Sandbags are an often overlooked prepping item. Why would anyone leave out on an item with so many uses? They are inexpensive, can provide expedient shelter, protect in a nuclear disaster, stops floods, and stops bullets...? I wasn't sure, so in this video I test various calibers to see if the common sandbag will stop a bullet and if not, how many sandbags does it take to stop some of the most common calibers. We tested 9mm, 40 S&W;, .223, 7.62x54R, and 7mm Remington Magnum.

Well wow! I can honestly say I never ever ever expected this to get 1000 views, let alone 4 million, so thanks for watching! The cabin is two stories now and does have a proper slanted roof. We moved to town in 2014 to be closer to school and work, and have been too busy to finish the project. We're working on a video update, so if you are really that curious go ahead and subscribe :)
I get a lot of questions about the rocks. The rocks were for holding the barbed wire down, which is hard to make out unless you are watching in 1080. The barbed wire acts as a bond between the layers.
I also get a lot of questions along the lines of "why not use logs?!" The logs you see on the property are not suitable for cabin building, and buying logs is really, really, really expensive relative to earthbag construction. Also, we were just really curious to see how such a building would fare in Alaska.

-Yes, it's still standing. We did a lot more work to it and lived in it for 3 years. We sold it this fall.
-I am working on an update video. It will go up sometime in November 2016. Since it's mostly stills I'm having to dig through about 65 gigs of pictures to put together a decent time-lapse, but I am working on it.

Sandbag
A sandbag is a bag or sack made of hessian (burlap), polypropylene or other sturdy materials that is filled with sand or soil and used for such purposes as flood control, military fortification, shielding glass windows in war zones, ballast, and in other applications requiring mobile fortification.
The advantages are that the bags and sand are inexpensive. When empty, the bags are compact and lightweight for easy storage and transportation. They can be brought to a site empty and filled with local sand or soil. Disadvantages are that filling bags is labor-intensive. Without proper training, sandbag walls can be constructed improperly causing them to fail at a lower height than expected. They can degrade prematurely in the sun and elements once deployed. They can also become contaminated by flood waters making them difficult to deal with after flood waters recede.
Usage
Sandbags may be used during emergencies when rivers threaten to overflow their banks, or when a levee or dike is damaged. They may also be used in non-emergency situations (or after an emergency) as a foundation for new levees or other water-control structures. Sandbags are not always effective in preventing flooding because water will eventually seep through the bags and finer materials, like clay, may leak out through the seams. After usage, dry sandbags can be stored for future use. Wet bags may need to be disposed in a landfill as they may be contaminated by chemicals and fecal matter.

I wasn't sure, so in this video I test various calibers to see if the common sandbag will stop a bullet and if not, how many sandbags does it take to stop some of the most common calibers. We tested 9mm, 40 S&W;, .223, 7.62x54R, and 7mm Remington Magnum.

Well wow! I can honestly say I never ever ever expected this to get 1000 views, let alone 4 million, so thanks for watching! The cabin is two stories now and does have a proper slanted roof. We moved to town in 2014 to be closer to school and work, and have been too busy to finish the project. We're working on a video update, so if you are really that curious go ahead and subscribe :)
I get a lot of questions about the rocks. The rocks were for holding the barbed wire down, which is hard to make out unless you are watching in 1080. The barbed wire acts as a bond between the layers.
I also get a lot of questions along the lines of "why not use logs?!" The logs you see on the property are not suitable for cabin building, and buying logs is really, really, really expensive relative to earthbag construction. Also, we were just really curious to see how such a building would fare in Alaska.
