VICE travels to the most dangerous country in the world to figure out what the hell is happening in Darfur. The Devil Came on Horseback presents a first-person account of the genocide in Darfur. Former Marine Captain Brian Steidle joined the African Union in 2004 to help monitor the cease-fire in Sudan. As he puts it, All I had was a camera, a pen, and paper. I was totally unprepared for what I'd see.
An unarmed military civilian, he describes his observations, via voice-over and audio recordings, as filmmakers Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern alternate between their contemporary footage and his images of slaughtered civilians and incinerated villages. When his contract ends, Steidle leaves in disillusionment. He wrote his reports and took his pictures, but nothing changed.
Since reporters lacked the same degree of access, he goes to The New York Times, and they publish his photographs. The soldier-turned-activist proceeds to spread the word everywhere he can. Aside from Steidle, the film features his sister Gretchen Wallace, founder of Global Grassroots (an organization working with female victims in Sudan and Rwanda), and Senator Barack Obama, who has also made Darfur his personal mission.
The title comes from a loose translation of janjaweed, the government-backed Arab militias behind the atrocities to which Steidle bore witness. (Steidle and his sister use the same title for the book they wrote together.) As in their previous documentary, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, Sundberg and Stern maintain a measured tone, but their subject's horrifying images speak for themselves.

A brief overview of the Darfur conflict from a friend of mine who has spent a considerable amount of time "on the ground" there.
The overview describes three of the significant "drivers" that explain what is going on in Darfur, but also show why decreasing the misery is so difficult.
The three "drivers" are 1) ethnicity, 2) oil (mostly China, in the ongoing "scramble for Africa"), and 3) desertification/climate change.
I hope this overview is helpful. Any informative comments are greatly appreciated.
As a personal note, with the Darfur hell so centred around oil, I can't help but think of the Iraq hell, that also began in 2003, and has likely resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians—basically folks like you and me.
Don't you just dream of a time when enough people actually say, "No"—and it has meaning? Maybe that time is closer than we know.

Three years of fighting in Darfur have destroyed hundreds of villages, displaced 2.2 million and led to more than 400,000 deaths. President Bush has accused the government of Sudan of genocide, but the U.S. has taken few concrete actions to stop the fighting. Narrated by Sam Waterston, this documentary tells the story of those who have lost their loved ones to this war, those who are fighting to survive and those who are working to bring peace to the region.

The conflict in Darfur, in western Sudan, has already cost as many as 300,000 lives. That estimate includes the many who died from malnutrition during the worst years of violence.
More than 2.5 million people were driven from their homes.
And now, some of the rebels say this week's referendum could provoke a major flare-up, after some years of relative quiet.
Darfur is currently divided into five states. Its people will decide this week if the area should go back to being one region – as it was until 1994.
Is the five-state system better for development, as the government claims? Or does it just make Darfur easier to control, as the rebels say?

Darfur (Arabic: دار فور Dār Fūr, English: Realm of the Fur) is a region in western Sudan. An independent sultanate for several hundred years, it was incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1916. The region is divided into five federal states: Central Darfur, East Darfur, North Darfur, South Darfur and West Darfur. Because of the war in Darfur between Sudanese government forces and the non-Arab indigenous population, the region was in a state of humanitarian emergency between 2003 and 2010.
Darfur covers an area of some 493,180 square kilometers (190,420 sq mi)—approximately the size of Spain. It is largely an arid plateau with the Marrah Mountains (Jebel Marra), a range of volcanic peaks rising up to 3,042 meters (9,980 ft) of topographic prominence, in the center of the region. The region's main towns are Al Fashir, Nyala, and Geneina.

President Bush has accused the government of Sudan of genocide, but the U.S. has taken few concrete actions to stop the fighting. The conflict in Darfur, in western Sudan, has already cost as many as 300,000 lives. That estimate includes the many who died from malnutrition during the worst years of violence. More than 2.5 million people were driven from their homes. And now, some of the rebels say this week's referendum could provoke a major flare-up, after some years of relative quiet. Darfur is currently divided into five states. Its people will decide this week if the area should go back to being one region – as it was until 1994. The Devil Came on Horseback presents a first-person account of the genocide in Darfur. Former Marine Captain Brian Steidle joined the African Union in 2004 to help monitor the cease-fire in Sudan. As he puts it, All I had was a camera, a pen, and paper. I was totally unprepared for what I'd see.
An unarmed military civilian, he describes his observations, via voice-over and audio recordings, as filmmakers Annie Sundberg and Ricki Stern alternate between their contemporary footage and his images of slaughtered civilians and incinerated villages. When his contract ends, Steidle leaves in disillusionment. He wrote his reports and took his pictures, but nothing changed.
Since reporters lacked the same degree of access, he goes to The New York Times, and they publish his photographs. The soldier-turned-activist proceeds to spread the word everywhere he can. Aside from Steidle, the film features his sister Gretchen Wallace, founder of Global Grassroots (an organization working with female victims in Sudan and Rwanda), and Senator Barack Obama, who has also made Darfur his personal mission.
The title comes from a loose translation of janjaweed, the government-backed Arab militias behind the atrocities to which Steidle bore witness. (Steidle and his sister use the same title for the book they wrote together.) As in their previous documentary, The Trials of Darryl Hunt, Sundberg and Stern maintain a measured tone, but their subject's horrifying images speak for themselves.

A brief overview of the Darfur conflict from a friend of mine who has spent a considerable amount of time "on the ground" there.
The overview describes three of the significant "drivers" that explain what is going on in Darfur, but also show why decreasing the misery is so difficult.
The three "drivers" are 1) ethnicity, 2) oil (mostly China, in the ongoing "scramble for Africa"), and 3) desertification/climate change.
I hope this overview is helpful. Any informative comments are greatly appreciated.
As a personal note, with the Darfur hell so centred around oil, I can't help but think of the Iraq hell, that also began in 2003, and has likely resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians—basically folks like you and me.
Don't you just dream of a time when enough people actually say, "No"—and it has meaning? Maybe that time is closer than we know.

Darfur Now (Documentary...2007) The struggles and achievements of six individuals bring to light the situation in Darfur and the need to get involved. Sudan's western region of Darfur has voted to retain its current multi-state administrative status. More than 97% of voters in a referendum chose to remain as five states rather than form a single region. The vote was boycotted by major rebel and opposition groups which say a united region would have more autonomy. The referendum on whether to keep the region's current administrative system of five states or unite them into one region was conducted between April 11th and 13th. The vote was part of a peace process to end 13 years of conflict that has left 300,000 people dead. -

The United Nations says some 3,000 people have been killed in Sudan’s Darfur region, over four million people need aid and more than two million have been displaced. The United States has expressed concern, both publicly and privately to the Sudanese government about ongoing fighting. Niemat Ahmadi, is the president and founder of the Washington-based Darfur Women Action Group and joins VOA’s Vincent Makori to tell us more. -

It makes me sad to think about, the thousands of kids forced kill without, a justifiable reason. Handed a gun and raped of all thought and decision. Brain washed and forced to fight, not for freedom and not for there lives. Murderers at the age of thirteen. Killing for there country, reasons so obscene. And still thousands fight and thousands die, and know one seems to be wondering why. But we do nothing, we do nothing. And there, killing for greed and power. Killing to kill them all. Killing for god. Genocide
