Dead zones are hypoxic (low-oxygen) areas in the world's oceans and large lakes, caused by "excessive nutrient pollution from human activities coupled with other factors that deplete the oxygen required to support most marine life in bottom and near-bottom water. (NOAA)." In the 1970s oceanographers began noting increased instances of dead zones. These occur near inhabited coastlines, where aquatic life is most concentrated. (The vast middle portions of the oceans, which naturally have little life, are not considered "dead zones".)
In March 2004, when the recently established UN Environment Programme published its first Global Environment Outlook Year Book (GEO Year Book 2003), it reported 146 dead zones in the world's oceans where marine life could not be supported due to depleted oxygen levels. Some of these were as small as a square kilometre (0.4 mi²), but the largest dead zone covered 70,000 square kilometres (27,000 mi²). A 2008 study counted 405 dead zones worldwide.

Alan Lewitus is a Supervisory Oceanographer at the NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research (CSCOR). He serves as Branch Chief for the Ecosystem Stressors Research Branch of CSCOR and oversees competitive programs in hypoxia, harmful algal blooms, and sea level rise. Since joining NOAA in October 2005, Dr. Lewitus has been closely involved in activities related to research and management of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, including coordinating and facilitating efforts to mitigate the northern Gulf hypoxic zone (aka “Dead Zone”). He is a member of the NOAA Gulf of Mexico Regional Collaboration Team, is co-Chair of the Gulf Alliance Water Quality Team Harmful Algal Bloom Work Group, and a NOAA representative to the Gulf Hypoxia Task Force (as Coordinating Committee member) and the Eastern Tallgrass Prairies and Big Rivers Landscape Conservation Cooperative (as Steering Committee member).
His background is in phytoplankton ecology and physiology, with research interests that include coastal eutrophication, the ecology of harmful algal blooms, microbial food web dynamics, and the role and measurement of phytoplankton pigments, and he has over 90 peer-reviewed publications on these subjects. Prior to joining NOAA, Dr. Lewitus held a joint position with the University of South Carolina and SC Department of Natural Resources as Director of the SC Algal Ecology Laboratories and SC Harmful Algal Bloom Program. He holds a BA from Rutgers University, a MS degree in Marine Sciences from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories with a Physical Oceanography discipline, and a PhD in Biological Oceanography from the MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute joint program.
Presentation: The Northern Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone
Description: The northern portion of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, which contains almost half of the nation’s coastal wetlands and supports commercial and recreational fisheries which generate billions of dollars annually, has undergone profound changes due to nutrient enrichment of Mississippi River water from land-based sources. This over-enrichment of nutrients stimulates the development of seasonal hypoxia (very low oxygen waters) over the Louisiana/Texas continental shelf in summer and results in the largest recurring hypoxic zone (aka “Dead Zone”) in the United States. Hypoxic waters can cause habitat loss, stress and even death to marine organisms; affecting commercial harvests and the health of impacted ecosystems.
This issue has become a focal point for considerable scientific and policy attention because of the hypoxic zone’s enormous size and implications for watershed management for more than 40% of the contiguous United States. I will present a historical perspective of research into the causes and ecosystem impacts of the Dead Zone, and of the attempts of an interagency Task Force (federal, state, and tribes) to fix the problem.

Ocean "dead zones" along the Washington and Oregon coasts are threatening critical U.S. fishing areas. These oxygen-depleted regions, that loose virtually all of their marine life in the summer, are expanding, and new ones are appearing in the Pacific Ocean. Oceanographer Jack Barth of Oregon State University says these new ocean dead zones are different from most of the 400+ others known around the world. While the majority of those are caused by excess nutrients in river runoffs, his research is the first to tie these new dead zones to climate change. Dead zone (ecology)
Dead zones are hypoxic (low-oxygen) areas in the world's oceans and large lakes, caused by "excessive nutrient pollution from human activities coupled with other factors that deplete the oxygen required to support most marine life in bottom and near-bottom water. (NOAA)." In the 1970s oceanographers began noting increased instances of dead zones. These occur near inhabited coastlines, where aquatic life is most concentrated. (The vast middle portions of the oceans, which naturally have little life, are not considered "dead zones".) Alan Lewitus is a Supervisory Oceanographer at the NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research (CSCOR). The creation of nitrogen fertilizers have greatly benefited humans by increasing crop yields and ensuring food security in many areas of the world. While some places need more fertilizer, like much of sub-Sahara Africa, many places are rife with nitrogen. The overabundance of nitrogen, particularly nitrates, creates a host of environmental problems, including dead zone formation, elevation of infectious disease, drive harmful algal blooms, enhance greenhouse gas emissions, among other negative consequences. Alan Lewitus is a Supervisory Oceanographer at the NOAA National Ocean Service (NOS) National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) Center for Sponsored Coastal Ocean Research (CSCOR). He serves as Branch Chief for the Ecosystem Stressors Research Branch of CSCOR and oversees competitive programs in hypoxia, harmful algal blooms, and sea level rise. Since joining NOAA in October 2005, Dr. Lewitus has been closely involved in activities related to research and management of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, including coordinating and facilitating efforts to mitigate the northern Gulf hypoxic zone (aka “Dead Zone”). He is a member of the NOAA Gulf of Mexico Regional Collaboration Team, is co-Chair of the Gulf Alliance Water Quality Team Harmful Algal Bloom Work Group, and a NOAA representative to the Gulf Hypoxia Task Force (as Coordinating Committee member) and the Eastern Tallgrass Prairies and Big Rivers Landscape Conservation Cooperative (as Steering Committee member).
His background is in phytoplankton ecology and physiology, with research interests that include coastal eutrophication, the ecology of harmful algal blooms, microbial food web dynamics, and the role and measurement of phytoplankton pigments, and he has over 90 peer-reviewed publications on these subjects. Prior to joining NOAA, Dr. Lewitus held a joint position with the University of South Carolina and SC Department of Natural Resources as Director of the SC Algal Ecology Laboratories and SC Harmful Algal Bloom Program. He holds a BA from Rutgers University, a MS degree in Marine Sciences from Moss Landing Marine Laboratories with a Physical Oceanography discipline, and a PhD in Biological Oceanography from the MIT/Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute joint program.
Presentation: The Northern Gulf of Mexico Dead Zone
Description: The northern portion of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem, which contains almost half of the nation’s coastal wetlands and supports commercial and recreational fisheries which generate billions of dollars annually, has undergone profound changes due to nutrient enrichment of Mississippi River water from land-based sources. This over-enrichment of nutrients stimulates the development of seasonal hypoxia (very low oxygen waters) over the Louisiana/Texas continental shelf in summer and results in the largest recurring hypoxic zone (aka “Dead Zone”) in the United States. Hypoxic waters can cause habitat loss, stress and even death to marine organisms; affecting commercial harvests and the health of impacted ecosystems.
This issue has become a focal point for considerable scientific and policy attention because of the hypoxic zone’s enormous size and implications for watershed management for more than 40% of the contiguous United States. I will present a historical perspective of research into the causes and ecosystem impacts of the Dead Zone, and of the attempts of an interagency Task Force (federal, state, and tribes) to fix the problem.

Oceanographer Jack Barth of Oregon State University says these new ocean dead zones are different from most of the 400+ others known around the world. While the majority of those are caused by excess nutrients in river runoffs, his research is the first to tie these new dead zones to climate change. With support from the National Science Foundation, Bath is also using an impressive new tool, an unmanned underwater glider that provides round the clock monitoring of these zones.

The size and number of marine dead zones (areas where the deep water is so low in dissolved oxygen that sea creatures can't survive) have grown explosively in the past half-century. It's no coincidence that dead zones occur downriver of places where human population density is high. Some of the fertilizer we apply to crops is washed into streams and rivers. Fertilizer-laden runoff triggers explosive planktonic algae growth in coastal areas. The algae die and rain down into deep waters, where their remains are like fertilizer for microbes. The microbes descompose the organic matter, using up the oxygen.

It would protect the whole Puget Sound and Lake Washington and would end the dumping of raw sewage from overseas ships just 3 miles from the shoreline. Currently our Sound has 5 "dead zones from contamination in our waters.(Incidentally, most bodies of water on the East coast have enjoyed these protections for over10 years)
Our Sound has some of the best seafood and recreational fun anywhere. Let's protect it!

The creation of nitrogen fertilizers have greatly benefited humans by increasing crop yields and ensuring food security in many areas of the world. While some places need more fertilizer, like much of sub-Sahara Africa, many places are rife with nitrogen. The overabundance of nitrogen, particularly nitrates, creates a host of environmental problems, including dead zone formation, elevation of infectious disease, drive harmful algal blooms, enhance greenhouse gas emissions, among other negative consequences. The challenge ahead is maximize the obvious benefits while minimizing the damaging effects of nitrogen use. Here, I briefly describe findings presented in a paper published in the journal Nature ("Stoichiometric control of organic carbon-nitrate relationships from soils to the sea", April 22nd issue, 2010) that explains how nitrate accumulates from soils to the seas across earth's biomes. Our findings represent a new framework to understand the fate of nitrate in ecosystems worldwide, which could help management strategies targeting nitrogen pollution. From there she went on to publish her first book in 2004, Dancing at the Dead Sea: Tracking the World's Environmental Hotspots. Her most recent book, an international best-seller, is "Sea Sick: The Global Ocean in Crisis". In 2008 Mitchell won the Atkinson Fellowship in Journalism award to conduct a new course of study on the intersection of neuroscience and education. In 2010 she won the prestigious Grantham Prize for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment for her book Sea Sick. Currently, Alanna is an independent journalist and author.

I cannot believe the nonchalance around the huge environmental catastrophes that have gone on in just the last five years alone — specifically, the Gulf Oil Spill and the Fukushima Japan nuclear disaster. When the BP disaster was ongoing and gushing devastating amounts of oil into the Gulf, Donna Brazille, Democrat TV pundit, frustrated with the Obama Administration’s response to the Spill, fumed aloud, “Where is the fierce urgency of Now?!!!”
But these hugely unprecedented environmental catastrophes, daily spreading the damage to our planet, are just two canaries in a coal mine.
We are just beginning to understand the immensity of the damage to our planet the Fukushima disaster did. We will probably not be told the degree of radiation exposure from it we are receiving from it until long after people have been dying in droves from it.
The BP oil spill of 2010 is, similarly, presenting ongoing planetary damage, which, like the Japan nuclear disaster is not being reported. Dolphin and whale carcasses in the hundreds were washing up on Gulf beaches, birds were dying and some were simply dropping dead out of the sky. We know for sure of at least one dead zone caused by the BP oil spill. Remember, a dead zone is an area in the ocean where nothing can live for lack of oxygen. This one is a hundred miles long and twelve miles wide. I have heard reports of other dead zones cropping up in the Gulf, and it has been said they are *growing* in size with time. Beyond these we have to wonder how many more there are, yet unknown, and how great is the ongoing damage.
But none of these dire events are being mentioned much in the media. We hear the reports, then the media directs our attention to something else. When Fukushima was being actively monitored by the media in 2011, I heard CNN report some very apocalyptic developments occurring there. Immediately afterward, CNN directed our attention to some in-depth reporting on a snake that had gotten loose in New York City.
I mean, really?
So we cover our eyes to what is going on.

The BP oil spill of 2010 is, similarly, presenting ongoing planetary damage, which, like the Japan nuclear disaster is not being reported. Dolphin and whale carcasses in the hundreds were washing up on Gulf beaches, birds were dying and some were simply dropping dead out of the sky. We know for sure of at least one dead zone caused by the BP oil spill. Remember, a dead zone is an area in the ocean where nothing can live for lack of oxygen. This one is a hundred miles long and twelve miles wide. I have heard reports of other dead zones cropping up in the Gulf, and it has been said they are *growing* in size with time. Beyond these we have to wonder how many more there are, yet unknown, and how great is the ongoing damage.
But none of these dire events are being mentioned much in the media. We hear the reports, then the media directs our attention to something else. When Fukushima was being actively monitored by the media in 2011, I heard CNN report some very apocalyptic developments occurring there. Immediately afterward, CNN directed our attention to some in-depth reporting on a snake that had gotten loose in New York City.
I mean, really?
So we cover our eyes to what is going on.

At Science Pub Corvallis, Steve Brandt, director of the Oregon Sea Grant program, will discuss findings from six seasons of subsurface exploration in the low-oxygen waters of the northern Gulf of Mexico. And he'll share what was different about this year's cruise, which began after the United States' largest recorded oil well blow-out was capped in July.
"Recently there has been an alarming increase in the spatial and temporal extent of low-oxygen conditions in estuaries and coastal waters," says Brandt. "We call them 'dead zones' in the media because we presume there are drastic impacts on living resources such as shrimp and fish."

Abstract: Nonpoint source water pollution, or diffuse pollution, stems from runoff of precipitation or irrigation from urban and rural areas. The risks posed by polluted runoff increases as population and urbanization increase and, in many cases, contribute to eutrophication and hypoxia of freshwater lakes and rivers, and the marked increase of so - called “dead zones” in coastal area around the world. Internationally , impacts to coastal water quality and related ecosystems and ecosystem services are topics of scientific and policy research and mitigation. Pacific coastal water quality, however, is not well investigated nor are the impacts from inland contaminants understood, in part due to a belief that our coastal waters are pristine and our biggest impact is from seasonal hypoxia caused by natural upwelling of deep nitrate. In 2012, ground-breaking forensic work by fisheries scientists and veterinarians in Vancouver correlated marine mammal deaths off British Columbia with pathogens normally affecting humans, livestock, and pets. The potential connection of these findings with nonpoint source pollutants begged to be investigated and the author will present a synopsis of ongoing interdisciplinary research into best practices and policy approaches to reduce polluted runoff to the Pacific coast, beginning with coastal British Columbia, but including Washington, Oregon, California, and Baja California.

The SWRCB is developing nutrient objectives to protect and restore California water
bodies from adverse effects of nutrient over-enrichment. The proposed approach,
termed the Nutrient Numeric Endpoint (NNE) framework, involves developing numeric endpoints that will serve as guidance in translating narrative water quality objectives for nutrients and biostimulatory substances. These endpoints are based on indicators of the ecological response to nutrient-overenrichment, rather than measures of nutrient concentration or loading per se. The framework has been completed for streams and lakes and is now under development for estuaries. Studies have been completed that
have attempted to identify thresholds of adverse effect of macroalgal blooms on benthic habitat quality in estuarine intertidal flats. The SWRCB is considering using these studies to establish regulatory endpoints for regulating the effects of eutrophication in macroalgal-dominated estuaries. This webinar provides a technical presentation of the results of those studies.
Dr. Martha Sutula is head of the Biogeochemistry Department at the Southern
California Coastal Water Research Project (SCCWRP), where she oversees projects related to eutrophication and harmful algal blooms in streams, estuaries and nearshore waters. Her most recent work includes providing technical support to the California State Water Board to develop estuarine nutrient objectives.
Dr. Peggy Fong is a Full Professor and Vice Chair of UCLA's Department of Ecology
and Evolutionary Biology. Her research lies at the intersection of community and
ecosystem ecology with an overarching goal to use her results to inform conservation of marine ecosystems and communities. She has studied the effects of climate change, nutrient enrichment, and accelerating human use of natural resources in many critical marine habitats including coastal estuaries and lagoons, coral reefs, kelp forests and seagrass beds.
Dr. Lauri Green is an ecologist whose research has focused on investigating
relationships between macroalgal blooms, benthic habitat quality, and success of
estuarine bird foraging. She received her doctorate from UCLA's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. She is currently serving as a post-doctoral research associate at Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in Florida.

Inspired in part by the ideas of longtime Burlington resident Murray Bookchin, the Kurdish people have organized an autonomous territory the size of Connecticut named Rojava, based on these principles. However, the Kurdish movement in northern Syria and in southeastern Turkey is facing extreme repression by the authoritarian government of Tayyip Erdogan in Turkey.
Burlington resident Janet Biehl has visited Rojava twice on solidarity delegations, most recently in October, and will be discussing the promises and challenges the revolution is facing, as well as opportunities for solidarity in the US. Amid a raging debate over what caused the Uttarakhand disaster, Environment Min Jayanthi Natarajan today (June 20) said the proposal to declare certain parts of the state as eco-sensitive needs to be seriously considered, in view of the calamity, and that authorities should not compromise with the fragile ecology of the region. Environmentalists maintained that the flood ravage was a man-made disaster waiting to happen while the administration insisted it was a natural calamity. TIMES NOW yesterday (June 19) said that the flash floods and the monsoon mayhem in N India is a result of a man made disaster. TIMES NOW exposed how politicians colluded with each other to block a eco zone proposal, a plan which if implemented, would have reduced the scale of human loss. Today, TIMES NOW has the complete trail of documents that reveal how successive Govts gave in to Sand and Mining Mafia. Even, MET warnings were ignored, even a CAG report was overlooked. There is a complete collapse of responsibility and accountability in the human tragedy. To these bureaucrats and politicians who live in their own shell of self delusion and zero accountability, the rising death toll, the torn families, the scale of human loss and suffering does not matter. What matters to them is that even now, the people of India should not ask the real questions as to what has compounded the scale of the tragedy. Which is why I must reveal something more tonight.
Flash floods and landslides triggered by the monsoon fury left over 150 dead in calamity-hit Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. 50,000 people are still said to be stranded in various parts of Uttarakhand. The calamity has ruined thousands of homes, rest houses and buildings. The official death toll still stood at 150. Normal life was badly disrupted in Kinnaur and Sirmaur districts of Himachal. 14 persons were reported dead in the state, out of which 10 died in Kinnaur dist, 2 each in Shimla and Sirmour dists.
