Owen Ramsay Nares (11 August 1888 in Maiden Erlegh, Berkshire, England – 30 July 1943 in Brecon, Brecknockshire, Wales) had a long stage and film career. Besides his acting career, he was the author of Myself, and Some Others (1925).
Educated at Reading School, Nares was encouraged by his mother to become an actor, and in 1908 he received his training from actress Rosina Filippi. The following year, he was playing bit parts in West End productions, including the St. James’s Theatre and the Pinero’s Mid Channel. Over the next few years, as his reputation grew, he performed with many of the outstanding actors of the era including Beerbohm Tree, Constance Collier and Marion Terry.
In 1914, Nares appeared in Dandy Donovan, the first of the 25 silent films in which he appeared. The early 1920s was his golden period and he was the male lead opposite such actresses as Gladys Cooper, Fay Compton, Madge Titheradge and Daisy Burrell. His stage career also continued to flourish.
Lily Elsie (born Elsie Hodder; 8 April 1886 – 16 December 1962) was a popular English actress and singer during the Edwardian era, best known for her starring role in the hit London premiere of Franz Lehár's operetta The Merry Widow.
Beginning as a child star in the 1890s, Elsie built her reputation in several successful Edwardian musical comedies before her great success in The Merry Widow, opening in 1907. Afterwards, she starred in several more successful operettas and musicals. Admired for her beauty and charm on stage, Elsie became one of the most photographed women of Edwardian times.
Elsie was born in Armley, West Yorkshire. Her mother, Charlotte Elizabeth Hodder (1864–1922), was a dressmaker who operated a lodging-house. She married William Thomas Cotton, a theatre worker, in 1891, and Elsie became Elsie Cotton. The family lived in Manchester. Elsie was also the niece of Wilfred Cotton, who married actress Ada Reeve.
Joyce Irene Grenfell, OBE (née Phipps; 10 February 1910 – 30 November 1979) was a British comedienne, actress and, in her time, one of the country's best loved entertainers, immortalised in roles such as the gym mistress Miss Gossage in The Happiest Days of Your Life and Ruby Gates in the St Trinian's films. She achieved success as a writer and performer of songs and monologues at a time when it was unusual for a woman of her social background to work.
Born in Montpelier Square in Knightsbridge, London, Joyce was the daughter of architect Paul Phipps (1880–1953), the grandson of Charles Paul Phipps and a second cousin of Ruth Draper. Her mother was an American socialite, Nora Langhorne (1889–1955), one of five daughters of Chiswell Langhorne, an American railway millionaire. Nancy Astor, née Nancy Langhorne, was one of her mother's sisters, and had also married in England. Grenfell often visited her at Astor's home of Cliveden and later lived on a cottage on the estate ('Parr's'), a mile from the main house, in the early years of her marriage.
Stanley Lupino (15 May 1893 – 10 June 1942) was an English actor, dancer, singer, librettist, director and short story writer, who began life as Stanley Richard Lupino Hook. During the 1930s, Lupino appeared in a successful series of musical comedy films, often based on his already popular stage shows.
Lupino began his career as an acrobat. He made his first stage appearance at the age of 6 as a monkey in King Klondyke. After prize fighting for a while, he toured with the Albert and Edmunds troupe of acrobats, the Brother Luck and other vaude units. In 1910 he appeared in Dick Whittington, and 4 years later was signed by his brother, Barry, for a role in Sleeping Beauty. He first became known as a music hall performer and played in pantomimes at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. In 1920 and 1921 he appeared in Wylie & Tate pantomimes at Sheffield and Cardiff with Daisy Burrell. He appeared with Elsie Janis in Hello, America and wrote the words for Hold My Hand.
Lupino wrote and performed in several shows, including Phi-Phi (1922) and From Dover Street to Dixie (1923) at the London Pavilion. In 1926-'27 he appeared on Broadway in Naughty Riquette and The Nightingale, returning to England to play at the Gaiety Theatre in London, including Love Lies (1929), Hold My Hand (1932), and Sporting Love (1934), which ran for 302 performances. He also wrote and starred in So this is Love (1929) at Drury Lane and The Love Race. He also performed extensively for BBC Radio. Later, he turned to screenwriting and films, although he also continued on stage in works like Lady Behave (1941) which co-starred Sally Gray.
Renate Müller (26 April 1906 – 7 October 1937) was a German singer and actress in both silent films and sound films, as well as on stage.
One of the most successful actresses in German films from the early 1930s, she was courted by the Nazi Party to appear in films that promoted their ideals, but refused. Her sudden death at the age of 31 was initially attributed to epilepsy, but after the end of World War II, witnesses suggested that she had been murdered by Gestapo officers, although another theory contends that she committed suicide. The true circumstances of her death remain unknown.
Born in Munich, Germany, Müller entered films in the late 1920s in Berlin and quickly became popular. A blue-eyed blonde, she was considered to be one of the great beauties of her day and along with Marlene Dietrich was seen to embody fashionable Berlin society. She starred in more than twenty German films, including Viktor und Viktoria (1933), one of her biggest successes, which was remade decades later as Victor Victoria with Julie Andrews. After making Sunshine Susie (1932) in England, she returned to Germany and was delayed by anti-German French officials for a short time in Paris. The incident was used by Dennis Wheatley as a basis for his short story, "Espionage". The story and a short discussion of the incident are included in Wheatley's short story collection Mediterranean Nights.

Theatrical entrepreneur George Edwardes, having secured the English rights of Franz Lehar's successful operetta, The Merry Widow (first produced at the Theater an der Wien, Vienna, on 30 December 1905), took one of the biggest gambles of his career in casting Lily Elsie (1886-1962) in the title role when the piece was first shown to a British audience at Daly's Theatre, Leicester Square, London, on 8 June 1907. Although experienced, Miss Elsie until then had only played supporting parts and was extremely nervous about taking on the responsibilities of a leading lady. Edwardes's instincts were correct, however, and that night Lily Elsie became a star. The American actor Joseph Coyne was her leading man. On the second presentation of July 22, 1940, Forecast offered a mystery/horror show titled Suspense. With the co-operation of his producer, Walter Wanger, Alfred Hitchcock received the honor of directing his first radio show for the American public. The condition agreed upon for Hitchcock's appearance was that CBS make a pitch to the listening audience about his and Wanger's latest film, Foreign Correspondent. To add flavor to the deal, Wanger threw in Edmund Gwenn and Herbert Marshall as part of the package. All three men (including Hitch) would be seen in the upcoming film, which was due for a theatrical release the next month. Both Marshall and Hitchcock decided on the same story to bring to the airwaves, which happened to be a favorite of both of them: Marie Belloc Lowndes' "The Lodger...
Everybody knows everybody in a small town
All around
And there ain't nothing wrong with that
I'm not the type that wants to live a life on solid ground
Tied down
That's why I keep my suitcase packed
Sometimes,
The things you love the most
You gotta let em go
But in the end you know I'm coming home to you
I wanna feel the sun on my back in California
Run with the bulls out in Barcelona
Cross the desert and then I'm gonna do it all over again
I wanna see the Taj Mahal and the Eiffle Tower
Stand in the ocean and feel the power
I wanna go where I've never been
White Picket Fences can't hold me, can't hold me in
Baby when you fell in love with me
You got a little more than you bargained for
But you just need to understand
I'm not saying that everytime you turn around,
I'll be runnin straight for the front door
No, I just don't want to lose who I am
You know, I love you and me
But I gotta be true to me
So I can be true to you
I wanna feel the sun on my back in California
Run with the bulls out in Barcelona
Cross the desert and then I'm gonna do it all over again
I wanna see the Taj Mahal and the Eiffle Tower
Stand in the ocean and feel the power
I wanna go where I've never been
White Picket Fences can't hold me, can't hold me in
Can't hold me, can't hold me in
Sometimes,
The things you love the most
You gotta let em go
But in the end you know I'm coming home
Coming home to you
I wanna feel the sun on my back in California
Run with the bulls out in Barcelona
Cross the desert and then I'm gonna do it all over again
I wanna see the Taj Mahal and the Eiffle Tower
Stand in the ocean and feel the power
I wanna go where I've never been
White Picket Fences can't hold me, can't hold me in
Can't hold me, can't hold me in
