Mosul (/moʊˈsuːl/; Arabic: الموصل – al-Mawṣil (local pronunciation: el-Mōṣul); Syriac: ܢܝܢܘܐ – Nînwe; Kurdish: مووسڵ – Mûsil) is a city of normally about two and a half million people (2014 est.) in northern Iraq, illegally occupied since 10 June 2014 by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.
Mosul is completely ruled by the Islamic State terror group headquartered in Al-Raqqah, Syria. The legitimate government of Iraq stopped paying salaries soon after the city was overrun by militants. (that ISIL allegedly exploited by stealing a generous percentage) which it had previously paid to city workers including nurses, doctors,
Located some 400 km (250 mi) north of Baghdad, the original city stands on the west bank of the Tigris River, opposite the ancient Assyrian city of Nineveh on the east bank, but the metropolitan area has grown to encompass substantial areas on both the "Left Coast" (east side) and the "Right Coast" (west side) as the two banks are described in the local language.

Iraq (/ɪˈræk/, i/ɪˈrɑːk/, or /aɪˈræk/; Arabic: العراق al-‘Irāq, Kurdish: Êraq), officially the Republic of Iraq (Arabic:
جمهورية العراق Jumhūrīyat al-‘Irāq; Kurdish: كۆماری عێراق Komar-i ‘Êraq), is a country in Western Asia. The country borders Turkey to the north, Iran to the east, Kuwait to the southeast, Saudi Arabia to the south, Jordan to the southwest, and Syria to the west. The southern part of Iraq is within the Arabian Peninsula. The capital, Baghdad, is in the centre of the country and its largest city. The largest ethnic groups in Iraq are Arabs and Kurds. Other ethnic groups include Assyrians, Turkmen, Shabakis, Yazidis, Armenians, Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Around 95% of the country's 36 million citizens are Shia or Sunni Muslims, with Christianity, Yarsan, Yezidism, and Mandeanism also present.
Iraq has a narrow section of coastline measuring 58 km (36 mi) on the northern Persian Gulf and its territory encompasses the Mesopotamian Alluvial Plain, the northwestern end of the Zagros mountain range, and the eastern part of the Syrian Desert. Two major rivers, the Tigris and Euphrates, run south through the centre of Iraq and flow into the Shatt al-Arab near the Persian Gulf. These rivers provide Iraq with significant amounts of fertile land.

It's a city where entire districts have been emptied of people and where ancient sites have been systematically destroyed. Now, a year after Iraq's second city Mosul was captured by the militant group calling themselves Islamic State, we have an exclusive and unique investigation into how deeply entrenched the terror group is in the city. The BBC looks at how the militants control most aspects of daily life, including dress codes and schools, which residents say are used to indoctrinate children. And as this report shows, many are living in fear of being punished according to the group's extreme interpretation of Islamic law. The Iraqi army has launched an offensive to liberate the northern city of Mosul from Daesh terrorists. The army says its forces have managed to flush the terrorists out of several villages. It also says the offensive is the first phase of the operation aimed at recapturing Mosul which fell to Daesh two years ago. The Iraqi troops have also been making major gains against Daesh in the western Anbar province, dealing a major blow to the terror group. Daesh terrorists occupied large swathes of land in northern and western Iraq following their onslaught in June 2014. But they have lost much of the territory to Iraqi forces since then. The Islamic State, a hardline Sunni jihadist group that formerly had ties to al Qaeda, has conquered large swathes of Iraq and Syria. Previously known as the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS), the group has announced its intention to reestablish the caliphate and has declared its leader, the shadowy Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, as the caliph. The lightning advances the Islamic State made across Syria and Iraq in June shocked the world. But it's not just the group's military victories that have garnered attention — it's also the pace with which its members have begun to carve out a viable state. Flush with cash and US weapons seized during its advances in Iraq, the Islamic State's expansion shows no sign of slowing down. In the first week of August alone, Islamic State fighters have taken...

Iraq's Prime Minister says government forces and their allies will retake control of Mosul by the end of the year. It's been an effective summer for Iraqi forces battling ISIL. Now, they're fighting to retake Iraq's second biggest city - Mosul - which has been under ISIL control for more than two years. The Iraqi army, Kurdish forces, Shia militias and the US air force are all converging on the city from different directions. Iraqi soldiers re-took Qayara on Saturday. It's an oil-producing town that's about 70 kilometres south of Mosul, and near a major air base. The Iraqi army had been fighting for control of Qayara for several weeks. Now, Prime Minister Haider al Abadi says Mosul will be captured by the end of the year. So, how ready are government forces? and what does the off...

In 2014, Islamic State militants swept into Western Iraq's Anbar Province, overrunning Iraqi security forces, enslaving minorities, and causing thousands to flee for their lives. The jihadist group captured Iraq’s largest city, Mosul, and the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah, where hundreds of US troops died fighting the Islamic State’s predecessor. Now, two years later, the Iraqi security forces, with help from Iranian-supported Shiite militias and US military advisors and warplanes, are fighting to take back towns and cities in Anbar, one battle at a time. But it’s a difficult task: Anbar has been the crucible of Iraq’s insurgency, and is the country’s Sunni heartland — long marginalized by and hostile to the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. Date : 21.8.2016 The Iraqi army and volunteer forces have been carrying out an offensive to liberate Mosul from Daesh terrorists. Mosul fell into the hands of the Takfiri terrorists in June 2014 when the terror group claimed it as their main bastion in Iraq. But the Iraqi army and the allied Popular Mobilization Units have been immensely successful in flushing the extremists out of the cities fell to Daesh. There are more variables at play through, one being the United States. Critics have time and again questioned US deployment of troops, citing Washington's failure to commit them when Daesh was overrunning Syrian and Iraqi cities one after another. In tonight's edition of the Debate, we'll focus on the role of some of the major players on the ground as Baghdad appears to be on the verge...
