A castrato (Italian, plural: castrati) is a type of classical male singing voice equivalent to that of a soprano, mezzo-soprano, or contralto. The voice is produced by castration of the singer before puberty, or it occurs in one who, due to an endocrinological condition, never reaches sexual maturity.
Castration before puberty (or in its early stages) prevents a boy's larynx from being transformed by the normal physiological events of puberty. As a result, the vocal range of prepubescence (shared by both sexes) is largely retained, and the voice develops into adulthood in a unique way. Prepubescent castration for this purpose diminished greatly in the late 18th century and was made illegal in Italy in 1870.
As the castrato's body grew, his lack of testosterone meant that his epiphyses (bone-joints) did not harden in the normal manner. Thus the limbs of the castrati often grew unusually long, as did the bones of their ribs. This, combined with intensive training, gave them unrivalled lung-power and breath capacity. Operating through small, child-sized vocal cords, their voices were also extraordinarily flexible, and quite different from the equivalent adult female voice. Their vocal range was higher than that of the uncastrated adult male (see soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, sopranist, countertenor and contralto). Listening to the only surviving recordings of a castrato (see below), one can hear that the lower part of the voice sounds like a "super-high" tenor, with a more falsetto-like upper register above that.

Plot: Set in France around 1760, the Marquise de Merteuil needs a favour from her ex-lover, Vicomte de Valmont. One of the Marquise de Merteuil's ex-lovers, Gercourt, is betrothed to a young, virtuous, woman called Cecile de Volanges. The Marquise would like Valmont to seduce Cecile before her wedding day, thus humiliating Gercourt. Meanwhile, Valmont has a conquest of his own in mind: Madame de Tourvel, a beautiful, married, and God fearing woman. The Marquise doesn't think that Valmont can seduce Mme de Tourvel. She tells him that if he can provide written proof of a sexual encounter with Mme de Tourvel, she will offer him a reward: one last night with her. Valmont, however, will find himself falling in love with Mme de Tourvel, and facing the deadly jealousy of the Marquise de Merteuil. All along, Cecile de Volanges is used as a pawn in this game of sexual conquest and scorned love.

Cavaliere Moreschi singing. Here we can hear more ease his voice and how he can sing mostly in chest voice. That's a thing that today listeners can no t understand. Castrati sang in CHEST VOICE not only head. Bernachi (another castrato) taught Farinelli how to sing 'colorature' in chest voice :D Modern sopranos and countertenors mostly uses just their head voice. The biggest problem I have find is "the mode" and I feel as Tosi said: "Modern singers" I am an ancient one... I do prefere this style so brave and sincere.
Alessandro Moreschi - the last recorded castrato. The Castrati were men who were forcibly castrated at an early age in order to ensure that they would not experience the hormonal changes of puberty that lead to the lowering of the male voice. This meant that as adult men they sang like a modern soprano (they retained their boy soprano voices). After the Catholic Church asked that all nations ban the practice, Pope Leo XIII took the remaining Castrati into the care of the Sistine Chapel Choir to guarantee them a quiet life (at the time they had become the subject of ridicule). Moreschi is the only castrato to be recorded solo. In this recording he is over 50 years old and had lost much of the quality of his voice -- nevertheless the resulting recording is incredibly eerie. Courtes...

There has always been a peculiar fascination with the sound & vocal range of a trained Countertenor. It gives us a insight to how an Italian Castrato might have sounded in Rome's catholic churches and opera houses all those hundreds of years ago ........ contralto mezzo-soprano contralto alto sopranist falsetto

If you listen carefully you'll see the high notes that you feel like the 12 years old boy is singing. This is the most important speciality of castrato voice. But today, somebodies purports that they are castrato... I think they don't know what are they talking about? The biological meaning is Castrato or castrati = Castrated (eunuched before puberty) singer of XVI & XVII Century. Real Castratos stayed in the XVI & XVII Century. Farinelli movie was a good film but ...
Late at night - moonlight shining
From beyond - deadly lightning
You run fast - fall on your knees
And you find the end at least.
And you know he'll open the door
No regrets - no remorse.
And when you see the light
You know that the time is right
To meet the ferryman.
And when you see the light
It shows you the way to find
And meet the ferryman.
Kiss the blade, you think you're dead now
You're alive but you don't know how
The reaper shows the way to go
You're afraid and you scream NO.
It's too late, you've got no choice
Now obey the ferryman's voice.
Now you've reached your destination
All your fears turn into frustration
Time has come to take your last breath
Enter now the kingdom of death.
You don't need your body at all
