A bhikkhu (Pali, Sanskrit: bhikṣu) is an ordained male monastic ("monk") in Buddhism. A female monastic ("nun") is called a bhikkhuni (Sanskrit bhikṣuṇī).
The lives of all Buddhist monastics are governed by a set of rules called the prātimokṣa or pātimokkha. Their lifestyles are shaped to support their spiritual practice: to live a simple and meditative life and attain nirvana.
A person under the age of 20 cannot be ordained as a bhikkhu or bhikkhuni but can be ordained as a śrāmaṇera or śrāmaṇērī.
Bhikkhu literally means "beggar" or "one who lives by alms". The historical Buddha, Prince Siddhartha, having abandoned a life of pleasure and status, lived as an alms mendicant as part of his śramaṇa lifestyle. Those of his more serious students who abandoned their lives as householders and came to study full-time under his supervision also adopted this lifestyle. These full-time student members of the sangha became the community of ordained monastics who wandered from town to city throughout the year, living off alms and stopping in one place only for the Vassa, the rainy months of the monsoon season.
Chinese Buddhism (Han Chinese Buddhism) has played an extremely prominent and dynamic role in Buddhist history, particularly in East Asia. Over the course of approximately two thousand years, Buddhist ideas and practices have shaped Chinese culture in a wide variety of areas, including art, politics, literature, philosophy, medicine, and material culture.
The translation of a large body of Indian Buddhist scriptures into Chinese and the inclusion of these translations together with works composed in China into a printed canon had far-reaching implications for the dissemination of Buddhism throughout the Chinese cultural sphere, including Korea, Japan, Ryukyu Islands and Vietnam. Chinese Buddhism is also marked by the interaction between Indian and Chinese religion which includes Taoism.
From medieval times on, various legends circulated in China telling of the presence of Buddhism on Chinese soil in very ancient times. Nonetheless, the scholarly consensus is that Buddhism first came to China in the first century of the Common Era, that is, in the Han Dynasty through missionaries from India. From that time on, Buddhism played a significant role in Chinese history up to and including modern times.
Faxian (337 – c. 422) was a Chinese Buddhist monk who travelled by foot from China to India, visiting many sacred Buddhist sites in what are now Xinjiang, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka between 399-412 to acquire Buddhist texts. His journey is described in his important travelogue, A Record of Buddhist Kingdoms, Being an Account by the Chinese Monk Fa-Xian of his Travels in India and Ceylon in Search of the Buddhist Books of Discipline. Antiquated transliterations of his name include Fa-Hien and Fa-hsien.
Faxian visited India in the early fifth century. He is said to have walked all the way from China across icy desert and rugged mountain passes. He entered India from the northwest and reached Pataliputra. He took back with him Buddhist texts and images sacred to Buddhism.
Faxian's visit to India occurred during the reign of Chandragupta II. He is also renowned for his pilgrimage to Lumbini, the birthplace of Gautama Buddha (modern Nepal). Faxian claimed that demons and dragons were the original inhabitants of Sri Lanka.
Sri Lanka (/sriːˈlɑːŋkə, -ˈlæŋkə/ or i/ʃriː-/;Sinhalese - ශ්රී ලංකාව, Tamil Ilaṅkai), officially the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka and known from the beginning of British colonial rule until 1972 as Ceylon (/sᵻˈlɒnˌ seɪ-ˌ siː-/), is an island country in South Asia near south-east India.
Sri Lanka has maritime borders with India to the northwest and the Maldives to the southwest. Its documented history spans 3,000 years, with evidence of pre-historic human settlements dating back to at least 125,000 years. Its geographic location and deep harbours made it of great strategic importance from the time of the ancient Silk Road through to World War II.
A diverse and multicultural country, Sri Lanka is home to many religions, ethnic groups, and languages. In addition to the majority Sinhalese, it is home to large groups of Sri Lankan and Indian Tamils, Moors, Burghers, Malays, Kaffirs and the aboriginal Vedda. Sri Lanka has a rich Buddhist heritage, and the first known Buddhist writings of Sri Lanka, the Pāli Canon, dates back to the Fourth Buddhist council in 29 BC. The country's recent history has been marred by a thirty-year civil war which decisively ended when Sri Lankan military defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in 2009.

I just can't get the ending right.
I'm so desperate tonight.
It seems only right to let the shadows lead the way.
If I could only just decide.
To let go of my insides.
I know that I'll never have to feel this way again.
And I'm caught in between.
My waking life and dreams.
Death's just as lonely as before.
I still remember you when.
This is all too familiar now.
I know I've seen this place before. But I just don't recall.
I don't feel like I'm awake. But I'm not dreaming.
What was it that I came here for?
They held us down.
But now we're breaking loose.
We swore that we'd let nothing stand in our way.
And when I'm gone.
I will come back to haunt you.
I'll still watch over you my love.
When you're on your way to me.
Don't forget the taste of me.
And don't forget the feel of me.
With my arms around you.
Those memories will never fade.
Like all the promises we made.
This is all too familiar now.
I know I've seen this place before. But I just don't recall.
I don't feel like I'm awake. But I'm not dreaming.
What was it that I came here for?
From below. The sun will rise.
And give us time to clear our heads.
The end is breathing down my neck.
Though hope is all that we have left.
The pain in understanding. Why we can't take it all back.
It's time to finally let go. Of everything we've known.
This is all too familiar now.
I know I've seen this place before. But I just don't recall.
I don't feel like I'm awake. But I'm not dreaming.
What was it that I came here for?
I swear I'll find you before I drift away.
This is all too familiar now.
I know I've seen this place before. But I just don't recall.
I don't feel like I'm awake. But I'm not dreaming.
