"Howard Ashman was a native of Baltimore who grew up loving theater.
In 1974, after graduating from Goddard College in Vermont and receiving his MFA from Indiana University—where he was also a member of the professional acting company—Ashman moved to New York. In 1976, his play, The Confirmation, was produced at Princeton's McCarter Theater.
A founder of the WPA Theater, Ashman was also its Artistic Director. At the WPA, he conceived, wrote and directed a musical adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's God Bless You Mr. Rosewater with music by Alan Menken.
In 1982 he conceived, wrote and directed Little Shop of Horrors, again with music by Mr. Menken. The musical, based upon Roger Corman's 1960s-era horror flick was immediately successful, indeed it soon became a New York "must see" playing for five years off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theater in lower Manhattan. The show played LA and London's West End, Japan, Scandinavia and Europe and continues to be produced to great acclaim around the world. In 2003, Little Shop was revived on Broadway and in 2007 it was revived on London's West End. It is currently one of the most-produced shows in American High Schools.
In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical, Smile, which featured music by Marvin Hamlisch. Little appreciated at the time, Smile is now considered a lost gem of musical theater and is performed by high schools and amateur groups around the US.
Turning his talents toward film, Ashman was pivotal in the renaissance of Disney animated musicals and in the development of Disney's The Little Mermaid (Producer and Lyrics), Beauty and the Beast (Executive Producer and Lyrics) and Aladdin (Lyrics), all with music by Alan Menken.
Ashman's contributions to the revival of classic Disney animated musicals were perhaps best expressed by his colleagues, who dedicated the film Beauty and the Beast to his memory: "To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. He will be forever missed."
Ashman's numerous awards include two Oscars, two Golden Globes, four Grammys, a Drama Desk and a London Evening Standard. He died in 1991 at age 40 from complications arising from AIDS." - HowardAshman.com

Beauty and the Beast is a 1991 American animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. The 30th film in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series and the third film of the Disney Renaissance period, the film is based on the fairy tale La Belle et la Bête by Jeanne-Marie Le Prince de Beaumont and uses some ideas from the 1946 film of the same name. The film centers around a prince who is transformed into a Beast and a young woman named Belle whom he imprisons in his castle. To become a prince again, the Beast must love Belle and win her love in return, or he will remain a Beast forever.
The film's animation screenplay was written by Linda Woolverton with story written by Roger Allers, Brenda Chapman, Chris Sanders, Burny Mattinson, Kevin Harkey, Brian Pimental, Bruce Woodside, Joe Ranft, Tom Ellery, Kelly Ashbury, and Robert Lence, directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, and produced by Don Hahn. The music of the film was composed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, both of whom had written the music and songs for Disney's The Little Mermaid. The film was dedicated to Ashman, who died before this film and the next Disney movie Aladdin were finished.

"Howard Ashman was a native of Baltimore who grew up loving theater.
In 1974, after graduating from Goddard College in Vermont and receiving his MFA from Indiana University—where he was also a member of the professional acting company—Ashman moved to New York. In 1976, his play, The Confirmation, was produced at Princeton's McCarter Theater.
A founder of the WPA Theater, Ashman was also its Artistic Director. At the WPA, he conceived, wrote and directed a musical adaptation of Kurt Vonnegut's God Bless You Mr. Rosewater with music by Alan Menken.
In 1982 he conceived, wrote and directed Little Shop of Horrors, again with music by Mr. Menken. The musical, based upon Roger Corman's 1960s-era horror flick was immediately successful, indeed it soon became a New York "must see" playing for five years off-Broadway at the Orpheum Theater in lower Manhattan. The show played LA and London's West End, Japan, Scandinavia and Europe and continues to be produced to great acclaim around the world. In 2003, Little Shop was revived on Broadway and in 2007 it was revived on London's West End. It is currently one of the most-produced shows in American High Schools.
In 1986, Ashman wrote and directed the Broadway musical, Smile, which featured music by Marvin Hamlisch. Little appreciated at the time, Smile is now considered a lost gem of musical theater and is performed by high schools and amateur groups around the US.
Turning his talents toward film, Ashman was pivotal in the renaissance of Disney animated musicals and in the development of Disney's The Little Mermaid (Producer and Lyrics), Beauty and the Beast (Executive Producer and Lyrics) and Aladdin (Lyrics), all with music by Alan Menken.
Ashman's contributions to the revival of classic Disney animated musicals were perhaps best expressed by his colleagues, who dedicated the film Beauty and the Beast to his memory: "To our friend Howard, who gave a mermaid her voice and a beast his soul. He will be forever missed."
Ashman's numerous awards include two Oscars, two Golden Globes, four Grammys, a Drama Desk and a London Evening Standard. He died in 1991 at age 40 from complications arising from AIDS." - HowardAshman.com

Beauty and the Beast -- Live on Stage at Disney's Hollywood Studios theme park is a live-action, 25-minute, Broadway-style musical for Guests of all ages based on the hit film.
"Be our Guest" for this enchanting production of "a tale as old as time" at the lavish 1,500-seat Theater of the Stars along Sunset Boulevard. Relive all the romance and magic of the classic Disney film in this elaborately staged, effects-laden production that brings to life the classic love story of Belle and the Beast, and features Disney character favorites like Gaston, Lumiere, Mrs. Potts and more.
Beauty and the Beast -- Live on Stage recounts the beauty of the original film. Through the use of extravagant costumes and vivid set pieces, showstopping dance numbers, and 5 classic songs—including "Be Our Guest" and "Beauty and the Beast"—it's a show that promises a fairy tale ending every time.
The show features some of the beloved vocal talents from the hit film, including Robby Benson as the Beast, Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Potts and Jerry Orbach as Lumiere.
I recorded this family video on November 12, 2010 at Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World using my Canon HV30. All references to Disney characters are property of Walt Disney Co.
