The "Jewel of the California Missions," Mission San Juan Capistrano was founded by Franciscan Padre Junipero Serra on Nov. 1, 1776. The mission was the 7th of 21 California missions established along El Camino Real, The Kings Road.
It was here, in 1779, that California's first vineyard of criolla grapes was planted, and where experts believe the state's wine industry began. The first sacramental wines were produced here in 1783.
In 1818, a band of pirates led by Hipolito Bouchard landed at Dana Point and moved inland, raiding the Mission of its food and wine. Fortunately, residents were warned of the assault and hid most of the Mission's gold and treasure.
Highlights of the mission include:
Serra Chapel, the last surviving church where Father Junipero Serra performed Mass.
The Great Stone Church, completed in 1806, was once the most magnificent chapel on the West Coast. In 1812, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake destroyed the church, killing 42 parishioners. Some believe that the ghost of Magdalena, a girl killed in the rubble, still haunts the ruins.
The Central Courtyard and Gardens, home to colorful poppies, fragrant blooms, and a bubbling Moorish fountain filled with koi.

We are a 4th grade class of extraordinary students in Goleta, CA! Each student did a report of an assigned mission then built it on Minecraft PE using our class iPads. The final stage was a screencast tour.
Everything you see was our first time, e.g. screencasting, mission projects using minecraft, video editing, etc. I apologize for some of the lag you see as it was my first time using the programs. I also apologize for the background water noise. We recorded near the fish tank!
We used Reflector to mirror on my Macbook, Camtasia for screencasting, and Minecraft PE to create our missions.

The Spanish missions in California comprise a series of religious and military outposts established by Spanish Catholics of the Franciscan Order between 1769 and 1823 to spread the Christian faith among the local Native Americans. The missions represented the first major effort by Europeans to colonize the Pacific Coast region, and gave Spain a valuable toehold in the frontier land. The settlers introduced European livestock, fruits, vegetables, cattle, horses and ranching into the California region; however, the Spanish occupation of California also brought with it serious negative consequences to the Native American populations with whom the missionaries came in contact. The government of Mexico shut down the missions in the 1830s. In the end, the mission had mixed results in its objective to convert, educate, and "civilize" the indigenous population and transforming the natives into Spanish colonial citizens. Today, the missions are among the state's oldest structures and the most-visited historic monuments.

California (pronounced 
i/kælɨˈfɔrnjə/) is a state located on the West Coast of the United States. It is by far the most populous U.S. state, and the third most extensive (after Alaska and Texas). It is home to the nation's second- and sixth-largest census statistical areas (Los Angeles Metropolitan Area and San Francisco Bay Area), and eight of the nation's fifty most populated cities (Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Fresno, Sacramento, Long Beach and Oakland). The capital city is Sacramento.
California's diverse geography ranges from the Pacific Coast in the west, to the Sierra Nevada mountains in the east – from the Redwood–Douglas-fir forests of the northwest, to the Mojave Desert areas in the southeast. The center of the state is dominated by Central Valley, a major agricultural area. California contains both the highest and lowest points in the contiguous United States (Mount Whitney and Death Valley), and has the third-longest coastline of all states (after Alaska and Florida). Earthquakes are a common occurrence due to the state's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire: about 37,000 are recorded annually.

Spanish Heritage in the United States: California. The first European to explore the California coast was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Landing on September 28, 1542, on the shores of San Diego Bay, he claimed California for Spain. He also landed on San Miguel, one of the Channel Islands, and continued as far as Pt. Reyes. After his death the crew continued exploring as far north as Oregon. In 1602, 60 years after Cabrillo, the Spaniard Sebastián Vizcaíno explored California's coastline from San Diego to Monterey Bay. He named San Diego Bay and held the first Christian church service recorded in California on the shores of San Diego Bay. He also provided detailed charts of the coastal waters of Monterrey, which were used for nearly 200 years. Spanish missionaries had been establishing missions in present-day Baja California since 1697. The first permanent European settlement in present-day California ("Alta California") was the Mission San Diego de Alcala, established in 1769 by Father Junipero Serra. Eventually 21 missions were established along the California coast, linked by the mission trail El Camino Real. The Spanish treated Baja California and Alta California as a single administrative unit, part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, with Monterey as its capital. The missions of California were Spanish settlements, initiated by Spanish King Charles III and built between 1769 and 1823. The Spanish had already claimed this land over 200 years earlier, but didn't start settling it until Russia started a plan to settle the area. The missions were a way of laying claim the area to Spain. Missions were chosen as the first settlements as a way of creating a unified system of commerce for the whole area in advance of the founding of towns and cities. The Spanish decided to create farms, each located 1 day's journey away from the next. This would ensure a contiguous trade route along the coast (they were built near the coast to have easy access to future sea ports).

We are a 4th grade class of extraordinary students in Goleta, CA! Each student did a report of an assigned mission then built it on Minecraft PE using our class iPads. The final stage was a screencast tour. Everything you see was our first time, e.g. screencasting, mission projects using minecraft, video editing, etc. I apologize for some of the lag you see as it was my first time using the programs. I also apologize for the background water noise. We recorded near the fish tank! We used Reflector to mirror on my Macbook, Camtasia for screencasting, and Minecraft PE to create our missions. Spanish Heritage in the United States: California. The first European to explore the California coast was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Landing on September 28, 1542, on the shores of San Diego Bay, he claimed California for Spain. He also landed on San Miguel, one of the Channel Islands, and continued as far as Pt. Reyes. After his death the crew continued exploring as far north as Oregon. In 1602, 60 years after Cabrillo, the Spaniard Sebastián Vizcaíno explored California's coastline from San Diego to Monterey Bay. He named San Diego Bay and held the first Christian church service recorded in California on the shores of San Diego Bay. In 1818, a band of pirates led by Hipolito Bouchard landed at Dana Point and moved inland, raiding the Mission of its food and wine. Fortunately, residents were warned of the assault and hid most of the Mission's gold and treasure.
Highlights of the mission include:
Serra Chapel, the last surviving church where Father Junipero Serra performed Mass.
The Great Stone Church, completed in 1806, was once the most magnificent chapel on the West Coast. In 1812, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake destroyed the church, killing 42 parishioners. Some believe that the ghost of Magdalena, a girl killed in the rubble, still haunts the ruins.
The Central Courtyard and Gardens, home to colorful poppies, fragrant blooms, and a bubbling Moorish fountain filled with koi.

Spanish Heritage in the United States: California.
The first European to explore the California coast was Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. Landing on September 28, 1542, on the shores of San Diego Bay, he claimed California for Spain. He also landed on San Miguel, one of the Channel Islands, and continued as far as Pt. Reyes. After his death the crew continued exploring as far north as Oregon.
In 1602, 60 years after Cabrillo, the Spaniard Sebastián Vizcaíno explored California's coastline from San Diego to Monterey Bay. He named San Diego Bay and held the first Christian church service recorded in California on the shores of San Diego Bay. He also provided detailed charts of the coastal waters of Monterrey, which were used for nearly 200 years.
Spanish missionaries had been establishing missions in present-day Baja California since 1697. The first permanent European settlement in present-day California ("Alta California") was the Mission San Diego de Alcala, established in 1769 by Father Junipero Serra. Eventually 21 missions were established along the California coast, linked by the mission trail El Camino Real. The Spanish treated Baja California and Alta California as a single administrative unit, part of the Viceroyalty of New Spain, with Monterey as its capital.
The missions of California were Spanish settlements, initiated by Spanish King Charles III and built between 1769 and 1823. The Spanish had already claimed this land over 200 years earlier, but didn't start settling it until Russia started a plan to settle the area. The missions were a way of laying claim the area to Spain.
Missions were chosen as the first settlements as a way of creating a unified system of commerce for the whole area in advance of the founding of towns and cities. The Spanish decided to create farms, each located 1 day's journey away from the next. This would ensure a contiguous trade route along the coast (they were built near the coast to have easy access to future sea ports).

Most public school students in California are required to complete a mission project while in school. From what I have learned, this usually occurs sometime between the 3rd and 4th grade. On the Internet I found a large number of these projects in video form, and would like to share a few of them with you. [play video]. As you can see, the same generic talking points seem to keep coming up. The Indians lived a simple life. They didn't farm anything. The Spanish came to convert them to Catholicism. Indians died from European diseases. While there is some truth to this, it completely negates Nican Tlaca culture and achievements, and glosses over the true horror that the Spaniards wrought with their Missionization system. The missions were not some idyllic setting of pastoral peace, which writers like Helen Hunt Jackson have mythologized, but were more akin to concentration/work camps where our ancestors were literally worked to death for the benefit of Spanish colonists and priests. What approach would children learning about the concentration camps during the Jewish holocaust be given? Would boys and girls dress up like little Jews and video record themselves running around the site? Would they make a camp out of legos and then share it with the class? Would those who got sick and died in the camps be just a tragic accident or the victims of a calculated genocide? I think we all know the answer to that.
Before discussing the tragic history of the Spanish mission system in California, let us take a minute to remember what was here before the European invasion began. According to various sources, there is archeological evidence of a Nican Tlaca presence in California dating back at least 13,000 years, but it is important to remember that many of the earlier sites are now below sea level, due to the rising waters of the Pacific Ocean (Fagan, 22). At the time of European contact, there were 6 major language families spoken in California: Hokan, Penutian, Yukian, Uto-Aztecan, Athapascan, and Algic. Within these larger language families were a variety of smaller, distinct cultures that included various peoples with defined/understood hunting grounds and settlements such as the Tongva, the Chumash, and the Yokuts. However, this diversity should not be interpreted as our ancestors existing in isolated bubbles with no contact amongst each other, as a past visit to the old Hohokam settlement of Pueblo Grande near Phoenix, AZ, showed me. At that site's museum there is a wall map showing the huge trade routes that our people used and which connected our ancestors from one end of Anahuac to the other. Traceable items such as feathers, shells, and obsidian attest to this vigorous and vibrant trade.

Located an hour south of Los Angeles in Orange County, San Juan Capistrano is a historic walking town filled with great restaurants, and shops. Great weather on this day.

Every year on St. Joseph's Day, March 19, the Mission celebrates the return of the swallows from Goya, Argentina. Though they no longer nest here, you can find the swallows, along with other native birds at Trabuco Creek a mile away.

Serra Chapel is the last surviving church where Father Junipero Serra performed Mass. Junipero Serra lived between 1713 and 1784.
Here, you can light a candle and quietly tour this gorgeous Catholic church, which, built in 1777, is the oldest California building still in use. Its hand-carved wood and gold leaf retablo is more than 400 years old.
The Great Stone Church, completed in 1806, was considered the most magnificent chapel on the West Coast.
Tragically, in 1812, a 7.5 magnitude earthquake destroyed the church, killing 42 parishioners. Some believe this Mission San Juan Capistrano church is still home to a ghost named Magdalena, who was killed in the rubble.
Dubbed the "American Acropolis," the Great Stone Church is one of the Mission's most popular sights. Four bells from the wreckage were saved, and rehung in the campanario. The newly built Mission San Juan Capistrano basilica next door was modeled after The Great Stone Church.
After founding the Mission, Father Serra shared his faith and knowledge with the native Acjachemen Indians, who were called Juaneño.
Approximately 1,500 Indians lived at the Mission, learning new skills like ranching, woodworking and farming.
La Pozolera was the Mission's outdoor kitchen, where more than 1,000 people were fed at a time. Meals included fresh bread, beef, potatoes and corn.
In the Mission gardens, residents grew fruit, vegetables, herbs and olives. In 1779, California's first vineyard of Criolla grapes was planted.
Many experts believe this is where California's wine industry began. Grapes were crushed by foot in vats, and the Mission produced its first sacramental wines in 1783.
Water was brought to the Mission from a series of aqueducts lined with stone or brick. You can still view many of these zanjas (zan-has) on the Mission grounds. At the Mission Industrial Center, you'll find vats where the Juanenos made soap and candles from animal fat.
The fleet was led by Hipolito Bouchard, who was searching for the Mission's gold. Fortunately, residents were warned of the assault and hid most of the treasure. Bouchard also led attacks on Monterey and Santa Barbara.
Falling into ruin around 1910, the Mission was restored by Father John O'Sullivan, who worked until his death in 1933. He is buried outside Serra Chapel in the Mission Cemetery.
One of my favorite areas of the Mission is the Central Courtyard. This was the center of activity here at the Mission and today is home to special concerts and events.
The courtyard is a great place to relax beside a bubbling Moorish fountain filled with koi, or admire the colorful poppies and fragrant flowers around the garden.

Dream Center LA California Youth Missions Trip Recap Video 2013 (Extended Version)
This is a video recap of our youth ministry (Revolution) missions trip of us going to the Dreamcenter. This is the first missions trip Inspire church (previously hopechapelwestohau or HCWO) has ever did in terms of sending youth. We have sent people to nepal, thailand, uganda, and so much more places. About 10 chaperones and 15 teenagers got to go on this trip ministering to people, serving food, and so much more to help those who are financially challenged and anyone who needed Jesus. This trip impacted many of us as we traveled through long beach, Skid row and even visited the Angelus Temple where our church was founded from. •Administration: Paper cutting, data entry, and printing
•Phone Calling team- calling students once a month to invite, remind, follow up on attendance. A script will be provided.
•Small Group leading- assigned to a small group of students to care for. Monthly training will be provided.
•Service Production- Sound system, lights, stagehands, power point, ushers, video, producer, front row director
•Chaperone- Monitoring students checking in at front door and ensuring safety of students at each event
•Concierge- Checking in regular students and hosting new students
•Set up/Take Down- Assisting with the furniture set up and reset in preparation for youth services.
•Marketing- passing out flyers, cutting flyers, filling out graphic requests, creating and executing marketing strategies, manning info tables, social media
•Events Planning- Planning parties, camps, outings, Remix, competitions, fun activities
•Fundraising- Cooking, ordering, accounting, planning
•Creative Arts- Dance, music, drama
•Van driving- Transporting students from various locations to youth services. *Must have a clean drivers abstract
