Cafayate (Spanish pronunciation: [kafaˈʒate]) is a town located at the central zone of the Valles Calchaquíes in the province of Salta, Argentina. It sits 1,683 metres (5,522 ft) above mean sea level, at a distance of 189 kilometres (117 mi) from Salta City and 1,329 kilometres (826 mi) from Buenos Aires. It has about 12,000 inhabitants (2001 census [INDEC]).
The town is an important tourist centre for exploring the Calchaquíes valleys, and because of the quality and originality of the wines produced in the area. The largest golf course in South America, at 240 acres (0.97 km2), is currently being developed just outside the city center at La Estancia de Cafayate. The town was founded in 1840 by Manuel Fernando de Aramburu, at the site of a mission. In 1863 the Cafayate Department was created, of which Cafayate is the capital.
The Cafayates were a tribe of the Diaguita-Calchaquí group, which, together with the related Tolombón, inhabited the Valles Calchaquíes prior to the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadores. Their language was known as Cacán. Like other Diaguita tribes, they had recently fallen under the influence of the Incas, after a prolonged resistance. They later mounted a fierce resistance to the Spaniards.
Salta is a city located in the Lerma Valley, at 1,152 metres (3780 feet) above sea level in the northwest part of Argentina. It is also the name for the capital city of Salta Province. Along with its metropolitan area, it has a population of 619,000 inhabitants, which makes it the second most populated city in the northwest of the country.
It is situated in the Lerma Valley, 1,152 metres (3780 feet) above sea level, at the foothills of the Andes mountains.
The weather is warm and dry, with annual averages of 756 mm of rainfall and an average temperature of 16.4 °C (20.4 °C in summer, 10.8 °C in winter). January and February are the months with greatest rainfall. During the spring, Salta is occasionally plagued by severe, week-long dust storms.
Nicknamed Salta la Linda ("Salta the beautiful"), it has become a major tourist destination due to its old, colonial architecture, tourism friendliness, excellent weather and natural scenery of the valleys westward. Attractions in the city proper include the 18th century Cabildo, the neo-classical style Cathedral, and the 9 de julio central square along with San Bernardo hill and its surroundings. The city's museums exhibit a wide range of artifacts and art work from the native civilizations that flourished in the area (Salta is located in the southernmost region of what was the Inca empire, belonging to the Collasuyu, one of the four areas the empire was divided until the Spanish conquest), as well as from the 16th century Spanish conquest and the colonial and post-colonial periods. Salta is also the starting point of the "Train to the Clouds" (Tren a las nubes), and on the way to red-soiled Cafayate, as well as to other nearby tourist destinations.

After our misadventure of a journey to Cachi we were hopeful for a smoother tour when we booked another day trip from Salta to Cafayate. Fortunately for us, things went really well this time. We ended up visiting some incredible national parks and visiting a vineyard for a wine tour. Afterwards we ate empanadas for lunch and tried wine ice cream for the first time (Malbec) before heading back. Visiting Cafayate, Argentina Travel Video Transcript: So good morning from somewhere in the province of Salta. Today we're doing another day trip. So we left the city behind and we're driving towards a place called Cafayate. Right now we're just making a little pit stop. A little breakfast stop. So we just ate some alfajores, had some coffee. Oh, they were so good. So good. Double layer alfajores....

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com The valley is home to some of the world's highest vineyards, producing Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the local white speciality, Torrents. Cafayate is a popular tourist destination and easily reached from Salta. An adorable little town with many restaurants, shops and tour operators located around the main square that unfortunately was just coming to life when we left. In hindsight is 20/20, I would have scheduled one more day in Cafayate to enjoy its ambiance.
