As a lifetime Kansas City Chiefs fan, there are so many things that I get sick of hearing when it comes to describing Alex Smith. “Alex Smith is a game manager” That is fine by me. I don’t want a QB that is a loose cannon. I want him to take care of the football. "Alex Smith has a weak arm and cannot throw the ball deep” Bullshit. You don’t get drafted #1 overall if you have a weak arm and cannot throw the ball deep. “Alex Smith can only throw 5-10 yard passes” More Bullshit. It’s called the West Coast Offense. The offense is based on a strong run game with quick, short passes to RB’s, TE’s and WR’s while gaining yards after the catch. It requires a lot of downfield blocking and it takes a very intelligent QB to run it. Joe Montana used to describe it as an offense that slowly wears down a defense. You throw mostly short passes while always keeping pressure on the defense, then you take your shots down the field. It took defenses years to finally catch up to it but, it is still very effective with proper execution and the right personnel. Montana threw tons of short screen passes to his RB’s and TE's. That is why Roger Craig is 10th all time in receiving yards in San Francisco history. Jim Harbaugh’s offense was way more aggressive than Andy Reid’s offense. It was an old school power offense with two TE sets, a power run game and high efficiency passing. Smith benefited from high-percentage passes in the 49ers' playbook that worked because that offense was designed to limit what Smith must do once the ball is snapped. The 49ers did a great job of pulling safeties into the box with their run game, and by using play-action, Smith was able to freeze those safeties and make one read before delivering the ball. “Alex Smith has never had a 4000 yard season” Neither did Joe Montana. Anyone who actually believes any of these nonsensical statements from either sports media or FANTASY GEEKS, has never really watched Alex Smith play. Today’s NFL is a pass happy league filled with big pass plays made for TV highlights and FANTASY FOOTBALL NERDS who sit with their laptops in front of the TV every Sunday actually rooting for individual players to score them points even if it goes against their own team. I never understood that. The GEEKS and the talking heads raved about the 2013 Denver Broncos. They were one of the best passing offenses in NFL history. Well that maybe true statistically but, they were destroyed by a team in the Super Bowl with a strong run game, a solid, aggressive defense and a QB who was only 22nd in the league in passing and threw for 3357 yards that season. While making this video, I have spent hours watching Alex Smith play and I can truly say that Alex Smith plays with pure heart. He is competitive, very smart and can make great plays with his legs. He is absolutely underrated as an NFL QB. The 2014 season was somewhat of a disappointment to Chiefs fans because of a horrible offensive line decimated by free agency that was ranked 26th in the league in sacks allowed (3 per game) and a weak WR corps that was second in the league with 29 dropped passes. The problem clearly was not Alex Smith. I made this video to allow Chiefs fans to see him play in his early years before he got to KC. If you want to see him sling the ball down the field, just watch his 49er years when he had Vernon Davis in that power based offense. Davis was a sure handed TE who was always open down the field. There was a lot of the same kind of chemistry between Smith and Travis Kelce last season but Reid’s offense mainly sends TE’s and receivers in a lot of shallow crossing routes underneath. Besides, the pass blocking was so horrendous by the offensive line last season that there was never enough time for routes to actually develop or guys to get open downfield before the pocket collapsed and Smith was running for his life. If Smith forms the same kind of chemistry with Jeremy Maclin that he had with Davis in SF and the Chiefs can solidify the offensive line, then Smith could absolutely be the QB that finally takes Kansas City back to a Super Bowl. Why do I believe that? Because neither the 49ers nor the Chiefs have ever lost a playoff game because of Alex Smith playing poorly. Trust me Chiefs fans, this is the QB that can take the team to a Championship very soon.
