The Northern line is a London Underground line, coloured black on the Tube map. The section between Stockwell and Borough opened in 1890, and is the oldest section of deep-level tube line on the network.
For most of its length it is a deep-level tube line. There were about 252,310,000 passenger journeys in 2011/12 on the Northern line, making it the second busiest line on the Underground. (It was the busiest from 2003 to 2010.) It is unique in having two different routes through central London – the Charing Cross branch, serving the central part of zone 1, and the Bank branch, serving the eastern part of that zone. Despite its name, it does not serve the northernmost stations on the network, though it does serve the southernmost station (Morden), as well as 16 of the system's 29 stations south of the River Thames. There are 50 stations on the line, of which 36 have platforms below ground.
The line has a complicated history, and the current complex arrangement of two northern branches, two central branches and the southern branch reflects its genesis as three separate railway companies, combined in the 1920s and 1930s. An extension in the 1920s used a route originally planned by a fourth company. Abandoned plans from the 1920s, to extend the line further southwards, and then northwards in the 1930s, would have incorporated parts of the routes of two further companies. From the 1930s to the 1970s, the tracks of a seventh company were also managed as a branch of the Northern line. An extension from Kennington to Battersea is now planned, which will give the line a second southern branch to go with its two northern and central branches, or may see the line split into two distinct lines with their own identities.
London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.
Northern may refer to the following:

Charing Cross /ˌtʃærɪŋ ˈkrɒs/ denotes the junction of Strand, Whitehall and Cockspur Street, just south of Trafalgar Square in central London. It gives its name to several landmarks, including Charing Cross railway station, one of the main London rail terminals.
Charing Cross is named after the Eleanor cross that stood on the site, in what was once the hamlet of Charing. The site of the cross has been occupied since 1675 by an equestrian statue of King Charles I. A loose Victorian replica of the medieval cross, the Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross, was erected a short distance to the east outside the railway station.
Until 1931, "Charing Cross" referred to the part Whitehall between Great Scotland Yard and Trafalgar Square. At least one property retains a "Charing Cross" postal address: Drummonds Bank, on the corner of Whitehall and The Mall, which is designated "49 Charing Cross" (not to be confused with Charing Cross Road).

This is the story of a town-planning cock-up known as the Northern Heights Plan which, if completed, would have meant miles of extra houses and tube stations to the North West of London.
This is a short film about some Northern line trains at Chalk Farm station in the London borough of Camden. Chalk Farm is just one station north of Camden Town, which is a major Northern line hub with northbound branches to Edgware and High Barnet as well as southbound branches via Bank and Charing Cross. Chalk Farm station was opened in 1907 and is situated on the Edgware branch of the line. When the station opened, all trains ran to Charing Cross, but today southbound services also run via Bank. The station does not have escalators. There are either lifts or a staircase to reach the platforms. Another unique feature of the station is the long wedge-shaped station building at the intersection of Adelaide Road, Haverstock Hill and Chalk Farm Road. All trains on the northern line are ope...

The story of a chance encounter on London Underground's Northern Line (Morden to Edgware via Charing Cross). Made with footage from Google Street View. Written&Directed; by Ian. Produced by Ross. Sung by Abi. www.rosspowermusic.com
Northern Line is a short animation about a boy and his love of loud music on the train.
Part of a series of three, the conception of these television spots stems from nature, prosperity, fluidity and simplicity. An organic and natural mood combined with bright, warm tones and positive hues creates an uplifting feeling. The first in the series, this spot follows the brush stroke ‘path’ which is representative of the Northern Gateway Pipeline and takes us on a journey from Northern BC to the Pacific Ocean, tying into the campaign motto: “It’s a Path to our Future”. Given the sensitive nature of this topic, it was important to create a look and feel that was organic and not overly glossy. To create a truly organic look we crafted our own analog textures, which we photographed and then applied to our digital work. For example, the fish splash is a drop of watercolour paint blow...
A tarantula on a Saint Honorè cake, ok this is vintage Chandler but it sums up quite well the impression those poison candies must have made in the first MTV Italy magazine Sonic back in 1998. Aphex Twin e Chuck D thrown in the mix to draw attention on other issues. Two seasons spent investigating mediaforsaken sounds and places: Darlington, studio flats in Essex and the outer reaches of the Northern Line. We’re sorry but we can’t include THE CITY WITHIN featuring Peter Hammill(Van Der Graaf) and David Thomas(Pere Ubu). Two otherworldly gentlemen strolling and exchanging views on city gardens. The episode was never released due to a drastic change in the company’s policies. All films were made on the London underground exclusively on the Northern Line. As the subjects are faceless it makes it easier for the audience to relate to them leading to the question, does the male audience relate and feel uncomfortable at me speculatively putting them into this context of “prey” or object of homosexual desire? I'm dreaming on a night train
It's only been a light rain, and a darkened sky and a starry night
I'm humming on a cold train
I'm singing about the wreck of the Old 97
[CHORUS:]
And I'm walking through this city
I'll tell my story to the rain
And I won't come back no matter what you say
I'm feeling no pain
I don't care if I ever see your face again
I'm riding on a Northern Line
I got my money - but I got a lot of time to spend
[CHORUS:]
And I'm walking through this city
I'll tell my secret to the sky
And I won't come back no matter what you say
And I'm walking through this city
Yeah I'll tell my story to the rain
And I won't come back no matter what you say
