Dark Star signed to
Harvest Records, the progressive rock subsidiary of
EMI.
The band went on to release several EPs and a
debut
album,
Twenty Twenty Sound, produced by
Steve Lillywhite.
Following the touring and promotion of Twenty Twenty Sound, the band entered the studio to record the follow-up.
STRANGERS AND MADMEN was mooted as the lead off single and received its first play on
The Evening Session, hosted by
Steve Lamacq. Due to a change in personnel at EMI and a general lack of interest from the label in the new material, it was agreed
the two parties would part.
The band subsequently split in
2001 with no official announcement, to pursue different projects. They were unable to release the already recorded second album, so a bootleg of pre-master mixes of this album is now in circulation, entitled '
Zurich'

Alta Vista Productions.
Starring Vincent Price and
Elizabeth Shepherd it tells of a man haunted by the spirit of his dead wife and her effect on his
second marriage. The screenplay by
Robert Towne was based upon the tale "
Ligeia" by
American author Edgar Allan Poe.The film was directed by
Roger Corman, and was the last in his series of eight film adaptations largely based on the works of Poe.

THE ALBUM/THE FILM
Zürich, the movie/album was compiled as follows. Zürich the album, which as said above has been in circulation in digital
format for quite some time now, had a running track order of this:
STRANGERS AND MADMEN
BIGGER THAN LOVE
3 SECONDS
VALENTINE
PERFECTLY SIMPLE
ROMAN ROAD
CLICKY
BLUE MURDER
THE DAY THAT NEVER WAS
Being well familiar with this sequence, I saw no reason to change it. But I also knew there was another song available called
"
Desert Fever." And a song that never seemed to have a studio version, only live, which was "SYJ." There are a few versions
online of SYJ, I chose the best available one which came from the BOXED
SET Scottish Television recording. It followed "3
Seconds," other versions it follows "Clicky." I felt SYJ after 3 Seconds sounded best. I also noticed that
Valentine,
Roman
Road, and Clicky all mention cars, driving, traveling in some fashion. This made me reshuffle the order of the songs to
highlight this travel theme, hoping there would be some movie images that would accentuate them somehow. The track order was amended to this:
STRANGERS AND MADMEN
BIGGER THAN LOVE
3 SECONDS
SYJ
VALENTINE
CLICKY
ROMAN ROAD
PERFECTLY SIMPLE
BLUE MURDER
THE DAY THAT NEVER WAS
DESERT FEVER
The Tomb of Ligeia and Dreams That Money Can Buy I did not view before making Zürich. My original choice was 1964's "
The Last Man On Earth" starring Vincent Price for the main body of the film.
Something happened though where I could only import about
12 minutes of the film, no matter what I tried.
Last Man was obviously a no go. So I chose Ligeia as a substitute. And rather
than switch from colour to black and white, I chose Dreams That Money Can Buy as an accompanying movie. It started out mostly
Ligeia, but particularly for the "Perfectly
Simple" sequence and the black cat. It was making the majority of the film
Dreams
That Money Can Buy that makes Zürich a better visual/audio experience. (
IMO)
I also remastered the songs that make up Zürich as best as possible. A bit more difficult than with "Twenty Twenty Sound" and
its b-sides/extra tracks, as they were
WAV sourced, whereas Zürich was mp3 sourced because that's all that's available. The
files are fairly brickwalled (apart from Desert Fever and SYJ), so there's not a lot of room to move around and bring out
dynamics in the material, but there is a significant
difference between what's been available, and my remasters. For the
better or worse is subjective.
