Fairmount Park was founded along the meadow lands of Spring Brook in 1898 and was named after what was at the time the"greatest city park in the world", Fairmount Park in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. In 1903, a simple dam was made acroos the brook forming Fairmount Lake. This land were the dam was built had been donated by Samuel Cary Evans Sr., a Riverside Land Speculator. Mr. Evans son (junior) later became mayor of Riverside and donated even more land to make the lake bigger, and in 1923 a larger dam was built to form a larger lake, now named after Samuel Evans Jr.( although it really should have been named after Mr. Evans Sr. as he was the original donor of the land.) Over the years , floods have caused a lot of damage to the lake, so continual rebuiding and maintenance has been neccessary. In 1937, it was so cold here in southern California (believe it or not), that the lake froze over thick enough to make ice skating possible! Today, Spring Brook actually provides very little water to the lake, so three wells sucking water from the underground water table below the Santa Ana River keeps the 36 acre lake filled. Sailing and Fishing are allowed on the lake which contains carp, bluegill sunfish, bass, rainbow trout, channel catfish and crappie.

When it comes to grand openings, a ribbon cutting isn’t satisfactory for ironworkers.
With sparks flying Local 229 of The International Association of Bridge and Structural Ironworkers cut through a steel beam to announce the opening of their new University of Iron training center off Home Avenue in Fairmount Park.
The $7 million facility offers ironwork experience and safety training to high school graduates and equivalents for the union’s four year paid apprenticeship program.
Apprentices to the trade are paid at half the union starting rate and upon completing the program as journeymen are eligible for full union pay starting at $33.50 per hour.
District 9 Councilmember Marti Emerald applauded the local union for investing in trade development in a region with concentrated poverty and low wages earners.
“They build the great towers, they build our cities, they build our hospitals, they build our roads and bridges,” Emerald said. “And this facility is going to make a lasting difference for a new generation of men and women who weave a stronger fabric for our community.”
The application window for the apprenticeship program is ongoing and those interested can contact Ironworkers Local 229.

Abstract
In 1908 a Philadelphia newspaper featured a lengthy report on a storefront church headed by two black Cubans who evidently used Edisonian technology (converging as it was by then with Spiritualist uses of sound projection, telephony and phonography) to project "spirit voices" onto the street. The details of the report leave no doubt that the leaders of this church had drawn inspiration from (or were members of) the male esoteric sodality of Abakuá which, by then formed a vital part of Havana's harborside social worlds, but had also experienced Atlantic dispersion in the course of Cuba's wars of independence. Though ultimately speculative, this paper uses this case to discuss Abakuá's central conception of the disembodied voice of a mystical entity named ecué, and its multiply mediated ritual reproduction and transmission across space and time with the aim to cast new light on (by now largely naturalized) ideologies of auditory modernity. I suggest that once we conceive of contemporary manifestations of ecué as a sonic mask, the choice of Edisonian technologies of phonic transduction on the part of the leaders of the Philadelphia temple -- while inconsequential in the long run -- might have been a logical one. If so, then I would argue that this may actually tell us quite a bit about the transformations in Western auditory cultures and sonic ideologies heralded by the advent of analog sound technologies at the turn of the twentieth century.

Host Ed Sutkowski talks with John L. Rotz a Hall of Fame Jockey.
After graduating high school in 1952, Mr. Rotz worked at Fairmount Park Racetrack in Collinsville, Illinois as a groom, hot walker, and exercise rider. And then he began riding professionally in 1953. Nicknamed "Gentleman John" because of his polite demeanor, he gained a reputation for being able to handle temperamental Thoroughbreds.
During a 20-year riding career, Mr. Rotz rode in 20,286 races and won 2,907 races, i.e., a winning percentage of 14.3%, including 11 major wins. He won more stakes races than any other jockey in American racing. He earned two wins in the American Classic Races, the first coming in 1962 when he rode Greek Money to victory in the Preakness Stakes, A year earlier, he had finished second in the Preakness aboard Globemaster and earned another second place finish in 1968 with King Ranch's Out of the Way. He got his second Classic race win aboard High Echelon in the 1970 Belmont Stakes. Mr. Rotz was inducted in the United States' National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 1983.
In 1973, Mr. Rotz was voted the George Woolf Memorial Jockey Award, given to a jockey in North America who demonstrates high standards of personal and professional conduct, on and off the racetrack. He retired from riding that year following surgery for a foot injury, but he remained active in the industry, working for ten years as a racing steward at various racetracks in Louisiana, Ohio, Delaware and New York. While working at Thistledown Racecourse in North Randall, Ohio in 1975, he met his wife, Mary, whose sister was a horse trainer at the track.
