Union Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti on Tuesday approved the Rs 4,000 crore Lakhwar multi-purpose project. The Ministry will soon send this project to the Union Cabinet for approval.
This was announced after Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar met Bharti regarding different water projects for Haryana in New Delhi on Tuesday. Bharti said that the foundation stone of the project would be laid by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
With this project, which is located in Uttarakhand, water would be made available to Haryana, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Delhi and Rajasthan. Haryana would get 48 per cent of the total water. This would provide additional water supply of 1.22 lakh acre feet to Haryana and would help in maintaining the natural flow of Yamuna river.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister also discussed the Renuka and Kishau projects and the matter of bringing water to Masani Barrage on Sahibi river, which would provide water to southern Haryana, including districts of Mewat, Gurgaon and Mahendragarh. The Union Minister said that a high-level meeting of the states concerned would soon be held.
Khattar submitted a proposal for rejuvenation of Yamuna river. A scheme has been prepared by the Haryana Forests and Environment Department for plantation of saplings and construction of reservoirs along the banks of the river at a cost of Rs 110 crore.
