Plot: A young priest is sent by his bishop deep into the seacoast wilds of British Columbia to a parish of Kwakiutl Native Americans called Kingcome. The Tsawataineuk live in an inlet village and take their sustenance from the sea and from the forest. The bishop has not told him this, but the priest has only two years left to live. Among these vanishing Indians, Mark Brian learns enough of the meaning of life not to fear death. Through is faith and humanity, he becomes part of the village, of the Indians themselves, and witness to their rituals and beliefs and the gradual destruction of a culture. Then, on a cold winter evening, when he hears the owl in the forest call his name, he understands what is going to happen.

Plot: Jim Wallace, a young engineer, is engaged by Hammond, manager of an estate in the Northwest, to build flumes for a logging camp, but Donovan, the superintendent, dislikes him and places numerous obstacles in his way. Virginia Coulson, owner of the estate, and her maid Dot arrive, and when Hammond proposes to Virginia, she refuses his declaration in favor of Jim. Later, when Donovan is found murdered, suspicion points to Jim, who is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. Hammond gets evidence on the murderer, Goofus, a half wit, and plans to use it to force Virginia to marry him; Goofus wounds Hammond and, seeing he has not killed him, starts a forest fire. Jim, who has escaped from prison with the aid of his friend, Buddy, rescues Virginia from the burning lodge; Goofus confesses to the murder, and Jim is freed.

In Three Hours (1913)

Plot: Bessie Ames, daughter of the ranch owner, is beloved by Spencer, the foreman, and Jim Wallace, one of her father's cowboys. She favors Jim, but her father is set on her marrying the foreman, until Jim brings proof of the other's dishonesty. Spencer is dismissed and Jim gets the position and the girl of his choice. But, in revenge, Spencer lures Jim to a trysting place of the lovers, ties him to a tree and sets a keg of powder at his feet, placing a lighted candle in it timed to go off in three hours. He then returns to the ranch and meets Bessie; he insolently tells her what he has done. She manages to elude him and dashes away alone on horseback. Spencer goes after her, however, and overtaking her before she has gone far, forces her to return. They reach the house just as the time limit expired. He points triumphantly at the clock and goes off, while Bess falls fainting to the floor. On the return of her father he is told the terrible tale. Gathering his men together, they set off headed by Bessie and reach the fatal spot, only to find that by a direct act of providence, Jim has been saved.
