The Greeks and the Portuguese given difficulties in their economies would oppose pro-EU comments made by former leader of the Scottish National Party (SNP) and ex-First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond, the former SNP deputy leader, Jim Sillars, told Sputnik.

EDINBURGH (Sputnik) — Salmond said during a meeting of the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee on Tuesday that if the European Union did not already exist his party would seek to create it, therefore reiterating his support for the campaign on the United Kingdom to stay in the 28-nation bloc.

"[Salmond’s comments] are in line with the current SNP policy which is to be uncritical of the EU. But I doubt if the Greeks and the Portuguese will agree with him considering the hammering their economies and social structures have taken at the hands of Brussels," Sillars told Sputnik.

UK citizens are set to vote on June 23 in a referendum on the country's EU membership, after Prime Minister David Cameron and the leaders of the 27 EU member states reached a deal in February to grant the United Kingdom a special status within the bloc.
