Those whose lives have been uprooted and torn apart by conflict or natural disaster, UNHCR exists to help them. This is our story. The High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) was established in December 1950. The Second World War left over one million refugees far from home and governments in need of assistance to coordinate the crisis. UNHCR was created to help. The founders thought their task would only take three years but new conflicts broke out and more families were forced flee their homes. In 1951 we started with 34 employees. By the end of 2013 we had over 8,000 people working in 126 countries. Cate Blanchett performs the rhythmic poem ‘What They Took With Them’ alongside fellow actors Keira Knightley, Juliet Stevenson, Peter Capaldi, Stanley Tucci, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kit Harington, Douglas Booth, Jesse Eisenberg and Neil Gaiman. The poem was written by Jenifer Toksvig and was inspired by stories and first-hand testimonies from refugees forced to flee their homes and items they took with them. One of the sources for the poem was Brian Sokol’s photography project, ‘The Most Important Thing,’ made in collaboration with UNHCR. Many of Brian's photos, along with firsthand accounts from the refugees he photographed, are featured in the film. Released exclusively on Facebook, the film urges people to sign the #WithRefugees petition to help ensure refugees have the basics to build bac...

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - A summit hosted by U.S. President Barack Obama garnered pledges from dozens of countries to resettle or allow the lawful admission of some 360,000 refugees, doubling the number of slots that were available last year, the U.S. envoy to the United Nations said. But Ambassador Samantha Power said that was "still only a fraction" of what was needed because the U.N. refugee agency, UNHCR, has assessed that some 1.2 million refugees need to be resettled. Countries could only attend Obama's summit at the annual U.N. gathering of world leaders if they made a pledge. Obama told the summit that the refugee crisis was "a test of our international system where all nations ought to share in our collective responsibilities, because the vast majority of refugees are hosted b...

【TEXT】U.N.: Millions of Refugee Children Cannot Attend School World leaders will gather at United Nations headquarters in New York this week for the yearly meetings of the U.N. General Assembly. The leaders have been invited to a special summit on refugees and economic migrants. They will discuss ways to improve the international community’s reaction to the growing number of refugees and migrants worldwide. The world’s refugee crisis is now as bad as it was during World War II, according to The New York Times newspaper. The leaders are expected to talk about access to education for refugee children. When families flee from countries because of war or political insecurity, the children leave behind not only their homes but, in many cases, their education. That is the subject of a new repor...

“Everyday we listen to harrowing stories of people fleeing for their lives, across dangerous borders, and unfriendly seas”. The Syrian war has driven almost 4 million people over the borders; over 7 million are on the run inside the country; over half the Syrian population has been forced to flee. In a powerful, moving talk, Melissa Fleming of the UN’s refugee agency shares the story of Doaa, a 19 year old Syrian refugee that made the decision along with her fiancé to take the risk of crossing the Mediterranean Sea in order to make it to the promise of Europe. Melissa Fleming asks why so little is being done to stop the wars, the persecution and the poverty that is driving so many people to the shores of Europe. Home to over three hundred thousand people, the Dadaab Refugee Camp in Northern Kenya is the largest in the world. But now it’s shutting down. The Kenyan government has drawn up a solid timetable for the closure, something that the Foreign Ministry says is driven by economic and security realities. But this prompted the UN refugee agency UNHCR to voice concern over the move and call for reconsideration, while Kenya hit back claiming that international support for the camp has always been dismal. So will the refugee tripartite agreement signed in 2013 by Kenya, Somalia & the UNHCR hold or is there no turning back on Dadaab's closure? Peninah Karibe & her panel of experts delve into the hot-button issue of refugee repatriation in this episode of Talk Africa.
