This is the first video from the Lead Guitar Quick-Start Series. In this lesson Nate gives an overview of this series and gets you started with some advice for your fretting hand. Blues scale in 5 positions
When I was 15 years old one of my brothers' friends was playing some cool blues riffs on his guitar and I asked him -- how do you do that?
He tore an empty cigarette packet down one side, opened it out and, grabbing a ballpoint pen, he Scrawled down five grid patterns with little circles on them and handed it to me.
Learn those! Was all he said.
At the time I had a feeling like I had just been initiated into the Inner circle of Lead Guitar Players.
Now, nearly 40 years on, I know that that feeling was accurate. My lead guitar playing really took off from that point on!
Since then I have made it part of my life's mission to pass on that initiation!
But you're lucky - Look I've even written out the diagrams neatly for you!
Let's go through them one at a time.
We're learning a system that will enable us to play in any key, but for the sake of keeping things simple to start with we are going to learn all five positions in the key of E.
OK so those are the 5 positions of the Blues scale in E. Learn those really thoroughly and start using them as a warm-up exercise.
If you want to really develop fast as a lead guitarist then check out the Secret Guitar Teacher's Gym Pentatonic Scale Drill -- the pentatonic patterns are only one note different so you will soon figure out how to apply the same principle to the blues scale.

You can play the solo, but what do you do for the rest of the song?
In this video I go over 4 things you can do as a lead guitarist to make your the song sound better.
1. Don't Play.
Few things kill the vibe of a song more than a 3 piece band where a guy is pounding on power chords and then the bottom drops out when he takes a solo. You've gotta budget your energy. If the solo is supposed to be the peak of a song then leading up to the solo you should play stuff that doesn't upstage it. And if you're going to make a constant rise in energy from verse 1 to the prechorus to the chorus and into the solo, then not playing in verse 1, playing a couple notes in the prechorus, and a few notes in the chorus leaves you plenty of vertical room left for your solo.
2. Fill Between The Lyrics
It's common for the guitarist to do fills during the verses and occasionally the chorus. It usually sounds best when those fills happen between the lyrics. There's something really satisfying to the human ear about a "call-and-response" type relationship between musical elements. It's a basic pillar of human communication and has fundamental mythological importance, so why not tap into that power in your guitar playing?
3. Play Patterns
Instead of going from chord to chord to chord like a rhythm player or bass player, you have the freedom to "tie it all together" with a pattern that repeats and doesn't pay a ton of attention to what the chords are. It has to work over all of the chords, but it doesn't have to change over all of the chords. This gives the song some continuity and glues everything together.
4. Play Like a Rhythm Guitarist, but MUCH Quieter
If the song can't afford to be played sparsely then you can fall back on some rhythm guitar techniques like the ones in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YMybIdAb5c
But you have to turn down significantly. A good lead guitar tone has lots of upper midrange to cut through the band and take a position front-and-center in the mix. Problem is, that's also where the lead vocal goes. It usually works well because the lead vocal hands the focus off to the lead guitar for the solo, and then the lead guitar passes it back to the vocal when the solo is over and they don't occupy the same territory at the same time. But when the vocals come back in and you start acting like a rhythm player your tone will be fighting the vocal if you don't turn it down. The audience will still be able to hear you if you turn down because of the fundamental makeup of your guitar tone. But it will be more enjoyable for everyone if you're turned down to the point where your upper midrange isn't competing with the vocal's upper midrange.

Lead guitar is a guitar part which plays melody lines, instrumental fill passages, guitar solos, and occasionally, some riffs within a song structure. The lead is the featured guitar, which usually plays single-note-based lines or double-stops. In rock, heavy metal, blues, jazz, punk, fusion, some pop, and other music styles, lead guitar lines are usually supported by a second guitarist who plays rhythm guitar, which consists of accompaniment chords and riffs.
To create lead guitar lines, guitarists use scales, modes, arpeggios, licks, and riffs that are performed using a variety of techniques. In rock, heavy metal, blues, jazz and fusion bands and some pop contexts as well as others, lead guitar lines often employ alternate picking, sweep picking, economy picking and legato (e.g., hammer ons, pull offs), which are used to maximize the speed of their solos or riffs. Such "tricks" can employ the picking hand used in the fret area (such as tapping), and even be augmented and embellished with devices such as bows, or separate electronic devices such as an EBow (electronic bow).

Plot: Centered on the Denton (TX) based, underground band, Trebuchet, "Four Nights in December" chronicles the making of and reflection on their 2nd independent, full-length album. At the root of the film is the DIY ideal: squeezing every last bit of potential from the resources at your disposal to make the best art possible. The setting of "Four Nights in December" is predominantly Denton's historical square district. There the 5-piece rock outfit decided to record in a second story loft once occupied by one of their members. No fancy recording studio-just a loft, lights, cameras, and a handful of ever-engaging imaginations. The idea was to record the songs much like a live show and capture that experience on film in order to have four music videos to promote/accompany the album upon its release. Shortly thereafter, the idea of "interviews" with members and friends/fans came to fruition. Topics covered throughout the film include the DIY mentality, reasons for recording in such a peculiar way in such a particular setting, band quirks, compositional style, the band's progression, and the band's new album. Shot in different locations around town-including a historical basement bar, a moving van, the band's rehearsal space, a sidewalk on the square, and Studio 105-the interviews bring a rich context and narrative to a relatively unknown musical entity. What the film captures is not just another rock band striving to be heard, but a rock band that does so with a humble and calculated demeanor and a grasp on what it means to make music with integrity.

Some of the band's performances will be fundraisers for The Ryan Gibson Foundation or TRGF. Ray will be spreading the word about the importance of leukemia research as well as raising funds for TRGF.

Plot: Sugar Ray Five ~ Battle of the Bands Finalists/Winners 1984 - Sugar Ray Five were one of the six finalists and eventual winners of the 1984 Battle of the Bands Competition sponsored by TDK. The competition was held throughout the UK in which more than 1700 bands initially entered. Various Nationwide elimination heats were held in which Sugar Ray Five won each heat outright and were eventual outright winners at the Grand Final which was held at the world famous Hammersmith Odeon (now Hammersmith Apollo) in London in front of a capacity crowd and covered by the BBC. Sugar Ray Five completely annihilated the opposition on the night and ending up gaining 147 of the absolute maximum of 150 points available from the judges. Only ever performing original material the self-penned 7" single 'Lazy Hours' with 'March' on the flip side was released into the British charts the following year which received airplay on principal radio and TV but despite being rapidly tipped by the industry for great heights as a true force to be reckoned with in the mid-eighties music scene the group disbanded less than a year later.

You can play the solo, but what do you do for the rest of the song? In this video I go over 4 things you can do as a lead guitarist to make your the song sound better. 1. Don't Play. Few things kill the vibe of a song more than a 3 piece band where a guy is pounding on power chords and then the bottom drops out when he takes a solo. You've gotta budget your energy. If the solo is supposed to be the peak of a song then leading up to the solo you should play stuff that doesn't upstage it. And if you're going to make a constant rise in energy from verse 1 to the prechorus to the chorus and into the solo, then not playing in verse 1, playing a couple notes in the prechorus, and a few notes in the chorus leaves you plenty of vertical room left for your solo. 2. OK so those are the 5 positions of the Blues scale in E. Learn those really thoroughly and start using them as a warm-up exercise.
If you want to really develop fast as a lead guitarist then check out the Secret Guitar Teacher's Gym Pentatonic Scale Drill -- the pentatonic patterns are only one note different so you will soon figure out how to apply the same principle to the blues scale.

You can play the solo, but what do you do for the rest of the song?
In this video I go over 4 things you can do as a lead guitarist to make your the song sound better.
1. Don't Play.
Few things kill the vibe of a song more than a 3 piece band where a guy is pounding on power chords and then the bottom drops out when he takes a solo. You've gotta budget your energy. If the solo is supposed to be the peak of a song then leading up to the solo you should play stuff that doesn't upstage it. And if you're going to make a constant rise in energy from verse 1 to the prechorus to the chorus and into the solo, then not playing in verse 1, playing a couple notes in the prechorus, and a few notes in the chorus leaves you plenty of vertical room left for your solo.
2. Fill Between The Lyrics
It's common for the guitarist to do fills during the verses and occasionally the chorus. It usually sounds best when those fills happen between the lyrics. There's something really satisfying to the human ear about a "call-and-response" type relationship between musical elements. It's a basic pillar of human communication and has fundamental mythological importance, so why not tap into that power in your guitar playing?
3. Play Patterns
Instead of going from chord to chord to chord like a rhythm player or bass player, you have the freedom to "tie it all together" with a pattern that repeats and doesn't pay a ton of attention to what the chords are. It has to work over all of the chords, but it doesn't have to change over all of the chords. This gives the song some continuity and glues everything together.
4. Play Like a Rhythm Guitarist, but MUCH Quieter
If the song can't afford to be played sparsely then you can fall back on some rhythm guitar techniques like the ones in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YMybIdAb5c
But you have to turn down significantly. A good lead guitar tone has lots of upper midrange to cut through the band and take a position front-and-center in the mix. Problem is, that's also where the lead vocal goes. It usually works well because the lead vocal hands the focus off to the lead guitar for the solo, and then the lead guitar passes it back to the vocal when the solo is over and they don't occupy the same territory at the same time. But when the vocals come back in and you start acting like a rhythm player your tone will be fighting the vocal if you don't turn it down. The audience will still be able to hear you if you turn down because of the fundamental makeup of your guitar tone. But it will be more enjoyable for everyone if you're turned down to the point where your upper midrange isn't competing with the vocal's upper midrange.

Lead solos don't always have to involve single note runs. By using a technique known as double stops, you can create beautiful harmonies that flow naturally over the chord changes.
In this lesson I show you how to pull these two-note harmonies from scales and turning them into phrases, both over a single chord and chord changes.

Q: I've been working on a couple of scale shapes and I'm trying to learn a few leads. I've already looked into the CAGED system. But, I'd also like another way to learn the neck. I see players going all over the fretboard when they solo, but I don't really know how that could be studied. So, I am hoping that you might have a method for soloing all across the neck.

A: When it comes to understanding layout concepts for how to play better solos, the two top priorities need to be learning where unisons are located, and how neck regions operate. In this lesson, we'll take a look at how the neck regions can become a part of a study routine for using; the Pentatonic Scales, the Major & Minor Scales, and Arpeggios in different neck areas. We'll establish harmonies as well as, melodies that cover a large region of the fret-board. Once you've had a chance to try these ideas, you can move on to creating your own similar ones.
