The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards marked their return to Scotland with two homecoming parades. This one in Glasgow, followed by one in Edinburgh on 4 April.
Here the parade is accompanied by the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland.
The salute was taken by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Sadie Docherty, and the parade was followed by a reception in the City Chambers. The regiment will return to Fallingbostel in Germany, but will move to RAF Leuchars in 2015 as a Light Cavalry Regiment.

Robin McLaurin Williams (born July 21, 1951) is an American actor and comedian. Rising to fame with his role as the alien Mork in the TV series Mork & Mindy, and later stand-up comedy work, Williams has performed in many feature films since 1980. He won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting. He has also won two Emmy Awards, four Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild Awards and five Grammy Awards.
Williams was born in Chicago, Illinois. His mother, Laura McLaurin (née Smith, 1922–2001), was a former model from New Orleans, Louisiana. His father, Robert Fitzgerald Williams (September 10, 1906 – October 18, 1987), was a senior executive at Ford Motor Company in charge of the Midwest region. His maternal great-great-grandfather was senator and Mississippi governor Anselm J. McLaurin. Williams is of English, Welsh, Irish, and French ancestry. He was raised in the Episcopal Church (his mother practiced Christian Science). He grew up in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, where he was a student at the Detroit Country Day School, and later moved to Woodacre, Marin County, California, where he attended the public Redwood High School. Williams studied at Claremont McKenna College (then called Claremont Men's College) for four years. He has two half-brothers: Todd (who died August 14, 2007) and McLaurin.

The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards marked their return to Scotland with two homecoming parades. This one in Glasgow, followed by one in Edinburgh on 4 April. Here the parade is accompanied by the Pipes and Drums of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and the Band of The Royal Regiment of Scotland. The salute was taken by the Lord Provost of Glasgow, Sadie Docherty, and the parade was followed by a reception in the City Chambers. The regiment will return to Fallingbostel in Germany, but will move to RAF Leuchars in 2015 as a Light Cavalry Regiment. The World Famous Royal Scots Dragoon Guards have been at the forefront of Pipe music since first achieving world wide fame in 1972 when their haunting version of "Amazing Grace" rocketed to the top of the charts all around the world.The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are Scotland`s senior regiment and only regular cavalry regiment. The Regiment was formed in 1971 from the amalgamation of the 3rd Carabiniers ( whom were themselves the result of the amalgamation of the 6th Dragoon Guards the Carabiniers and the 3rd the Prince of Wales Dragoon Guards in 1922) and The Royal Scots Greys (2nd Dragoons).
The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards are Scotland’s most senior and only regular cavalry regiment, formed in 1678. The Regiment has recently re-rolled to Light Cavalry after 75 years in tanks and has also moved from Germany to Fife. The Regiment is currently undergoing training to be at readiness as the Light Cavalry Regiment of choice.
The new role of Light Cavalry is at the forefront of the British Army’s organisation, primarily as a mounted combat unit, but also working alongside other armies around the world. The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards form the main armoured force for the 7th Armoured Brigade, The Famous Desert Rats.

SCOTS GUARDS TO PARADE IN GLASGOW
Around 250 soldiers will take part in a homecoming parade in Glasgow after a six month tour of duty in Afghanistan.
The 1st Battalion Scots Guards will march from Holland Street at 11am to George Square taking in West Regent Street, Pitt Street and West George Street.
The Lord Provost will take the Salute on the dais, with the Regimental Lieutenant Colonel, Brigadier Harry Nickerson in George Square.
Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Rob Howieson said, "It is a great honour to march through the streets of Glasgow. The Guardsmen are very proud of their work and they are humbled to be able to parade in front of their friends, families and the local community.
"The battalion has had a challenging six months in Afghanistan and the parade will recognise its achievement."
The troops, currently stationed in Catterick, North Yorkshire, were deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Herrick 17 between October 2012 and April this year.
The battalion spent the duration of their tour in Helmand Province, where they were deployed to the Upper Gereshk Valley.

The Scots Language Centre provides information about and encourages the use of Scots. Scots is the language in which Burns wrote most of his work. It is the medium for some of the country's best loved poems and songs and is still spoken today by people throughout the Lowlands and Northern Isles. Scots like Gaelic is recognised by the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages. Scots is one of our great cultural treasures, it has been with us for hundreds of years and we encounter it everyday in names like Kirk Brae, Trongate and Holyrood.
Scots is sometimes known by local names. People in the North East often call it Doric while in Dundee it's known as Dundonian and in Shetland it is usually referred to as Shetland dialect. In its literary form it can be called Lallans -- Hugh Macdiarmid is the best known of the Lallans poets. His epic poem, A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle is written in Scots. Older generations usually called the language Scotch or 'braid Scots'.
In this interview with Dr Dauvit Horsbroch of the Scots Language Centre, First Minister, Alex Salmond, talks about his encounters with the language as a boy growing up in Linlithgow and then later in the North East where his constituency, Gordon, is located. The First Minster describes his use of Scots words and phrases in parliamentary debates and explains why he has a particular fondness for the expressive qualities of the language. The interview also looks at the Scots question in the 2011 census and considers the future health and status of the language. Mr Salmond reveals his great admiration for the work of Robert Burns and recites an example of the bard's verse. The whole interview is available to watch online.

I conducted this interview with Kevin Patterson of Tweedswood Fishing in June of 2007. To this day I don't think I've ever heard a cooler Scottish accent. Kevin at that time was a mason, and a master fly fisherman - and a heck of a nice guy. We talked later about the movie Braveheart, and he took me down to Melrose Abby after lunch. Old Scots Tunes (1742) Francesco Barsanti Francesco Barsanti is often described as ‘undoubtedly the finest instrumental composer ever to have resided in Scotland.’ An Italian, Barsanti was amongst the first composers in Scotland to compose in the ‘Drawing Room’ style, a compositional style that harmonises Scottish tunes, he was also amongst the first to include violoncello in his instrumentation. Many scholars on Scottish music acknowledge Barsanti’s collection of Scots tunes as very personal and sensitive to the simple nature of Scottish tunes. Francesco Barsanti is often described as ‘undoubtedly the finest instrumental composer ever to have resided in Scotland.’ An Italian, Barsanti was amongst the first composers in Scotland to compose in the ‘Drawing Room’ style, a compositional style that harmonises Scottish tunes, he was also amongst the first to include violoncello in his instrumentation. Many scholars on Scottish music acknowledge Barsanti’s collection of Scots tunes as very personal and sensitive to the simple nature of Scottish tunes. Although limited to short two part tunes, rather than a tune with variations, Barsanti’s arrangements are amongst the most virtuosic of works published in this style. The work includes twenty-eight tunes printed on two staves without words, introductions or codas. Twenty-one of these pieces come from a collection of Scottish Songs entitled Orpheus Caledonius: or a Collection of the Best Scotch Songs, a collection published by Scotsman William Thomson in London in 1725, while others came from another publication by James Oswald A Collection of Curious Scots Tunes. Some were also tunes that had never been published before. In the preface, Barsanti writes that he found in Scottish Tunes ‘an Elegance and Variety of Harmony equal to the compositions of most celebrated Masters of those Times,’ and it is indeed clear the Barsanti follows in this tradition. Listen out for delicate Italian style ornamentation and harmonies that enhance the melody, as well as the cello playing the slow air, another tradition of the period.

Ó Mocháin's film argues for a more nuanced perspective on Ulster Scots by excavating an exciting and radical history -- the history of 1798 in the north, and the flowering of intellectual development associated with the enlightenment and the French and American revolutions.
At the core of this film is respect for the choices that people make in terms of their identity, an issue that is at the heart of modern day Irish language activism. One of the subjects of the film, musician and ethnomusicologist Gordon Ramsey, articulates this position in an interview where he says: "Ulster Scots identity can be viewed as an alternative to Irishness, but it can also be viewed as a particular way of being Irish, and for some Loyalists, Ulster Scots identity offers a way to be Irish on their own terms without having to accept any of the baggage of Nationalism that has sometimes been associated with Irishness"
Ulster Scots was, controversially, given language status, by the European Bureau of Lesser Used Languages, a respected body that operates to support and promote lesser used languages throughout Europe. They place Ulster Scots, and Irish, and dozens of other languages on a register of threatened voices. Ulster Scots was, again somewhat controversially, formally recognised as deserving of special support within the Belfast Agreement in 1998. This Agreement was widely endorsed in an All Ireland referendum in the summer of 1998.
The film, Cultúr Ceilte, follows narrator, Seimí MacAindreasa, a native Irish speaker from Belfast, on a journey through modern day Ulster Scots. Some of the people he meets are long standing activists, and have been preserving and promoting the language for years -- recording older members of their community, translating the bible, encouraging people to take an interest in traditional music. Others are new to the concept, and are slowly working through their relationship to the language and culture.
MacAindreasa talks to historians and academics about James Orr, one of the 'weaver poets', as John Hewitt described them -- working class intellectuals who wrote in Scots and who were often of a radical nature. Orr was a United Irishman, a section leader under the command of Henry Joy McCracken, and was forced into a period of exile after the Battle of Antrim in 1798. His work is viewed as being on a par with that master of Scots verse, Robbie Burns.
MacAindreasa also goes on to meet the modern day Orr -- James Fenton, a retired schoolmaster and the author of 'The Hamely Tongue' - a compilation of Ulster Scots words and phrases gathered over thirty years. This is widely viewed as an exemplary piece of work, recording the core aspects of a language in rapid decline. James also writes poetry in his mother tongue, and three of these are featured throughout the programme.
Director, Ó Mocháin's perspective is that people have the right to define themselves in a manner of their own choosing, and should be supported in those choices. Ulster Scots may be a language in decline, but to those who express an interest in multi-culturalism, and who support the preservation of minority cultures, he believes that this should act as a motivating factor to ensure that Ulster Scots is properly supported and nurtured. The first act in this supporting and nurturing has to be a greater understanding and awareness of the multi-faceted nature of modern Ulster Scots.

MacAindreasa talks to historians and academics about James Orr, one of the 'weaver poets', as John Hewitt described them -- working class intellectuals who wrote in Scots and who were often of a radical nature. Orr was a United Irishman, a section leader under the command of Henry Joy McCracken, and was forced into a period of exile after the Battle of Antrim in 1798. His work is viewed as being on a par with that master of Scots verse, Robbie Burns.
MacAindreasa also goes on to meet the modern day Orr -- James Fenton, a retired schoolmaster and the author of 'The Hamely Tongue' - a compilation of Ulster Scots words and phrases gathered over thirty years. This is widely viewed as an exemplary piece of work, recording the core aspects of a language in rapid decline. James also writes poetry in his mother tongue, and three of these are featured throughout the programme.
Director, Ó Mocháin's perspective is that people have the right to define themselves in a manner of their own choosing, and should be supported in those choices. Ulster Scots may be a language in decline, but to those who express an interest in multi-culturalism, and who support the preservation of minority cultures, he believes that this should act as a motivating factor to ensure that Ulster Scots is properly supported and nurtured. The first act in this supporting and nurturing has to be a greater understanding and awareness of the multi-faceted nature of modern Ulster Scots.

Mary, Queen of Scots (8 December 1542 -- 8 February 1587), also known as Mary Stuart[3] or Mary I of Scotland, was queen regnant of Scotland from 14 December 1542 to 24 July 1567 and queen consort of France from 10 July 1559 to 5 December 1560.
Mary, the only surviving legitimate child of King James V of Scotland, was 6 days old when her father died and she succeeded to the throne. She spent most of her childhood in France while Scotland was ruled by regents, and in 1558, she married the Dauphin, Francis. He ascended the French throne as King Francis II in 1559, and Mary briefly became queen consort of France, until his death on 5 December 1560. Widowed, Mary returned to Scotland, arriving in Leith on 19 August 1561. Four years later, she married her first cousin, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, but their union was unhappy. In February 1567, his residence was destroyed by an explosion, and Darnley was found murdered in the garden.
James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, was generally believed to have orchestrated Darnley's death, but he was acquitted of the charge in April 1567, and the following month he married Mary. Following an uprising against the couple, Mary was imprisoned in Loch Leven Castle. On 24 July 1567, she was forced to abdicate in favour of James, her one-year-old son by Darnley. After an unsuccessful attempt to regain the throne, she fled southwards seeking the protection of her first cousin once removed, Queen Elizabeth I of England. Mary had previously claimed Elizabeth's throne as her own and was considered the legitimate sovereign of England by many English Catholics, including participants in a rebellion known as the Rising of the North. Perceiving her as a threat, Elizabeth had her confined in a number of castles and manor houses in the interior of England. After eighteen and a half years in custody, Mary was found guilty of plotting to assassinate Elizabeth, and was subsequently executed.

Mary was born on 8 December 1542 at Linlithgow Palace, Linlithgow, Scotland, to James V, King of Scots, and his French second wife, Mary of Guise. She was said to have been born prematurely and was the only legitimate child of James to survive him.[5] She was the great-niece of King Henry VIII of England, as her paternal grandmother, Margaret Tudor, was Henry VIII's sister. On 14 December, six days after her birth, she became Queen of Scots when her father died, perhaps from the effects of a nervous collapse following the Battle of Solway Moss,[6] or from drinking contaminated water while on campaign.[7]
A popular legend, first recorded by John Knox, states that James, hearing on his deathbed that his wife had given birth to a daughter, ruefully exclaimed, "It came with a lass, it will pass with a lass!"[8] His House of Stewart had gained the throne of Scotland by the marriage of Marjorie Bruce, daughter of Robert the Bruce, to Walter Stewart, 6th High Steward of Scotland. The Crown had come to his family through a woman, and would be lost from his family through a woman. This legendary statement came true much later—not through Mary, whose son by one of her Stewart cousins became king, but through his descendant Anne, Queen of Great Britain.[9]
Mary was baptised at the nearby Church of St Michael shortly after she was born.[10] Rumours spread that she was weak and frail,[11] but an English diplomat, Ralph Sadler, saw the infant at Linlithgow Palace in March 1543, unwrapped by her nurse, and wrote, "it is as goodly a child as I have seen of her age, and as like to live."[12]
As Mary was an infant when she inherited the throne, Scotland was ruled by regents until she became an adult. From the outset, there were two different claims to the Regency: one from Catholic Cardinal Beaton, and the other from the Protestant Earl of Arran, who was next in line to the throne. Beaton's claim was based on a version of the late king's will that his opponents dismissed as a forgery.[13] Arran, with the support of his friends and relations, became the regent until 1554 when Mary's mother managed to remove and succeed him.
