Agent Orange—or Herbicide Orange (HO)—is one of the herbicides and defoliants used by the U.S. military as part of its herbicidal warfare program, Operation Ranch Hand, during the Vietnam War from 1961 to 1971. It was a mixture of equal parts of two herbicides, 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D.
During the late 1940s and 1950s, the US and British collaborated on development of herbicides with potential applications in warfare. Some of those products were brought to market as herbicides. The British were the first to employ herbicides and defoliants to destroy the crops, bushes, and trees of communist insurgents in Malaya during the Malayan Emergency. These operations laid the groundwork for the subsequent use of Agent Orange and other defoliant formulations by the US.
In mid-1961, President Ngo Dinh Diem of South Vietnam asked the United States to conduct aerial herbicide spraying in his country. In August of that year, the South Vietnamese Air Force initiated herbicide operations with American help. But Diem's request launched a policy debate in the White House and the State and Defense Departments. However, U.S. officials considered using it, pointing out that the British had already used herbicides and defoliants during the Malayan Emergency in the 1950s. In November 1961, President John F. Kennedy authorized the start of Operation Ranch Hand, the codename for the U.S. Air Force's herbicide program in Vietnam.

My dear American friend Angela Rauscher returned to volunteer with the Vietnam Volunteer Network at Go Vap orphanage. Angela's first time was in 2010 & it was so wonderful to finally met Angela in 2011 as we had only corresponded via email & Skype. When meeting Angela, it was like meeting a soul sister and we have a strong bond where are thoughts and lives have been very similar. Finally the two if us were volunteering at my old orphanage (Go Vap) & helping the sick & disabled children, which is where the need to volunteer is. In this video Angela is spending time doing basic physiotherapy for Hien who is approximately 11 yrs old & she is in the late stages of hydrocephalus. As I was adopted & sent to London, England, I do not celebrate Thanksgiving as that's an American celebration. However, I truly loved participating in Thanksgiving as during my time in Da Nang, I was made to feel like part of the family & met a lot of amazing people who gave of themselves every day. Thank you to our following donors, without your help I would not be able to help these Agent Orange victims: Vietnam Volunteer Network donors, Angela Rauscher (& work colleagues), Reaching Out & Artists For Orphans A special thank you to Angela, Chuck & Ms. Hien! You can read more about my experience on my blog. http://kimnguyenbrowne.wordpress.com/2012/01/13/thanksgiving-in-da-nang/ I you would like to volunteer or donate to help the Agent Orange victims we support, please email info@vietna...

36 years after the War there are still casualties of War & it is heroes like Project Renew who help when & where it matters. So, I was very excited to finally meet the the wonderful team from Project Renew - Hien Ngo, Nguyen Phu & Chuck Searcy. These lovely gentlemen took time out of their day to show Angela Rauscher & I what heroes do on a daily basis in the Quang Tri Province. We could see how well organised their organisation was; from planning ahead & teaching children about land mine safety, programmes on educating people on cluster bombs, clearing land mines & helping land mine victims as well as creating programmes to help these victims with sustainable living, such as cows & mushrooms. I was very moved when they introduced me to Mr.Pham Quy Tuan & his family. Mr Pham Quy Tuan los...
During the 35 year anniversary since the American War in Vietnam ended a few of us adoptees from around the world congregated for a reunion in Vietnam. A Care Day was arranged at Go Vap orphanage on April 10th 2010. We arranged a tour of the orphanage & delivered aid; such as books, toys, stationary, clothes, medical aid, inflatable air beds, vitamins, Sudocrem, toothpaste & toothbrushes for the kids. This was an emotional event for some of us adoptees, some had never returned to Vietnam or had not visited an orphanage before. My personal belief is that when you are an orphan yourself & know you were also in the same situation as these babies; seeing all of them in the steel cots that we would have slept in, then of course it can be emotional & bring a sense of where we all came from...
