

The Temple of Olympian Zeus is a colossal ruined temple in the centre of the Greek capital Athens that was dedicated to Zeus, king of the Olympian gods. Pireus lies 10km southwest of the center of Athens. The rocky octi peninsula protectively embraces a larger and a smaller bay, both ideal natural harbors. This is why Pireus was already Athens' most important harbor in ancient times. Now, it has become part of the capital. Back in the 1960s, there were fields and meadows between the two cities. But over a few decades, these gradually gave way to apartment blocks, villas, public buildings, shopping centers and residences until the two became as one. If you're not travelling by car, you can take the metro from downtown Athens to Pireus harbor. In ancient times, the bays of Pireus served as commercial and military ports. Now, there's a commercial port and a ferry port for passengers and also a marina for yachts. The harbor is used by gigantic ocean liners, ferries and luxury passenger boats so it's a very busy place most of the time. Regular ferries from most Greek islands leave from the southwest quay of the greater harbor.
Themistocles realized that protecting the port city is crucial for Athens and he started to build fortifications and the long wall of defense. The harbor employed thousands of people so public building and temples were soon required. The ancient agora or marketplace is still there just like the square grid street plan drawn by the genius architect Hippodamus of Miletus. Although the city was destroyed several times in the course of history, it was always reconstructed according to the original plans of the greatest ancient architect. Pireus also has an archeological and naval museum.
Many tourists roam the winding coastal paths on the southwestern part of octi peninsula along the wall enjoying the view of the sea, the islands and the distant blue mountains. The bay was once called -- and was used as a military port. Today it's called -- and houses white luxury yachts and private sailboats. The circular bay, protected from the winds is carved into the east coast of the land strip and measures 400m in diameter. In the middle ages, the city was called Porto Leone after antique marble statue of a lion at the port entrance. The statue is no longer there. It's been guarding the arsenal of Venice since 1862.
The fishing port of Pireus is located further east in a similar circular bay. Tourkolimano at the foot of Castella Hills is also the harbor for the sports crowd. This is where beginners are introduced to the mysteries of sailing. Life is more tranquil here. Some tourists enjoy visiting the taverns and fish restaurants along the harbor. In addition to the beach, Tourcolimano has a fresh water swimming pool. A new stadium and other sports facilities have been constructed nearby. Pireus also receives ships coming in from North Africa and the Middle East which add a real oriental flavor to the brisk trading activities of the streets. The road to Perama and Daphne is the realm of north African rug traders.
