Mainland, Orkney
The Mainland is the main island of Orkney. Both of Orkney's burghs, Kirkwall and Stromness, lie on the island, which is also the heart of Orkney's ferry and air connections.
Seventy-five per cent of Orkney's population live on the island, which is more densely populated than the other islands of the archipelago. The lengthy history of the island's occupation has provided numerous important archaeological sites and the sandstone bedrock provides a platform for fertile farmland. There is an abundance of wildlife, especially seabirds.
Etymology
The name Mainland is a corruption of the Old Norse Meginland. Formerly the island was also known as Hrossey meaning "Horse Island". The island is sometimes referred to as "Pomona" (or "Pomonia"), a name that stems from a sixteenth-century mis-translation by George Buchanan and which has rarely been used locally, although it is retained in the name of the Pomona Inn at Finstown in the parish of Firth, as well as a local cafe in the capital of Kirkwall also known as the Pomona.

Orkney
Orkney /ˈɔːrkni/ (Scottish Gaelic: Arcaibh), also known as the Orkney Islands, is an archipelago in the Northern Isles of Scotland, United Kingdom. Situated off the north coast of Great Britain, Orkney is 16 kilometres (10 mi) north of the coast of Caithness and comprises approximately 70 islands, of which 20 are inhabited. The largest island, Mainland, often referred to as "the Mainland", has an area of 523.25 square kilometres (202 sq mi), making it the sixth-largest Scottish island and the tenth-largest island in the British Isles. The largest settlement and administrative centre is Kirkwall.
The name "Orkney" dates back to the 1st century BC or earlier, and the islands have been inhabited for at least 8,500 years. Originally occupied by Mesolithic and Neolithic tribes and then by the Picts, Orkney was invaded and forcibly annexed by Norway in 875 and settled by the Norse. The Scottish Parliament then re-annexed the earldom to the Scottish Crown in 1472, following the failed payment of a dowry for James III's bride, Margaret of Denmark. Orkney contains some of the oldest and best-preserved Neolithic sites in Europe, and the "Heart of Neolithic Orkney" is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

North Ronaldsay sheep
The North Ronaldsay is a breed of sheep living on North Ronaldsay, the northernmost of the Orkney Islands, Scotland. They are one survivor of a type of sheep formerly found across the islands of Orkney and Shetland (the other is the Shetland), belonging to the Northern European short-tailed sheep group of breeds.
They are notable for living almost entirely on seaweed for several months of the year, except for a short lambing season – this is the only forage available to them, as they are confined to the shoreline by a 6 feet (1.8 m) tall dry-stone wall which encloses the whole island. The semi feral flock on North Ronaldsay is confined to the foreshore for most of the year to conserve the limited grazing inland. This breed is raised primarily for wool.
The Rare Breeds Survival Trust lists this breed as "vulnerable," with about 600 registered breeding females in the United Kingdom in Spring 2014.
Wool
Wool from the sheep is spun in Lanarkshire on the Scottish mainland and returned to Orkney for sale. However a small woollen mill now has a processing operation on North Ronaldsay. This mill processes the majority of Island-produced fleeces and supplies fibre for felters and spinners, as well as spinning yarn for knitters, many of whom live in Orkney producing fine clothing and other woollen goods for sale throughout Orkney.

Orkney set to say goodbye to the Ness of Brodgar
After 20 years, excavation work at Orkney’s Ness of Brodgar will come to a close at the end of this week (16th August). Over the last two decades, this sprawling dig in the heart of Orkney’s World Heritage Site has become one of the most important archaeological projects in the world. It has revealed a huge complex of Neolithic buildings covering three hectares, with more lying undisturbed across this ancient landscape. Finds have included beautiful decorated and painted stones, polished axe heads, carved stone balls, and even human and animal bones. But more than that, the excavation has changed the way we think about Neolithic Orkney. After 20 years, excavation work at Orkney’s Ness of Brodgar will come to a close at the end of this week (16th August).
Over the last two decades, this sprawling dig in the heart of Orkney’s World Heritage Site has become one of the most important archaeological projects in the world. It has revealed a huge complex of Neolithic buildings covering three hectares, with more lying undisturbed across this ancient landscape.
Finds have included beautiful decorated and painted stones, polished axe heads, carved stone balls, and even human and animal bones. But more than that, the excavation has changed the way we think about Neolithic Orkney.
Before the 2024 dig began, it was decided that this summer season would be the last on site, with work reaching a logical stopping point. Instead of covering it with plastic wrap and tyres, ready for next year, the Ness of Brodgar will also be filled in with earth and returned to the green field it used to be, in hibernation once more. This will protect the fragile stonework here, which isn’t as durable as the beach stone used to build Skara Brae, giving the next generation of archaeologists the chance to dig down into the secrets of the Ness in the future.
The focus will move on to analysis and research of the finds taken from the site over the years, to help build on that understanding of ancient Orkney and its role in prehistory across northern Europe.
It will be strange to start next summer knowing that the Ness of Brodgar won’t be at the heart of things, for locals, visitors, and archaeologists. But this incredible site won’t be forgotten.

Welcome to the Orkney Isles! This archipelago sits off the northeast tip of Scotland and can be reached by flight or ferry. About 70 islands make up Orkney, but only 20 are inhabited. During our week in Orkney we visited Mainland, Hoy, and Sanday. Each has a unique character, and we loved seeing how the landscape and island vibe changed across the isles.
Mainland is home to the islands' capital, Kirkwall, and is the largest and most populated of the isles. It's also where most people's journey to Orkney starts, and has plenty to keep you busy for a few days. We spent our time here visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and the Standing Stones of Stenness (all dating from around 5000 years ago!), enjoying coastal walks, and learning about Orkney's fascinating wartime history.
On Hoy we spent a couple of nights at the open bothy at stunning Rackwick Bay, hiking to the Old Man of Hoy (one of Scotland's most famous sea stacks and a magnet for climbers), and generally soaking up the atmosphere on this Highlands-esque island.
Our final 2 days were spent on Sanday, the largest of the North Isles and home to Orkney's most spectacular beaches. Tresness Beach was our favourite, a stunning expanse of white sand backed by towering dunes. We explored the 5000 year old Quoyness Chambered Cairn, slipped and slided our way across seaweed at low tide towards Start Point Lighthouse, and spotted the remnants of the B98 German Destroyer, washed up on Sanday over 100 years ago.

After 20 years, excavation work at Orkney’s Ness of Brodgar will come to a close at the end of this week (16th August).
Over the last two decades, this sprawling dig in the heart of Orkney’s World Heritage Site has become one of the most important archaeological projects in the world. It has revealed a huge complex of Neolithic buildings covering three hectares, with more lying undisturbed across this ancient landscape.
Finds have included beautiful decorated and painted stones, polished axe heads, carved stone balls, and even human and animal bones. But more than that, the excavation has changed the way we think about Neolithic Orkney.
Before the 2024 dig began, it was decided that this summer season would be the last on site, with work reaching a logical stopping point. Instead of covering it with plastic wrap and tyres, ready for next year, the Ness of Brodgar will also be filled in with earth and returned to the green field it used to be, in hibernation once more. This will protect the fragile stonework here, which isn’t as durable as the beach stone used to build Skara Brae, giving the next generation of archaeologists the chance to dig down into the secrets of the Ness in the future.
The focus will move on to analysis and research of the finds taken from the site over the years, to help build on that understanding of ancient Orkney and its role in prehistory across northern Europe.
It will be strange to start next summer knowing that the Ness of Brodgar won’t be at the heart of things, for locals, visitors, and archaeologists. But this incredible site won’t be forgotten.

Welcome to the Orkney Isles! This archipelago sits off the northeast tip of Scotland and can be reached by flight or ferry. About 70 islands make up Orkney, but only 20 are inhabited. During our week in Orkney we visited Mainland, Hoy, and Sanday. Each has a unique character, and we loved seeing how the landscape and island vibe changed across the isles.
Mainland is home to the islands' capital, Kirkwall, and is the largest and most populated of the isles. It's also where most people's journey to Orkney starts, and has plenty to keep you busy for a few days. We spent our time here visiting the UNESCO World Heritage Sites of Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and the Standing Stones of Stenness (all dating from around 5000 years ago!), enjoying coastal walks, and learning about Orkney's fascinating wartime history.
On Hoy we spent a couple of nights at the open bothy at stunning Rackwick Bay, hiking to the Old Man of Hoy (one of Scotland's most famous sea stacks and a magnet for climbers), and generally soaking up the atmosphere on this Highlands-esque island.
Our final 2 days were spent on Sanday, the largest of the North Isles and home to Orkney's most spectacular beaches. Tresness Beach was our favourite, a stunning expanse of white sand backed by towering dunes. We explored the 5000 year old Quoyness Chambered Cairn, slipped and slided our way across seaweed at low tide towards Start Point Lighthouse, and spotted the remnants of the B98 German Destroyer, washed up on Sanday over 100 years ago.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.
Mainland, Orkney
The Mainland is the main island of Orkney. Both of Orkney's burghs, Kirkwall and Stromness, lie on the island, which is also the heart of Orkney's ferry and air connections.
Seventy-five per cent of Orkney's population live on the island, which is more densely populated than the other islands of the archipelago. The lengthy history of the island's occupation has provided numerous important archaeological sites and the sandstone bedrock provides a platform for fertile farmland. There is an abundance of wildlife, especially seabirds.
Etymology
The name Mainland is a corruption of the Old Norse Meginland. Formerly the island was also known as Hrossey meaning "Horse Island". The island is sometimes referred to as "Pomona" (or "Pomonia"), a name that stems from a sixteenth-century mis-translation by George Buchanan and which has rarely been used locally, although it is retained in the name of the Pomona Inn at Finstown in the parish of Firth, as well as a local cafe in the capital of Kirkwall also known as the Pomona.
