Isaac Herzog: "
Good Morning, good
Morning Madam Secretary, we are very happy that you are here with us, not only as friends, but as colleagues and as political leaders.
You are here in a week where we celebrated 48 years to the reunification of
Jerusalem, and I can promise you as the
Leader of the Opposition, that the Opposition, which is lead by me is adamant in trying to reach a peaceful agreement in the region between us and the
Palestinians. Most importantly, and I cannot make it more clear than saying that my party, the party which was lead by
Yitzhak Rabin, who was assassinated for the quest for
peace, sees peace in the region of utmost priority.
However, and we welcome your efforts, we welcome the
European efforts in the region, we also have to speak some words as friends, at the time we have the deep feeling here in Israel that there are voices in
Europe who don't understand the inherent security needs of Israel, and automatically side with the
Arab side or with the Palestinians, without understanding the complexity of the needs of Israel to make sure that in any agreement for a
Two-State Solution, the underlying rule will be preserving Israel security.
And may I just add that this feeling is coupled by the fact that many international resolutions, such as the one in
Lebanon, following the 2nd
Lebanon War, or relating to other issues in the region, are not heard to, and today we see
Hezbollah with over
100 missiles in the region, aimed at Israel, or we see what is happening in
Gaza, whereby the Hamas is trying to - again - dig tunnels under our citizens on the borderline with Gaza.
So, all in all, you have many challenges, we welcome you all-heartedly, I can promise that the Opposition will support ANY process which will be advanced by the Parties, and the most important rule of the game has to be direct negotiations between us and the Palestinians.
Thank you very, very much."
Federica Mogherini: "Thank you very much. For me it's very important to meet you again, not only, as you said, as a friend, as a political leader, but also as the leader of the Opposition that in this country has a very important role to play, to meet you so early after the last developments. I was very much committed to come as early as possible, as you know, because we've discussed that, because I know that Europe has roles to play here. One of these roles is to strengthen the friendship among the
European people and the
Israeli people, to make both understand that we have a lot in common, not only in the past, but also in the present and in the future, and to share this complexity. Be sure that we know very well that security and peace here have to go hand in hand, and that it's the purpose of our efforts. We want security and peace, we believe that security without peace is an illusion, and that peace without security will not stand. So we know that these are 2 sides of the same coin, and my personal visit here is to see if we have the conditions, together with others in the international community, the
Americans, the rest of the
Quartet, some key
Arab countries, to help, to facilitate, to see if there is a space, as you said, for resuming talks in the direction of a
Two-State solution, that could be mutually beneficial, for Israel security and peace, for the
Palestinian people, to avoid that the situation could develop in a negative direction.
And I count on not only the role of the Opposition, not only your personal commitment and dedication to that, I know how strong it is,
I remember we were together in Tel-Aviv just one year ago at the
Memorial of (
Yitzhak) Rabin. So I know your personal commitment, and I count on your full support and trying to move forward in the interest, not only of the
Israeli and the Palestinian people, but of all of us
Europeans. Thank you very much."
