What is the purpose of research and development (R&D;)? Research and development is the process and activities related to extending the products and services that a firm offers. There are two components to research and development: (1) research which is primarily focused on extending the knowledge of the firm, and (2) development which is focused on turning that new knowledge into usable products and services.
What are some examples of research and development activities?
You might think about research and development activities in terms of a process. On one end of the process you have raw ideas and then at the other end of that process you have a usable and well used product or service. Thus, the activities involved in research and development involves:
(1) Generating and cultivating ideas.
(2) Thinking of user requirements how these ideas fit with users’ needs.
(3) Design and development of the product or service.
(4) Quality assurance and testing of the product or service.
(5) Repeating the process with users in mind.
The key with successful research and development is to both allow the proliferation of ideas and as well as have the input of users.

R&D; management is the discipline of designing and leading R&D; processes, managing R&D; organizations, and ensuring smooth transfer of new know-how and technology to other groups or departments involved in innovation.
R&D; management can be defined as where the tasks of innovation management (i.e., creating and commercializing inventions) meet the tasks of technology management (i.e., external and internal creation and retention of technological know-how). It covers activities such as basic research, fundamental research, technology development, advanced development, concept development, new product development, process development, prototyping, R&D; portfolio management, technology transfer, etc., but generally is not considered to include technology licensing, innovation management, IP management, corporate venturing, incubation, etc. as those are sufficiently independent activities that can be carried out without the presence of a R&D; function in a firm.
Few dedicated management models for R&D; exist. Among the more popularized ones are Arthur D. Little's Third generation R&D; management, the Development funnel, the Phase–gate model All these models are concerned with improving R&D; performance and result productivity, managing R&D; as a process, and providing the R&D; function with an environment in which the inherent technological and market uncertainties can be managed.
The Path to Developing Successful New Products a joint research by MIT & McKinsey & Co. points out three key practices that can play critical role in R&D; Management: Talk to the customer, Nurture a project culture, Keep it focused.

Aiton (Hungarian: Ajton; German: Eiten) is a commune in Cluj County, Romania. It is composed of two villages, Aiton and Rediu (Rőd).

The population modified during time, as follows:
History
An ancient Roman milliarium has been discovered in Aiton in the 18th century (Milliarium of Aiton). It milestone, dating from 108 AD, shortly after the Roman conquest of Dacia, shows the construction of the road from Potaissa to Napoca, by demand of the Emperor Trajan. It indicates the distance of ten thousand feet (P.M.X.) to Potaissa. This is the first epigraphical attestation of the settlements of Potaissa and Napoca in Roman Dacia.
The complete inscription is: "Imp(erator)/ Caesar Nerva/ Traianus Aug(ustus)/ Germ(anicus) Dacicus/ pontif(ex) maxim(us)/ (sic) pot(estate) XII co(n)s(ul) V/ imp(erator) VI p(ater) p(atriae) fecit/ per coh(ortem) I Fl(aviam) Vlp(iam)/ Hisp(anam) mil(liariam) c(ivium) R(omanorum) eq(uitatam)/ a Potaissa Napo/cam / m(ilia) p(assuum) X". What is the purpose of research and development (R&D;)? Research and development is the process and activities related to extending the products and services that a firm offers. There are two components to research and development: (1) research which is primarily focused on extending the knowledge of the firm, and (2) development which is focused on turning that new knowledge into usable products and services.
What are some examples of research and development activities?
You might think about research and development activities in terms of a process. On one end of the process you have raw ideas and then at the other end of that process you have a usable and well used product or service. Thus, the activities involved in research and development involves:
(1) Generating and cultivating ideas.
(2) Thinking of user requirements how these ideas fit with users’ needs.
(3) Design and development of the product or service.
(4) Quality assurance and testing of the product or service.
(5) Repeating the process with users in mind.

R&D; management can be defined as where the tasks of innovation management (i.e., creating and commercializing inventions) meet the tasks of technology management (i.e., external and internal creation and retention of technological know-how). It covers activities such as basic research, fundamental research, technology development, advanced development, concept development, new product development, process development, prototyping, R&D; portfolio management, technology transfer, etc., but generally is not considered to include technology licensing, innovation management, IP management, corporate venturing, incubation, etc. as those are sufficiently independent activities that can be carried out without the presence of a R&D; function in a firm.

The Path to Developing Successful New Products a joint research by MIT & McKinsey & Co. points out three key practices that can play critical role in R&D; Management: Talk to the customer, Nurture a project culture, Keep it focused.

What is the purpose of research and development (R&D;)? Research and development is the process and activities related to extending the products and services that a firm offers. There are two components to research and development: (1) research which is primarily focused on extending the knowledge of the firm, and (2) development which is focused on turning that new knowledge into usable products and services.
What are some examples of research and development activities?
You might think about research and development activities in terms of a process. On one end of the process you have raw ideas and then at the other end of that process you have a usable and well used product or service. Thus, the activities involved in research and development involves:
(1) Generating and cultivating ideas.
(2) Thinking of user requirements how these ideas fit with users’ needs.
(3) Design and development of the product or service.
(4) Quality assurance and testing of the product or service.
(5) Repeating the process with users in mind.
The key with successful research and development is to both allow the proliferation of ideas and as well as have the input of users.
