Guy Chambers is a multi Ivor Novello and BRIT award-winning songwriter and producer with credits ranging from Rufus Wainwright to Kylie Minogue. He is perhaps best known, though, for his work with British singer Robbie Williams, penning 'Angels' for the former Take That vocalist.
We sit down with Chambers and producer/engineer Richard Flack (Joe Strummer, Rudimental, Paloma Faith) in Guy’s beautifully equipped Sleeper Sounds studio in West London to discuss studio design, the benefit of playing real over virtual instruments and an intriguing remedy for writer’s block.
In february/march 2011 I've produced a Dressage GP Musical Freestyle together with Robbie Williams and Guy Chambers. The arrangement is written by me and the music is being played by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Clark Rundell. Guy Chambers played the piano and Robbie Williams provided the vocal recordings. Sjoerd Rutten played the drums and I played the Guitars and Bass Guitar. This kur I've produced for Richard Davison and Artemis for the Olympic Games 2012.

Guy Chambers
Guy Antony Chambers (born January 12, 1963 in Hammersmith, London) is an English songwriter, musician and record producer, best known for his work with Robbie Williams, although he written songs with other artists including Rufus Wainwright, Katy B, Marlon Roudette, Miles Kane, Mark Ronson, John Newman, Kylie Minogue, Example, The Wanted, James Blunt, Katie Melua, Tina Turner and many others. He has been a part of 52 Gold/Platinum certified albums (UK and US) including 15 (UK) number 1 albums, and 22 (UK) Top 10 singles including 18 (UK) number 1 singles.
Biography
Chambers wrote music from an early age and had performed in London when he was just 11. When he was 15, Chambers composed and performed in a rock opera for his school in Liverpool. From 18, he studied composition and piano at the Guildhall School of Music, London, winning the composition prize in 1985. While at the Guildhall, Chambers started to record his own songs and performed with a band called 'The Burmoe Brothers' releasing their first single, featuring Marc Almond "Skin" on Some Bizarre Records in 1984. After graduating, he toured as a keyboard player with, among others, Julian Cope and The Waterboys before joining World Party in 1986. He co-wrote, with Karl Wallinger, on the band's most successful album: Bang!. He appeared on The Mission's Carved in Sand, providing the orchestral arrangement and keyboards for the song "Grapes of Wrath" and was producer for the short-lived group Stress with their eponymous debut album.

Robbie Williams
Robert Peter "Robbie" Williams (born 13 February 1974) is an English singer, songwriter, and actor. He was a member of the pop group Take That from 1990 to 1995 and again from 2009 to 2012. He has also had commercial success as a solo artist.
Williams rose to fame in the band's first run in the early-to-mid-1990s. After many disagreements with the management and group members, Williams left the group in 1995 to launch a hugely successful solo career, which saw his first seven albums each reach number one in the UK. Williams also released seven number-one singles and found similar success across Europe. On 15 July 2010, it was announced he had rejoined Take That. The group's subsequent album became the second fastest-selling album in UK chart history and the fastest-selling record of the century at the time.Gary Barlow has since confirmed that Williams had left the band for a second time, although the departure was amicable and that Williams was welcome to rejoin the band in the future.

We sit down with Chambers and producer/engineer Richard Flack (Joe Strummer, Rudimental, Paloma Faith) in Guy’s beautifully equipped Sleeper Sounds studio in West London to discuss studio design, the benefit of playing real over virtual instruments and an intriguing remedy for writer’s block.

The band itself is extraordinary (proof of Miles Davis's masterful casting skills, if not of God's existence), listing John Coltrane and Julian "Cannonball" Adderley on saxophones, Bill Evans (or, on "Freddie Freeloader," Wynton Kelly) on piano, and the crack rhythm unit of Paul Chambers on bass and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Coltrane's astringency on tenor is counterpoised to Adderley's funky self on alto, with Davis moderating between them as Bill Evans conjures up a still lake of sound on which they walk. Meanwhile, the rhythm partnership of Cobb and Chambers is prepared to click off time until eternity. It was the key recording of what became modal jazz, a music free of the fixed harmonies and forms of pop songs. Paul Chambers had began building a home out of two shipping containers as a project, but when his wife got tired of suburbia and put their four-bedroom home on the market, his project became the couple’s full-time home (Paul’s ebook: www.buildshippingcontainerhouse.com)
Paul and Sarah Chambers were living in rural Scotland when Paul received a job offer in Australia. They packed their belongings and moved to a large home with a pool in an Australian suburb. After only a few months, they began to tire of spending so much of their income on their home. They also felt they’d lost touch with nature and a more active lifestyle (“there weren’t even any trails for walking”, explains Sarah).
So they sold their home and moved with Paul’s “project”: two shipping containers he’d been transforming into a kitchen/bathroom + bedroom/living room. They found someone willing to let them park their new home on their rural property in exchange for making improvements to the land.
When the couple first moved onto the property, the home was a very simple shelter and over the following three years, they built the containers into a proper home.
Their home is completely off the electric and water grids. When they first moved to the bush they used a 3kw Honda generator, but they’ve since installed 2Kw of photovoltaic panels and a bank of batteries and phased out the generator. They have enough energy to power their home with all its conventional appliances, including a standard fridge/freezer. For heating, they rely on firewood (collected from fallen trees on the property; they have “not cut down a single tree”). For air conditioning, they use fans and AC “during really hot days”.
In the beginning they had to rely on water deliveries, but Paul has since installed an extensive rainwater capture setup- both on the roof and gutters beneath the home- which provides for all their water needs: 65 square metres of rain water collection in 10,000 liters of storage. The indoor bathroom includes a shower, but Paul built an outdoor, open air bathtub which they heat with solar in the summertime.
They’ve also created an extensive vegetable garden inside a netted garden cage (after the animals and hot sun destroyed their first attempts). For eggs, they have two hen houses.
Paul has published an ebook explaining how he built the home including a step-by-step guide: buying and moving shipping containers, a wiring diagram and schematics, installing solar panels and a breakdown of costs.

Guy Chambers is a multi Ivor Novello and BRIT award-winning songwriter and producer with credits ranging from Rufus Wainwright to Kylie Minogue. He is perhaps best known, though, for his work with British singer Robbie Williams, penning 'Angels' for the former Take That vocalist. The arrangement is written by me and the music is being played by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Clark Rundell. Guy Chambers played the piano and Robbie Williams provided the vocal recordings. Sjoerd Rutten played the drums and I played the Guitars and Bass Guitar. This kur I've produced for Richard Davison and Artemis for the Olympic Games 2012.

The Saturday Night Fever album shot them to global superstardom and every radio station played a song written, produced or sung by The Bee Gees. The saturation of their music and their iconic 'medallion man' image would ultimately elbow them out of fashion, even make them figures of fun...
But you can't keep a good band down and in the 80s they became writing guns-for-hire to stars such as Kenny & Dolly, Barbra Streisand and Diana Ross. 1987 saw the band come back yet again and hit the top of the charts. The deaths of Maurice and then Robin brought the Bee Gees' reign to an end, but Barry and their music live on.
