The story: The greatest trumpet player in the world has just finished a set in the Empire Room of the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. It’s 1971, and Louis Armstrong is at the end of his incredibly successful career. After retiring backstage, he begins to reminisce about his life, revealing an intimate, unknown portrait of the man behind the trumpet and the ever-evolving struggle to live with dignity as a Black musician in a White world. Armstrong’s story is told through the voice of a single actor playing both Armstrong and his Jewish manager Joe Glaser, bringing to life an emotional journey of deep friendship and its tragic destruction. Satchmo at the Waldorf is an intimate exploration of Armstrong’s life, legacy, and above all, jazz.
Fresh from off-Broadway, this remarkably imaginative play will enjoy its Midwest premiere under the electric direction of Artistic Director Charles Newell. Written with theatrical ingenuity by Terry Teachout, who has entrusted Artistic Director Charlie Newell with the play’s Midwest premiere.

Barry Shabaka Henley is a fixture in the Hollywood film industry, most often the films of director Michael Mann, having worked with the director four times. He will be starring in HBO's Luck with Dustin Hoffman next season and Shabaka played Herbert Muhammad in the acclaimed film Ali. In Collateral he made an impression as a sensitive jazz musician living on borrowed time. He also starred in Steven Spielberg's The Terminal. In Miami Vice, Henley succeeded Edward James Olmos as superior officer, Lt. Martin Castillo. He also appeared in the television series, Robbery Homicide Division and Barbershop. From 2009 to 2010, he played the recurring character of FBI Agent Vreede in FlashForward, an ABC television series. He also played Buddy in How Stella Got Her Groove Back. Henley supplied the role of Pokerface in the Eddie Murphy/Martin Lawrence film Life. As a stage actor, Henley's honors include the Drama Desk, Obie, and Olivier Awards. He has appeared in August Wilson's Jitney, Waiting for Godot, and Richard the 2nd at Taper LA. He was also a member of the West Coast Black Repertory Theatre and the San Francisco Mime Troupe.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A taxi driver is unexpectedly taken on the ride of his life in this stylish thriller from acclaimed director Michael Mann. Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run -- Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list. Collateral also stars Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, and Bruce McGill as police detectives hot on Vincent's trail.

Barry Shabaka Henley
Barry Shabaka Henley (born Barry Joseph Henley; September 15, 1954) is an American character actor. Henley is a fixture in many films, most often the films of director Michael Mann, having worked with the director five times.
Life and career
Born Barry Joseph Henley in New Orleans, Louisiana, Barry came somewhat late to acting, with his first appearance at the age of 37 in the unsold television pilot Clippers.
Henley played Herbert Muhammad in Ali, where he appeared with film stars Will Smith and Jamie Foxx. In Collateral, where he appeared again with Foxx and film co-star Tom Cruise, he portrayed a sensitive jazz musician living on borrowed time. He also starred in Steven Spielberg's The Terminal. In Miami Vice, Henley succeeded Edward James Olmos as superior officer, Lt. Martin Castillo, once again with film co-star Foxx along with Colin Farrell. He also appeared in the short-lived television series, Robbery Homicide Division and Barbershop. From 2009 to 2010, he played the recurring character of FBI Agent Vreede in FlashForward, an ABC television series. He also played Buddy in the 1998 film, How Stella Got Her Groove Back. In 1999 Henley supplied the role of Pokerface in the Eddie Murphy/Martin Lawrence film Life. In 2010, Shabaka played the character Dr. Olson in the season 3 Lie to Me episode "Veronica". As a stage actor, Henley's honors include the Drama Desk, Obie, and Olivier Awards. He was also a member of the West Coast Black Repertory Theatre and the San Francisco Mime Troupe.

A taxi driver is unexpectedly taken on the ride of his life in this stylish thriller from acclaimed director Michael Mann. Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run -- Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list. Galileo clearly saw that old ideas die hard. By publishing in common Italian, however, rather than Latin—that era's scholarly language—he demonstrated his belief that new ideas should be made available to the community.
Across the centuries, Galileo speaks to Portlanders today through a unique collaboration between the New Rose Theatre and the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI). jointly they crafted a series of events designed to draw artists, academics, scientists and the community into a dialogue about the social effects of scientific discovery. The centerpiece of the project is the New Rose's production of Bertolt Brecht's ""The Life of Galileo"".
Our program today will feature Michael Griggs, Artistic Director of the New Rose, who will explain the background and genesis of the project and how the unique features of live theatre contribute to a more interdependent, socially responsible community. Dr. Ian Dubrowski. OMSI Science Program Director, will discuss why this collaboration is important to OMSI and its commitment to the people of Oregon. Heinz-Uwe Haus, the play’s director and visiting Director-in-Residence from East Berlin, is an expert on staging Brecht plays and will speak about the international importance of this work.
Haus will also introduce the highlight of our program, a scene from the play when Galileo, portrayed by San Francisco-based actor, Shabaka, delivers one of the drama's crucial messages. Funds for the Project were made possible through the Metropolitan Arts Commission with additional support from the Oregon Committee for the Humanities. "

Armstrong’s story is told through the voice of a single actor playing both Armstrong and his Jewish manager Joe Glaser, bringing to life an emotional journey of deep friendship and its tragic destruction. Satchmo at the Waldorf is an intimate exploration of Armstrong’s life, legacy, and above all, jazz.
Fresh from off-Broadway, this remarkably imaginative play will enjoy its Midwest premiere under the electric direction of Artistic Director Charles Newell. Written with theatrical ingenuity by Terry Teachout, who has entrusted Artistic Director Charlie Newell with the play’s Midwest premiere.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A taxi driver is unexpectedly taken on the ride of his life in this stylish thriller from acclaimed director Michael Mann. Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run -- Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list. Collateral also stars Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, and Bruce McGill as police detectives hot on Vincent's trail.

The story: The greatest trumpet player in the world has just finished a set in the Empire Room of the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York. It’s 1971, and Louis Armstrong is at the end of his incredibly successful career. After retiring backstage, he begins to reminisce about his life, revealing an intimate, unknown portrait of the man behind the trumpet and the ever-evolving struggle to live with dignity as a Black musician in a White world. Armstrong’s story is told through the voice of a single actor playing both Armstrong and his Jewish manager Joe Glaser, bringing to life an emotional journey of deep friendship and its tragic destruction. Satchmo at the Waldorf is an intimate exploration of Armstrong’s life, legacy, and above all, jazz.
Fresh from off-Broadway, this remarkably imaginative play will enjoy its Midwest premiere under the electric direction of Artistic Director Charles Newell. Written with theatrical ingenuity by Terry Teachout, who has entrusted Artistic Director Charlie Newell with the play’s Midwest premiere.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
A taxi driver is unexpectedly taken on the ride of his life in this stylish thriller from acclaimed director Michael Mann. Max (Jamie Foxx) is a cab driver who hopes to some day open his own limo company; one night behind the wheel begins promisingly when he picks up Annie (Jada Pinkett Smith), an attorney working with the federal government who is attractive, friendly, and gives him her business card after paying her fare. Max thinks his luck is getting even better when his next fare, Vincent (Tom Cruise), offers him several hundred dollars in cash if he'll be willing to drop him off, wait, and pick him up at five different spots over the course of the evening. Max agrees, but he soon realizes Vincent isn't just another guy with errands to run -- Vincent is an assassin who has been paid to murder five people who could put the leaders of a powerful drug trafficking ring behind bars in an upcoming trial. As circumstances force Max to do Vincent's bidding, the cabbie has to find a way to prevent Vincent from killing again and save his own skin, a task that becomes especially crucial when he discovers Annie is one of the names on Vincent's hit list. Collateral also stars Mark Ruffalo, Peter Berg, and Bruce McGill as police detectives hot on Vincent's trail.

Movie Synopsis :
Viktor Navorski is a man without a country; his plane took off just as a coup d'etat exploded in his homeland, leaving it in shambles, and now he's stranded at Kennedy Airport, where he's holding a passport that nobody recognizes. While quarantined in the transit lounge until authorities can figure out what to do with him, Viktor simply goes on living â and courts romance with a beautiful flight attendant.
