Joseph Wright of Derby. An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump. The Art of Gothic Documentary clip.
Joseph Wright of Derby was best known for his paintings of industrial scenes, and for his dramatic use of lighting – furnace light, candlelight. He painted hard-bitten toil in the workshops and the forges of the Industrial Revolution.
A travelling scientist is shown demonstrating the formation of a vacuum by withdrawing air from a flask containing a white cockatoo, though common birds like sparrows would normally have been used. Air pumps were developed in the 17th century and were relatively familiar by Wright's day. The artist's subject is not scientific invention, but a human drama in a night-time setting.
The bird will die if the demonstrator continues to deprive it of oxygen, and Wright leaves us in doubt as to whether or not the cockatoo will be reprieved. The painting reveals a wide range of individual reactions, from the frightened children, through the reflective philosopher, the excited interest of the youth on the left, to the indifferent young lovers concerned only with each other.
The figures are dramatically lit by a single candle, while in the window the moon appears. On the table in front of the candle is a glass containing a skull.

Joseph Wright of Derby
Joseph Wright (3 September 1734 – 29 August 1797), styled Joseph Wright of Derby, was an English landscape and portrait painter. He has been acclaimed as "the first professional painter to express the spirit of the Industrial Revolution".
Wright is notable for his use of Chiaroscuro effect, which emphasises the contrast of light and dark, and for his paintings of candle-lit subjects. His paintings of the birth of science out of alchemy, often based on the meetings of the Lunar Society, a group of very influential scientists and industrialists living in the English Midlands, are a significant record of the struggle of science against religious values in the period known as the Age of Enlightenment.
Many of Wright's paintings and drawings are owned by Derby City Council, and are on display at the Derby Museum and Art Gallery.
Life
Joseph Wright was born in Irongate, Derby. Deciding to become a painter, Wright went to London in 1751 and for two years studied under Thomas Hudson, the master of Joshua Reynolds. After painting portraits for a while at Derby, Wright again worked as an assistant to Hudson for fifteen months. In 1753 he returned to and settled in Derby and varied his work in portraiture by the production of the subjects with strong chiaroscuro under artificial light, with which his name is chiefly associated, and by landscape painting. Wright also spent a productive period in Liverpool, from 1768 to 1771, painting portraits. These included pictures of a number of prominent citizens and their families.

Joseph
"Joseph" is a masculine given name originating from Hebrew, recorded in the Hebrew Bible, as יוֹסֵף, Standard Hebrew Yossef, Tiberian Hebrew and Aramaic Yôsēp̄. In Arabic, including in the Qur'an, the name is spelled يوسف or Yūsuf. The name can be translated from Hebrew יהוה להוסיף YHWH Lhosif as signifying "JEHOVAH will increase/add".
In the Old Testament, Joseph is Jacob's eleventh son and Rachel's first (Yossef ben-Yaakov in the Jewish Bible). In the New Testament, Joseph is the husband of Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the New Testament there is another Joseph as well, Joseph of Arimathea, a secret disciple of Jesus who supplied the tomb in which Jesus was buried.
The form "Joseph" is used mostly in English, French and German-speaking countries. The name has enjoyed significant popularity in its many forms in numerous countries, and Joseph was one of the two names, along with Robert, to have remained in the top 10 boys' names list in the US from 1925 to 1972. It is especially common in contemporary Israel, as either "Yossi" or "Yossef", and in Italy, where the name "Giuseppe" was the most common male name in the 20th century.

Joseph Wright of Derby. An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump. The Art of Gothic Documentary clip.
Joseph Wright of Derby was best known for his paintings of industrial scenes, and for his dramatic use of lighting – furnace light, candlelight. He painted hard-bitten toil in the workshops and the forges of the Industrial Revolution.
A travelling scientist is shown demonstrating the formation of a vacuum by withdrawing air from a flask containing a white cockatoo, though common birds like sparrows would normally have been used. Air pumps were developed in the 17th century and were relatively familiar by Wright's day. The artist's subject is not scientific invention, but a human drama in a night-time setting.
The bird will die if the demonstrator continues to deprive it of oxygen, and Wright leaves us in doubt as to whether or not the cockatoo will be reprieved. The painting reveals a wide range of individual reactions, from the frightened children, through the reflective philosopher, the excited interest of the youth on the left, to the indifferent young lovers concerned only with each other.
The figures are dramatically lit by a single candle, while in the window the moon appears. On the table in front of the candle is a glass containing a skull.

Visiting Joseph Wright's native town, Derby
We have always admired Mr Joseph Wright of Derby's monumental painting, A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery. Already as a teenager, this solemn image was a symbol for the romantic idea of critical thinking in my mind. To defy any predominant consensus by asking for evidence based knowledge, including ideas which are venerated in the mainstream society, is by all means a heroic conduct; To rectify groundless prejudice should be an important virtue in a society. In July 2016, we visited Derby and its neighbouring towns in England. We enjoyed its Victorian atmosphere, as well as the cultural attractions.

We have always admired Mr Joseph Wright of Derby's monumental painting, A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery. Already as a teenager, this solemn image was a symbol for the romantic idea of critical thinking in my mind. To defy any predominant consensus by asking for evidence based knowledge, including ideas which are venerated in the mainstream society, is by all means a heroic conduct; To rectify groundless prejudice should be an important virtue in a society.

Presenter Eleanor Nairne, an art historian and curator, plays a statue in a magical gallery, who comes to life after closing time and pulls viewers headfirst into paintings like LS Lowry's Britain at Play, Andy Warhol's Marilyn Diptych and Henri Rousseau's Surprised. Joseph Wright of Derby was best known for his paintings of industrial scenes, and for his dramatic use of lighting – furnace light, candlelight. He painted hard-bitten toil in the workshops and the forges of the Industrial Revolution.
A travelling scientist is shown demonstrating the formation of a vacuum by withdrawing air from a flask containing a white cockatoo, though common birds like sparrows would normally have been used. Air pumps were developed in the 17th century and were relatively familiar by Wright's day. The artist's subject is not scientific invention, but a human drama in a night-time setting.
The bird will die if the demonstrator continues to deprive it of oxygen, and Wright leaves us in doubt as to whether or not the cockatoo will be reprieved. The painting reveals a wide range of individual reactions, from the frightened children, through the reflective philosopher, the excited interest of the youth on the left, to the indifferent young lovers concerned only with each other.
The figures are dramatically lit by a single candle, while in the window the moon appears. On the table in front of the candle is a glass containing a skull.
