Manchester United's Under-21s made sure of the title with an incredible 3-2 win at Tottenham Hotspur, thanks to
Guillermo Varela's injury-time stunner
Joe Pritchard's equaliser six minutes before the end looked set to put the champagne on ice but
Warren Joyce's side, who led 2-0 through
Donald Love and
Andreas Pereira, provided a finish typical of
United in the dying seconds of an entertaining encounter.
The
Reds started in determined fashion and took the lead in only the fifth minute. A 13-pass move from one end to the other was rewarded when Andreas Pereira rolled
Paddy McNair's ball to
Love and the
Scotland Under-21 international buried a beautiful strike with the inside of his boot from the edge of the box.
Despite Spurs applying some pressure, Varela picked out Andreas Pereira with a fine cross and the makeshift striker smashed a first-time volley with his right foot past
Luke McGee to make it 2-0 with only 16 minutes on the clock.
The hosts were always likely to make life more difficult and captain
Will Miller was not closed down when finding enough space to drill a low shot wide of
Joel Pereira.
Harry Winks was denied a similar strike when Joel Pereira pulled off a fingertip save and, from the corner, Kazaiah
Sterling fired off target.
The second half continued to be the perfect advertisement for Under-21 football as both sides carved out numerous chances. Joel Pereira kept out
Miller's prodded effort after
Josh Onomah nutmegged
Axel Tuanzebe but United hit back and should have made the points safe.
McGee's awful kick went straight to Love but he sent it wide of an open goal from around 25 yards out. The midfielder was outstanding but rued the opportunity to double his account for the season after his earlier strike. Andreas Pereira and Varela then smashed shots off target before Spurs mustered long-range attempts by Winks and
Anton Walkes.
Scott McTominay came off the bench and quickly could have extended the lead when latching onto
Love's inviting first-time cross but McGee blocked and, when the ball still rolled slowly towards the net, Walkes was on hand to clear.
Pereira hit the outside of a post after a strong run on 79 minutes as United again came agonisingly close to wrapping it up.
Instead, Spurs levelled with six minutes left as Pritchard, who scored in the corresponding fixture, tapped in a cross by fellow substitute
Marcus Edwards, after he escaped down the right. It set up a grandstand finish as
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Edwards and Joe Muscatt all might have scored before the closing seconds.
Andreas Pereira's clever free-kick picked out McNair and, when his shot was blocked, Varela followed up to hammer a sublime volley past McGee to spark wild celebrations. It was no more than
Joyce's team deserved and was a fitting way to retain the trophy.
