A recap of our arduous climb of Mount Whitney. We started our ascent at 3:30AM, and made it to the top of Trail Crest through a hefty amount of snow - especially up the chute since the switchbacks were not passable!
Short compilation of clips from our backpacking trek to the top of Mount Whitney. We spent the first night at Horseshoe Meadows to acclimate to the elevation. We stopped by Mobius Arch in Alabama Hills before heading up to the Whitney Portal to spend one night there. We began our hike into the Whitney Zone on Sunday, July 27th, 2014. We spent Sunday night at Trail Camp before beginning our ascent to the top of Mount Whitney at 3:00am Monday morning. We reached the summit at about 6:00am Monday, July 28th. After the summit, we hiked back down to Trail Camp, packed up our belongings and headed back down to the portal.

On Friday, June 28, 2013 I along with my two friends Colin and David made the 22 mile, nearly 6,200 ft of gain roundtrip to the summit of Mt. Whitney (14,505 ft) from the Whitney Portal (8,360 ft). It took us a little over 4:30 to summit, paused about an hour as we waited for Colin to summit and just a little under 8 hours roundtrip. So glad I got to experience this and cross this one off the bucket list. A truly epic day. -

Follow my training, preparation and eventual ascent of Mt. Whitney in one day. I left the Whitney Portal, September 5, 2013 at 2:20 a.m. and reached the summit at 10:34 a.m. I returned back down to the portal that same day at 7:39 p.m. in the evening. It was the adventure of a lifetime! Temperatures ranged from -11F to 87F, with wind gusts of 40 mph. I traveled 22.4 miles with a 6,100 foot increase in elevation overlooking some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world including: John Muir Wilderness, Sequoia National Forest, Yosemite Park and Kings Canyon.....This is a must for any adventurer's bucket list!

Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route - April 3-4, 2015. 19 Miles Round Trip; 8,000 Ft Elev Gain; 19,094 Cal Burned. Nature Church Official Outing - Group of 6 Whitney is the tallest mountain in the contiguous US at 14,505 feet. The trailhead is at approx 8,380 feet, for a net elevation gain of 6,125 ft. The mountaineers route is normally 12 miles round trip, but on the first day we accidentally went 3.5 miles in the wrong direction, gaining 1,890 ft from where we should have turned off at the mountaineers route, all the way up to Mirror lake, at which point we realized we were in the wrong canyon. This made for an exhausting first day. Because of the mistake, we also ran out of daylight and camped further down on the mountain at lower Boy Scout Lake. Hiked the big one in one day, 22 miles in 14.5 hours. We left the trailhead at Whitney Portal at 12:20 am and got to the summit at 8 am. We stayed at the top for 45 minutes and took our time coming back down. We stopped at Trail Crest, Trail Camp to check out the marmots, and Mirror Lake to take plunge. We got back to the Whitney Portal at 3:45 and had lunch at the Portal Cafe. The total hike distance was 22 miles and the elevation gain was 6,600 feet. We trained for the hike at Iron Mountain, Mt. San Gorgonio, and Mt. San Jacinto.

On Friday, June 28, 2013 I along with my two friends Colin and David made the 22 mile, nearly 6,200 ft of gain roundtrip to the summit of Mt. Whitney (14,505 ft) from the Whitney Portal (8,360 ft). It took us a little over 4:30 to summit, paused about an hour as we waited for Colin to summit and just a little under 8 hours roundtrip. So glad I got to experience this and cross this one off the bucket list. A truly epic day.

Whitney is the tallest mountain in the contiguous US at 14,505 feet. The trailhead is at approx 8,380 feet, for a net elevation gain of 6,125 ft. The mountaineers route is normally 12 miles round trip, but on the first day we accidentally went 3.5 miles in the wrong direction, gaining 1,890 ft from where we should have turned off at the mountaineers route, all the way up to Mirror lake, at which point we realized we were in the wrong canyon. This made for an exhausting first day. Because of the mistake, we also ran out of daylight and camped further down on the mountain at lower Boy Scout Lake. The second day we started at 5 am, reached the summit around 2 pm, got back to our camp at 6 pm, and made it back to the cars at 10 pm.
The calorie burn listed above was calculated by a Polar continuous heart rate monitor worn during waking hours of the two days we were on the trail.
