This delicate and haunting fable from elder statesman of Portuguese filmmaking Manoel de Oliveira has been intepreted in many quarters as the director's response to the violence and brutality of September 11th; it also functions a poignant reflection on the birth and death of civilization. The film begins aboard a cruise ship that departs from Lisbon and is heading to Bombay, India, with many stops along the way. On board are Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira) and daughter Maria Joana (Filipa de Almedia). As the tourists travel from county to country, Rosa Maria talks to her daughter about the myths and culture of various civilizations; stops include the Sphinx, the Acropolis, Istanbul and many other locales. Tourists board in several locations - many played by celebrities including Irene Papas, Catherine Deneuve, and Stefania Sandrelli - and they engage in lengthy, cultured, super-intellectual discussions with one another aboard the boat, mostly about the birth of civilization and the violence that must accompany it. In these discussions, each individual speaks to the others in his or her native language, sans any difficulty of understanding from the others. Then, a darker truth about the nature of the ship itself emerges, and sets the film up for an unexpectedly horrifying ending. A Talking Picture was shown in competition at the 2003 Venice Film Festival.

Observações: Estreado em 1956 no São Luíz e no Alvalade, em Lisboa. Teve o aplauso unânime da crítica. Aplauso que se repetiu em Paris e em Veneza e que lhe valeu, em 1957, o primeiro prémio internacional da sua carreira, a Harpa de Ouro do Festival de Cork, na Irlanda. Recebeu, também, o Prémio SNI para a Melhor Fotografia.
"Em 1955 fui à Alemanha. Havia já um curso sobre a côr, que me começou a interessar muitíssimo. Fiz um curso na Agfa, curso intensivo sobre a côr durante um mês. Depois fui a Munique ver as máquinas, e embrenhei-me outra vez. Arranjei uma máquina e comecei pelo Pintor e a Cidade que foi o meu primeiro filme a côr e um dos primeiros filmes portugueses a côr.
Fiz O Pintor contra O Douro. Enquanto O Douro é um filme de montagem, O Pintor é um filme de êxtases.
Eu descobri no Pintor e a Cidade que o tempo é um elemento muito importante. A imagem rápida tem um efeito, mas a imagem quando persiste ganha outra forma.
O Pintor e a Cidade é uma obra fundamental na minha carreira, na mudança da minha reflexão sobre o cinema.
É a primeira vez que eu volto as costas a um cinema de montagem".

"Produção independente que, por um lado, retoma o espírito pioneiro e vanguardista do Douro, é, em termos narrativos e estilísticos, uma ruptura total com o que ficou para trás.(...) Mais precisamente, o que se trata aqui é de parar e reflectir sobre o cinema e os seus materiais, de decompor imagens (imagens da cidade e imagens de um outro olhar sobre essa cidade), separá-las entre si e dos sons respectivos, e repensar de origem para que serve isso de juntá-los de novo, com que sentido, com que objectivo.(...) ligando isto ao tema - o que se trata é de reflectir transparentemente uma das ideias essenciais de todo o cinema de Oliveira: a ideia de desdobramento, o sucessivo desdobramento de olhares que o acto de filmar (e de ver um filme) representa.
...Aqui, o emprego do som é revelador, na medida em que é o som que conta essas relações, a história dessas relações. (No O Pintor e a Cidade o som é como que a "ficção").(...) É o som que "puxa" essa entrada sucessiva da sua imagem para o real fílmico. É o som que a liga, que a faz cumprir uma função.
...A arte como veículo intermediário, não como ponte "entre o autor e o mundo", mas como lugar de concentração/irradiação de olhares e intenções, como espelho que reflecte em todas as direcções, eis o que nos parece a essência de O Pintor e a Cidade".

A Caça
A trama desenvolve-se à volta de dois amigos que resolvem caçar sem espingardas.
Enquanto caminham conversam, só que um deles cai num buraco, numa zona pantanosa. O outro colega, aflito corre em busca de auxílio, trazendo atrás de si uma cadeia humana que tenta salvar a vítima, mas não se conseguem entender.
Este filme obteve uma Menção Especial do Júri da Federação Internacional de Cine-Clubes reunido em Toulon, que o considerou a melhor curta metragem.
"Em 1963, quando A Caça foi presente à Censura, o filme terminava com a morte de José. Os censores acharam esse final muito pessimista e colocaram a Oliveira o dilema: ou o filme não passava, ou Oliveira filmava mais um plano em que o rapaz, afinal, se salvava. E com esse happy end (afinal bem pouco happy) o filme foi visto entre 1963 e 1988. Por essa altura, e quando se organizou a Mostra de Cinema Português em Pesaro, propôs-se a Oliveira que refizesse a montagem, eliminando o plano espúrio. Oliveira fê-lo e a versão original (ou seja a versão conforme ao desejo de Oliveira) foi vista, pela primeira vez, em Pesaro, em 1988. Em Portugal, contudo, permaneceu inédita até Outubro de 1993, quando foi apresentada pela primeira vez na Cinemateca no Ciclo "Oliveira, o Culto e o Oculto".

No entanto, no livro "Contemporary Film Directors: Manoel de Oliveira", de Randal Johnson, diz que o próprio Manoel de Oliveira resolveu manter a cena imposta, embora seja apenas visível depois do genérico final. O autor, mesmo podendo apagar essa cena, resolveu absorvê-la.

Manoel Cândido Pinto de Oliveira, GCSE (Portuguese pronunciation: [mɐnuˈɛɫ doliˈvɐjɾɐ]; born December 11, 1908) is a Portuguese film director born in Cedofeita, Porto. He began working on films in the late 1920s, but did not receive international recognition until the early 1970s. Since the late 1980s he has been one of the most prolific working film directors and continues to make an average of one film per year past the age of 100. In March 2008 he was reported to be the oldest active film director in the world, and is possibly the second oldest film director ever after George Abbott. He is also the only filmmaker whose active career has spanned from the silent era to the digital age. Among his numerous awards are two Career Golden Lions from the Venice Film Festival.
Manoel de Oliveira was born in Porto, Portugal, on December 11, 1908, to Francisco José de Oliveira and Cândida Ferreira Pinto. His family were wealthy industrialists and agricultural landowners. His father owned a dry-goods factory, produced the first electric light bulbs in Portugal and built an electric energy plant before he died in 1932. Oliveira was educated at the Colegio Universal in Porto before attending a Jesuit boarding school in Galicia, Spain. As a teenager his goal was to become an actor. At 17, he joined his brothers as an executive in his father's factories, where he remained for the majority of his adult life when not making films. In a 1981 Sight and Sound article, John Gillett describes Oliveira as having "spent most of his life in business...making films only when circumstances allowed."

The film begins aboard a cruise ship that departs from Lisbon and is heading to Bombay, India, with many stops along the way. On board are Rosa Maria (Leonor Silveira) and daughter Maria Joana (Filipa de Almedia). As the tourists travel from county to country, Rosa Maria talks to her daughter about the myths and culture of various civilizations; stops include the Sphinx, the Acropolis, Istanbul and many other locales. Eu descobri no Pintor e a Cidade que o tempo é um elemento muito importante. A imagem rápida tem um efeito, mas a imagem quando persiste ganha outra forma.
O Pintor e a Cidade é uma obra fundamental na minha carreira, na mudança da minha reflexão sobre o cinema.
É a primeira vez que eu volto as costas a um cinema de montagem".

"Produção independente que, por um lado, retoma o espírito pioneiro e vanguardista do Douro, é, em termos narrativos e estilísticos, uma ruptura total com o que ficou para trás.(...) Mais precisamente, o que se trata aqui é de parar e reflectir sobre o cinema e os seus materiais, de decompor imagens (imagens da cidade e imagens de um outro olhar sobre essa cidade), separá-las entre si e dos sons respectivos, e repensar de origem para que serve isso de juntá-los de novo, com que sentido, com que objectivo.(...) ligando isto ao tema - o que se trata é de reflectir transparentemente uma das ideias essenciais de todo o cinema de Oliveira: a ideia de desdobramento, o sucessivo desdobramento de olhares que o acto de filmar (e de ver um filme) representa.
...Aqui, o emprego do som é revelador, na medida em que é o som que conta essas relações, a história dessas relações. (No O Pintor e a Cidade o som é como que a "ficção").(...) A sick worker at a polar station located at the South Pole was airlifted from the site early Wednesday by a small plane making a daring rescue mission, U.S. officials said.
