STORYLINE:
The man accused of being the leader of the operation to bomb two nightclubs on the Indonesian island of Bali last October, Ali Ghufron, has gone on trial.
Known as Mukhlas, he is the third key suspect to go before the courts charged with terrorism offences in connection with the Bali attack that killed 200 people, many of them western tourists.
Mukhlas is accused of planning, organising and providing the funding for the Bali bombings.
Prosecutors are expected to argue that he supervised the operation from its inception, checking the targets and delegating responsibilities to other members of the team.
But he is not accused of actually planting the bombs.
Mukhlas has told investigators that he was back in Java on the night in question.
He said he only found out the attack had gone ahead as planned by listening to the news on the radio.
Mukhlas, a teacher of Islam, has said he went to Pakistan in 1989, met Arab mujahedeen there, and joined them in Afghanistan where he claims he met Osama Bin Laden.
He is the older brother of Amrozi, accused of buying explosives and a van used in the bombings, and Ali Imron, accused of helping assemble the bombs to have driven the van that carried them.
More than 200 people died when bombs ripped through two nightclubs in one of Bali's busiest night spots.
Police believe a regional extremist group called Jemaah Islamiyah was behind the Bali plot.
They say Mukhlas is a senior commander of the organisation. But the indictment against him describes him simply as a religious teacher.
Jemaah Islamiyah is thought to want to set up a Muslim state across South-East Asia and the US links the group with al-Qaida.

STORYLINE:
Indonesia's Supreme Court has halved a three-year prison sentence passed on cleric Abu Bakar Bashir for forging identity papers, a court official said on Tuesday.
The verdict represents another legal victory for the country's leading Islamic radical, who was arrested shortly after the 2002 Bali bombings amid accusations he headed Jemaah Islamiyah, the al-Qaida linked regional terror group blamed for the blasts.
A court last September sentenced the 65-year-old cleric to four years in jail for treason and immigration offenses, but cleared him of the main charge of heading Jemaah Islamiyah.
In December, an appeals court overturned the treason conviction, but upheld the immigration conviction and his sentence was reduced to three years.
Lawyers and prosecutors both filed appeals to the Supreme Court.
On Tuesday, a clerk at the Supreme Court said Bashir's sentence had been reduced to one and-a-half years, but declined to give more details. He spoke on condition of anonymity.
Lawyers for Bashir said they had yet to be formally informed of the verdict, which means that their client will likely be released next month having been in detention since his arrest.
Bashir was the co-founder of an Islamic boarding school in Solo on the island of Java. The school taught dozens of young militants, several of which have been convicted in the Bali bombings.
Bashir was not charged in the Bali attack, which killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists, nor a suicide bombing last year at J.W. Marriott Hotel in Jakarta that killed nine people.
He has always denied any involvement in terrorism, but has refused to condemn the 32 militants convicted in the Bali bombings and repeatedly accuses the United States of waging war on Islam.
His case has been a sensitive issue for President Megawati Sukarnoputri, whose government has been seeking to root out terrorists without alienating mainstream Muslim opinion.

STORYLINE:
A terror suspect detained in Singapore told an Indonesian court on Thursday that Muslim cleric Abu Bakar Bashir heads the group blamed for the Bali bombings and linked the preacher to Osama bin Laden.
Faiz bin Abu Bakar Bafana, testifying via teleconference from Singapore in the trial of Bashir, also said that the cleric allegedly planned to assassinate Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
Bashir, the alleged head of the regional group Jemaah Islamiyah, is accused of treason and a series of church bombings on Christmas Eve 2000 that killed 19 people.
Bashir's lawyer, Mohammad Assegaf, objected to the televised testimony, claiming Bafana, who is in a Singapore prison, was forced to make it.
The defence team walked out of the court in protest as dozens of Bashir's supporters cheered.
Bafana, who is Malaysian and used to own a construction company, told the court he joined Jemaah Islamiyah in 1986 and that Bashir was at his swearing-in ceremony.
He said that at the time another man, Abdullah Sugkar, was the group's leader but that Bashir took over when Sugkar died in 2000.
Bafana said he visited Bashir at an unspecified date in the cleric's Indonesian hometown of Solo, on Java island, and was accompanied by Riduan Isamuddin, or Hambali, who is still at large and believed to be bin Laden's point man in Southeast Asia.
During the meeting, Hambali asked for Bashir's approval for bin Laden's terror programme, Bafana said. He did not elaborate.
Asked by prosecutors why Bashir wanted to kill Megawati, he said only: "Megawati was supported by Christians."

STORYLINE
The trial of the self-proclaimed military commander of the Southeast Asian militant network behind the Bali bombings continued on Tuesday in the Indonesian capital.
Prosecutors allege Abu Dujana, who was arrested in June on charges of illegal possession of explosives and firearms, led the armed branch of Jemaah Islamiyah.
Dujana is accused of various bombings in Indonesia and faces a possible death penalty.
He is charged with stockpiling weapons in the eastern Indonesian town of Poso, where in recent years Islamic militants have launched a series of bloody attacks on Christians and government workers.
Dujana, 37, has not been charged in the Bali bombings.
Wednesday's court session involved the defence responding to the charges that were read out in court last week.
Among the attacks attributed to Jemaah Islamiyah and affiliate groups are the 2002 bombings on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists; the 2003 and 2004 attacks on the J.W. Marriott Hotel and the Australian Embassy in Jakarta; and the 2005 triple suicide bombings on restaurants in Bali.
More than 240 people died in the bombings, some of which police say were carried out with the backing of al-Qaida.
Jemaah Islamiyah is believed to have suffered a severe setback with the arrest of hundreds of militants across Indonesia since the 2001 attacks in the United States.

STORYLINE:
The alleged leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah militant network went on trial in December in the Indonesian capital, ratcheting up the battle against radical Islam in the world's most populous Muslim nation.
Zarkasih, who is 45-years-old, was charged with conspiracy to commit attacks, harbouring fugitives and possession of illegal weapons and ammunition in a trial at the South Jakarta District Court.
He could face the death penalty if found guilty.
Zarkasih, who goes by a single name as well as several other aliases, was not required to enter a formal plea as his trial began.
During the hearing, the prosecutor, Totok Bambang said, "We charged him with the maximum primary charge which is the death penalty. The secondary charge is 15 years sentence in prison."
Ashludin, Zarkhasi's lawyer, said he would look into more depth, "the charges that have been put forward by the court," against his client.
Members and associates of Jemaah Islamiyah took part in the 2002 nightclub bombings on the resort island of Bali after coming under the influence of al-Qaida.
The attacks killed 202 people, most of them foreign tourists.
Zarkasih was arrested early this year on Java island along with Jemaah Islamiyah military commander Abu Dujana, who went on trial last week on the same charges.
Prosecutors accuse the two men of shipping weapons and explosives to Sulawesi island, which was the scene of a brutal war between Muslims and Christians between 1999 and 2003.
The pair are also alleged to have hidden Malaysian fugitive Noordin Top, who is believed to have been the mastermind of the Bali attacks as well as four other major strikes against Western targets in Indonesia, the last one also on Bali in 2005.
Zarkasih was also accused of directing attacks against Christians there.
Jemaah Islamiyah was formed in the late 1990s by Indonesians who had fought or trained in Afghanistan.
The group's leadership encouraged its members to train for jihad or holy war and sent fighters to the southern Philippines, but likely did not approve or know about the Bali operation or the other attacks in Indonesia, police and ex-members say.

STORYLINE
Prosecutors said on Monday that an Indonesian militant known as the "Demolition Man" should spend the rest of his life in prison for helping to build the car bomb used in the 2002 Bali nightclub attacks.
Umar Patek, a leading member of the al-Qaida-linked network Jemaah Islamiyah, was brought to the West Jakarta District Court for his trial, escorted by armoured vehicles.
He is the last key suspect to be tried in the blasts that killed 202 people, thrusting Indonesia onto the frontlines in the war on insurgency.
Many of the victims were foreign tourists, including 88 Australians and seven Americans.
Lead prosecutor told the West Jakarta District Court the 45-year-old militant should get a life term.
He said Patek was guilty of illegal weapons possession, helping and concealing insurgency, immigration violations and premeditated murder leading to massive casualties.
A verdict is not expected until next month.
It's still possible, but unlikely, that judges will decide to hand down the maximum penalty of death by firing squad.
Analysts, however, expect he will end up getting less than 20 years behind bars.
Patek, who was arrested last year in Pakistan, has denied playing a major role in assembling the massive car bomb that was the largest bomb used in the attack.
He said that job fell to Jemaah Islamiyah bomb-making masterminds, Azahari bin Husin and Dulmatin, both of whom have since been killed in police
raids.
The militant also insisted he was against the bombings from the start but didn't dare to speak out.
They were in theory were meant to avenge Western policies in the Palestinian territories.
Patek said he saw no connection between the original mission, fighting against the oppression of fellow Muslims, and the target, partying tourists.
Patek and his lawyers will respond to the prosecution's sentencing demand next week.
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has been hit by a string of attacks since the October 12, 2002, Bali bombings.
But all have been far less deadly, thanks in part, security experts say, to a relentless crackdown on Jemaah Islamiyah that has largely decimated their ranks.

The Indonesian militant Umar Patek attended the West Jakarta District Court on Thursday to read his final defence, in which he denied major involvement in the 2002 Bali nightclub attacks.
Earlier this month, prosecutors said Patek, should spend the rest of his life in prison for helping to build the car bomb used in the Bali attacks.
"I did not make a car bomb, vest bomb, or bomb package. My role in the Bali bombing was merely helping Sawad Aka Sarjio in mixing the explosives which was less than fifty kilograms," said Patek, whose real name is Hisyam bin Alizein.
Sarjio, also known as Sawad, has already been found guilty of helping organise planning meetings and preparing the explosives.

STORYLINE:
The Philippines military has said that it has killed Southeast Asia's most-wanted militant in a U.S.-backed airstrike.
Philippine troops have not yet recovered all the bodies from the dawn strike on a southern Philippine island, but military spokesman Col. Marcelo Burgos said the dead included Malaysian Zulkifi bin Hir, also known as Marwan, a top leader of the regional, al Qaida-linked Jemaah Islamiyah terror network.
Also killed in the strike were the leader of the Philippines-based Abu Sayyaf militants, Umbra Jumdail, and a Singaporean leader in Jemaah Islamiyah, Abdullah Ali, who used the guerrilla name Muawiyah, Burgos said.
"This is a big blow on the part of the Abu Sayyaf Group and with links to the Jemaah Islamiyah," Coloner Burgos said.
Forensic investigators could not immediately approach the heavily-forested mountain camp hit in the strike because the area remains under the control of another rebel group, Moro National Liberation Front, which signed a peace pact with the government in 1996, said regional military commander Maj. Gen. Noel Coballes.
He said that no one was captured following Thursday's airstrike and that some militants escaped and then returned to retrieve the bodies of those who died.
It is unclear if they also recovered the bodies of the three leaders, he said.
About 30 militants were in the camp near Parang town on Jolo Island, the stronghold of the Abu Sayyaf and their allies from the mostly Indonesian-based Jemaah Islamiyah, when it was bombarded by two OV10 aircraft , Coballes said.
The U.S. had offered a 5 (m) million US dollar reward for the capture of Marwan, a U.S.-trained engineer accused of involvement in a number of deadly bombings in the Philippines and in the training of new militants.
American counter-terrorism troops have helped ill-equipped Filipino troops track Marwan for years using satellite and drone surveillance.
About 600 U.S. special forces troops have been deployed in the southern Philippines since 2002, providing a crucial support for the Philippines' counter-terrorism operations.
If confirmed, Marwan's death would mark the most important success against regional terror network Jemaah Islamiyah since the January 2011 arrest of Indonesian suspect Umar Patek in Pakistan's garrison town of Abbottabad, where Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. commando attack four months later.
Patek and Marwan collaborated with the Abu Sayyaf in training militants in bomb-making skills, seeking funding locally and abroad and plotting attacks, including against American troops in the southern Philippines.
Marwan's death also would be a huge blow to the Abu Sayyaf's ability to recover from years of battle setbacks through fund-raising and training of new militants.

However, we should not let our guard down, but what we are doing now, as an SOP (standard operating procedure), is to raise our alert level for possible repercussions or maybe a retaliatory attack anywhere in the region, so we are prepared for this."

STORYLINE:
The Filipino National Security Adviser Roilo Golez has praised the arrest of Hambali, alleged to be al-Qaida's chief representative, bombing mastermind and operational planner in Asia.
He said the arrest was a big blow to the al-Qaida linked terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah and showed that international co-operation against terrorism was working.
Also known as Riduan Isamuddin, Hambali was arrested earlier this week in the central town of Ayutthaya on suspicion of plotting to stage a terrorist attack during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) leaders' summit in October.
Hambali is a prime suspect in the Bali bombings in Indonesia last year that killed 202 people, mostly Australian tourists and he is also suspected to have masterminded a series of deadly bombings in the Philippines.
Jemaah Islamiyah is also blamed for last week's bombing of the American-owned Marriott Hotel in Jakarta, in which 12 people were killed.

Top Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) leaders accused of instigating major terror attacks once taught or underwent
training at secret camps in the Philippines that remain a major concern despite government claims that they have been dismantled, a U.S. security analyst said Thursday.
The camps, mostly in remote southern strongholds of the Muslim separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), still produce small batches of would-be attackers that allow the al-Qaida-linked group to survive arrests and crackdowns, said Zachary Abuza, who has written extensively on terrorism.
A confidential Philippine government report obtained by The Associated Press says Filipino Muslim guerrillas have hosted terror training camps for militant groups from Indonesia and Malaysia, including Jemaah Islamiyah, for at least seven years _ a period when Southeast Asia was plagued by deadly bombings. The last batch of 19
new JI members finished last January, the report said.
The document indicated that JI founder Abdullah Sungkar, with the help of Hashim Salamat, the late leader of the MILF, set up a training camp within the MILF complex of Camp Abubakar, in Maguindanao, Central Mindanao. Training started in 1997.
The MILF has repeatedly denied any Jemaah Islamiyah links and has pledged to help the government hunt foreign terrorists to bolster peace talks.

STORYLINE:
Authorities in Indonesia released the militant cleric Abu Bakar Bashir on Wednesday in Jakarta, more than two years after he was imprisoned for conspiracy in the 2002 Bali bombings.
Bashir was greeted by jubilant supporters and mobbed by media and onlookers as walked to freedom.
The 68-year-old cleric, an alleged key leader of the al-Qaida-linked Southeast Asian militant group Jemaah Islamiyah, served 26 months for giving his blessing to the nightclub bombings, which killed 202 people, most of them foreign tourists.
About 150 of Bashir's supporters gathered at Jakarta's Cipinang prison for his release, which came about 45 minutes earlier than expected.
From the crushing hold of his followers, Bashir said he was "Thankful to Allah who has given me his blessing today, and taken away my burden all this time. I am truly thankful to Allah."
Bashir asked "all muslim to unite the islamic and strengthen the islamic brotherhood and work to establish the Sharia law (islamic law)."
The release raised concerns among Indonesian officials that he could energise the country's small, Islamic radical fringe.
A strident critic of the United States, Bashir is known for his fiery speeches.
Bashir, who has maintained his innocence, plans to return to the Islamic boarding school that he founded and retake his position at the head of his legal hardline Islamic organisation, the Council of Mujahedeen for Islamic Law Enforcement.
The US State Department also expressed deep disappointment about what it called Bashir's light sentence.
It was up to Indonesians and the Indonesian courts to interpret their own laws, it said.
Jemaah Islamiyah is accused of carrying out church bombings across Indonesia in 2000, the 2002 Bali bombings, attacks in the Indonesian capital in 2003 and 2004, and a triple suicide bombing on Bali last October.
The attacks together killed more than 260 people.
Bashir has little active support in Indonesia, where most Muslims follow a moderate form of the faith.
But some mainstream clerics and government officials have expressed sympathy for him, saying he is a victim of foreign meddling, and the media rarely dwell on his alleged Jemaah Islamiyah links.
No evidence has ever been presented linking him to the execution, preparation or commission of terrorist attacks, and most analysts agree he had little operational role within Jemaah Islamiyah.
He was arrested amid intense international pressure on Indonesia to crack down on militants.
Since then, it has arrested and convicted more than 150 terrorists, sentencing three to death.

STORYLINE:
An Indonesian militant was among those killed in a clash with Philippine troops that also killed five ranking Filipino members of the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf group off the country's southernmost province, an official said Sunday.
Philippine army and naval forces, backed by marines, killed the six militants, who were aboard a motor boat during a gun battle Saturday off Tawi Tawi province, officials said.
Among those killed was a suspected Indonesian terror suspect identified as Gufran, who had only one name and allegedly belonged to the Indonesian-based militant group Jemaah Islamiyah, said Marine Corps Public Information officer Lieutenant Colonel Ariel Caculitan.
Gufran, who used the alias Abu Samur, was a key aide of Dulmatin, a top Indonesian terror suspect who has hunted by troops in a months-long US-backed offensive on southern Jolo island, according to the official.
Jolo is near Tawi Tawi, which lies about 1,050 kilometres (656 miles) southwest of Manila.
His death bolsters military reports that Indonesian militants have taken refuge in the southern Philippines - scene of a decades-old separatist insurgency.
Caculitan told reporters that among the Filipino militants killed were top leaders Abu Hubaida and Judnam Jamalul, known by his alias Black Killer.
Jamalul was among 17 Abu Sayyaf leaders and members, including the group's chieftain, Khadaffy Janjalani, who are wanted by the United States for attacks on American citizens.
US and Philippine authorities have offered a reward of 20-thousand US dollars for Jamalul's capture.

STORYLINE
The alleged leader of the Jemaah Islamiyah (JI) militant network appeared in a court in the Indonesian capital on Wednesday.
Zarkasih, who goes by a single name, appeared for the second time at the South Jakarta District Court where his defence team entered their response to alleged charges against him of conspiracy to commit terror attacks, harbouring fugitives and the possession of illegal weapons and ammunition.
The 45-year-old could face the death penalty if found guilty.
Zarkasih's team told the sitting judges that the trial should not be held at the court where he appeared because it was around the area where some of the alleged attacks took place.
Zarkasih was arrested on the island of Java last June, shortly after the arrest of another key JI figure, Abu Dujana, who is also on trial.
Members and associates of Jl have been blamed for taking part in the 2002 nightclub bombings on the resort island of Bali.
The attacks killed 202 people.

STORYLINE
Security was tight on Wednesday as the five-star hotels hit by suicide bombers in Indonesia's capital reopened for business.
Officials at the J.W. Marriott and Ritz-Carlton said guests were being welcomed again after the damaged ground floors were repaired.
The attacks on 17 July killed seven people, six of them foreigners, and wounded more than 50.
No suspects were officially named, but investigators were quick to blame the Southeast Asian group Jemaah Islamiyah or its offshoots, which carried out a string of al-Qaida-supported attacks between 2002 and 2005.
Members of Jemaah Islamiyah and its splinter factions were linked to 2002 and 2005 Bali bombings that killed more than 220 people, an earlier bombing at the J.W. Marriott in 2003 and an attack on the Australian embassy in 2004.
A crackdown by counterterrorism forces netted hundreds of militants in recent years and Jemaah Islamiyah was believed to have been virtually wiped out.
It had been nearly four years since an attack, an achievement that helped President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono win re-election this month.

STORYLINE:
Relatives of those killed in last year's triple suicide blasts on Indonesia's resort island of Bali gathered on Sunday at a beach to mark the first anniversary of the attacks.
Crying and holding onto each other for support, the mostly Australian mourners laid wreathes at Jimbaran bay, where two seafood restaurants were bomber.
The October 1 attacks killed 20 people: 15 Indonesians, four Australians and one Japanese.
Four Islamic militants were recently convicted in the blasts.
A videotape by the alleged mastermind showed in court said the attacks were intended to avenge the deaths of Muslims in the US led wars on Afghanistan and Iraq.
Police guarded the beach-side hotel where the ceremony took place.
The venue was kept secret until the last minute because of fears it could be targeted.
Australian Ambassador Bill Farmer told the crowd of 120 people the perpetrators of attack had not succeeded in long term attempts to cause disruption.
"The attempts of terrorists to spread disorder and dismay, to drive people and faiths apart, to attack the aspiration of Indonesians for a democratic and prosperous future, failed," said Farmer.
The attacks were the second time militants in the world's most populous Muslim nation had targeted Bali, a mostly Hindu island that has long attracted Western tourists.
Nightclub bombs on Bali in 2002 killed 202 people, most of them foreigners.
Attacks at the Australian Embassy and a luxury hotel in Jakarta killed more than 20 people in 2003 and 2004.
Militants from Jemaah Islamiyah, a loose group of Southeast Asian radicals that experts once said received funds from Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida, are blamed in the attacks.
In response to a journalist's question, Australian Ambassador Bill Farmer said Jemaah Islamiyah was still a constant threat.
Indonesia has arrested or convicted more than 150 militants in recent years, and last November killed Jemaah Islamiyah's chief bomb-making expert.
But security experts warn the group is still capable of carrying out attacks.

The leader of an Islamic extremist group with alleged links to al-Qaida said Wednesday that he would refuse to answer police questions about the nightclub bombing on Bali.
Meeting with his lawyer on Wednesday, Abu Bakar Bashir, spiritual head of Jemaah Islamiyah, registered his libel case against Time magazine which recently published allegations that implicated him in other terrorist activities.
Bashir was also scheduled to submit to police questioning but there was no indication whether he would respond to questions about the Bali bombings.
The Indonesian government was considering fast-tracking tougher anti-terrorism measures.
Foreign countries have repeatedly urged Indonesia to arrest Bashir, who runs an Islamic boarding school in Indonesia. He denies any involvement and the government has not moved against him, fearing a backlash by extremists.
Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda told reporters that the government was working on giving President Megawati Sukarnoputri authority to impose a long-stalled anti-terrorism law by decree. The law has been stalled in Parliament for months.
There was no indication when a decree would be handed down, but Megawati would be expected to seek approval from parliamentary leaders before doing so.

STORYLINE
The alleged spiritual leader of an Islamic extremist organisation in Indonesia on Wednesday filed a 107 point six (M) million US dollars lawsuit against Time magazine for a report alleging he has links to terrorism.
The lawsuit was filed as Indonesia comes under increasing pressure to arrest Abu Bakar Bashir on suspicions that he leads Jemaah Islamiyah, which has been identified as a likely culprit for the Bali bombing.
The group - which wants to establish a pan-Islamic state in Southeast Asia - has also been accused of plotting to attack the US and other Western embassies in Singapore earlier this year.
Malaysia and Singapore have arrested scores of suspected members, but Indonesia claims it lacks evidence to arrest Bashir, who runs an Islamic boarding school.
Though no one has claimed responsibility for the attack in Bali, which killed more than 180 people, al-Qaida and Jemaah Islamiyah are widely suspected.
Bashir has blamed the Bali attacks on the CIA and on Wednesday denied that Jemaah Islamiyah exist at all.
Abu Bakar Bashir told reporters that the accusations were "the invention of infidels".
He accused the government, which is considering fast-tracking tougher anti-terrorism measures, of selling out its Muslim population under pressure from foreign governments.
He also said that the crackdown on the Jemaah Islamiyah group was a conspiracy invented to arrest Muslims.
The cleric has been summoned by police to give evidence on Thursday supporting the lawsuit against Time, but has said he will not answer any questions about the Bali bombing.

STORYLINE:
The United States on Wednesday designated the Indonesia-based Jemaah Islamiyah organisation as a foreign terrorist organisation and asked the United Nations to join in cutting off the flow of contributions to the group and blocking travel by its members.
The alleged spiritual leader of the group, Abu Bakar Bashir, was arrested last week on suspicion of his involvement in several church bombings that killed 19 people in Indonesia two years ago.
Jemaah Islamiyah is also suspected of involvement in the bombings of a Bali nightclub on October 12 in which more than 180 people died.
While arguing that the Bali bombings were the worst attack since September 11 2001, State Department spokesman Richard Reeker added that a link with al-Qaida was not conclusively established.
He went on to say that the process of trying to prevent Jemaah Islamiyah from carrying out terrorist attacks began long before the attack in Bali.
By adding the group to 34 other organisations branded as terrorist, the State Department has made it a crime for Americans to assist its members and has barred them from getting visas to travel in the United States.
At the same time, the US vowed to work with other members of the United Nations to freeze Jemaah Islamiyah assets.

A top investigator on Monday said the prime suspect in the Bali bombings studied under a detained Muslim cleric suspected to be the spiritual head of Jemaah Islamiyah organisation, a group purported to have links with Al Qaida.
Police have been trying to establish a link between prime suspect known only as Amrozi and Abu Bakar Bashir, the alleged spiritual leader of Jemaah Islamiyah, since they arrested Amrozi last week.
Major General I Made Mangku Pastika, the top investigator on the case, said at a news conference in Bali that Amrozi had taken religious lessons under Bashir in neighbouring Malaysia, where both men were living in the late 90s.
Pastika said that "Abu Bakar Bashir is a well known Muslim cleric who has many students. One of his students is Amrozi." Pastika also said Bashir founded the Malaysian branch of Jemaah Islamiyah, but maintained that the group had no operational cells in Indonesia.
Sixty-four year old Bashir is currently detained over a series of church bombings in 2000, but he has not been named a suspect in the Bali blasts.
Foreign intelligence officials have accused Jemaah Islamiyah, purported to have links to Al Qaida, of carrying out the two simultaneous Bali bombings that killed nearly 200 people on October 12, mostly foreign tourists.
Also on Monday, an Indonesian court in the country's capital Jakarta overturned a suit filed by Bashir claiming his arrest was unlawful and ordered his detention to continue.
One of Bashir's lawyers, Adnan Buyung Nasution said he was disappointed with the court's decision.
Lawyers of the Muslim cleric also said they would appeal the decision to the Supreme Court.
Bashir's supporters peacefully congregated outside and inside the court, holding banners and posters.
Bashir is in a police hospital in Jakarta suffering from lung and stomach problems.

STORYLINE:
The alleged spiritual leader of the Indonesian militant group Jemaah Islamiyah was examined by police doctors on Thursday.
The cleric, Abu Bakar Bashir, has been hospitalised for the past week in his hometown of Solo, about 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of Jakarta, for respiratory problems.
While in hospital, he was placed under custody for alleged involvement in a spate of church bombings two years ago in which 19 people died.
A cardiologist said Bashir was showing improvement but still needed rest and should not leave hospital.
Police said that when Bashir, 64, is found to have recovered sufficiently, he could be moved to a jail in Jakarta or placed under house arrest and questioned in Solo.
Bashir is believed to be closely involved with Jemaah Islamiyah, a shadowy militant organisation in Southeast Asia widely blamed for the nightclub bombings in Bali on October 12 that killed nearly 200 people.
Bashir has repeatedly denied any involvement in terrorist activities.
He has also denied the existence of Jemaah Islamiyah, saying it was an invention of the United States and Israel.
On Wednesday, the US State Department formally designated Jemaah Islamiyah as a foreign terrorist organisation, blocking members' assets, barring them from entering the US and making it a crime for Americans to assist them.
Bashir was unavailable for comment on Thursday, but his supporters in Solo dismissed the State Department's action.

STORYLINE:
Indonesia's defence minister on Monday blamed al-Qaida and its extremist allies for the massive bomb attack that killed more than 180 people at a nightclub on the resort island of Bali.
It was the first time that a top Indonesia government official implicated al-Qaida in Saturday's attack.
Until now, police investigators had been saying they had few clues and no suspects.
No one claimed responsibility for the bombing at the Kuta Beach nightlife district - the worst terrorist attack in Indonesia's history.
Suspicion, however, immediately turned to al-Qaida and an affiliated group, Jemaah Islamiyah, which is said to want a pan-Islamic state across Malaysia, Indonesia and the southern Philippines.
Jemaah Islamiyah has already been implicated in a plot at the beginning of this year to bomb foreign embassies in the region.
However, Abu Bakar Bashir, a Muslim cleric accused of leading Jemaah Islamiyah, strongly denied involvement in the Bali attacks.
Speaking from Solo, a city in central Java where he runs an Islamic boarding school, he claimed the bombing had been "engineered by the United States and its allies to justify allegations that Indonesia is a base for terrorists".
Indonesian police refused to say whether Bashir would be questioned despite repeated calls by neighbouring countries that he be arrested.
In a recent exclusive interview with APTN, Bashir denied that Jemaah Islamiyah existed or that he had any links to the al-Qaida network.
He said he had absolutely no relationship with Omar al-Farouq, a Kuwaiti thought to have been the main al-Qaida operative in Southeast Asia, or any of the 19 alleged Jemaah Islamiyah members arrested in Singapore in August for allegedly planning attacks on US personnel.
Bashir also claimed that any attempt to detain him would result in a backlash from the Indonesian people who would react by "defending Islam".

STORYLINE:
The alleged spiritual leader of the Indonesian militant group Jemaah Islamiyah remained in hospital on Wednesday as the US and Australia sought to have the organisation labelled a terrorist group.
Doctors have said Abu Bakar Bashir, who was admitted to hospital on Friday for breathing and heart problems, continues to need treatment and they don't yet know when he can be released.
Jemaah Islamiyah is suspected of involvement in the October 12 nightclub bombing in Bali that killed more than 180 people and injured 300.
Bashir, who has denied any wrongdoing, was arrested last week on suspicion of involvement in a series of church bombings that killed 19 people in Indonesia two years ago.
According to a confidential report circulated by US and Australian officials, the United States and Australia will ask the United Nations to declare Jemaah Islamiyah a terrorist organisation.
A Philippines official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told AP that the report details Jemaah Islamiyah's history, key leaders and terrorist plots and strikes in the last two years to support a petition asking a UN Security Council committee to brand the group a terror organisation.
Australian Prime Minister John Howard has said he is confident the United Nations would support the petition, on the basis of mounting evidence that Jemaah Islamiyah played a role in the Bali bomb attack.
The US State Department was expected to add the group to its own list of terror groups on Wednesday, making it a crime to contribute funds to it and bar members from entering the United States.

Doctors in Indonesia treating Abu Bakar Bashir, alleged head of the militant group Jemaah Islamiyah, have said he continues to need hospital treatment and don't yet know when he can be released.
The group Jemaah Islamiyah is suspected of involvement in the October 12 nightclub bombing in Bali that killed more than 180 people and injured 300.
On Tuesday Bashir still lay in his hospital bed in Solo, 400 kilometres (250 miles) east of the captial Jakarta.
He's been in hospital since Friday for breathing and heart problems.
On Saturday, he was placed under arrest - although Indonesian authorities are still trying to decide what the best way of interrogating him will be.
One of Bashir's lawyers, Djoko Trisno Widodo, said the arrest warrant listed Bashir's alleged involvement in a series of church bombings two years ago and a reported plot to assassinate Indonesian President Megawati Sukarnoputri.
Bashir denies any links with terrorism.
Bashir's doctors said on Monday they had formed a three-man team - consisting of a cardiologist, a lung specialist and an internist - to monitor his condition.
They said they could not predict when Bashir would be released.
Police are considering confining Bashir to Solo under police supervision, or taking him to a police hospital in Jakarta and holding him there.

STORYLINE:
Indonesian police have moved a suspected mastermind of the October 12 Bali attacks from the capital Jakarta to the tourist island.
Imam Samudra has confessed to masterminding the attacks that killed nearly 200 people.
An alleged member of the regional terror group Jemaah Islamiyah and alleged Afghan-trained explosives expert, Samudra has admitted to planning a series of earlier bombings across Indonesia, including church blasts in 2000 that killed 19.
Indonesian intelligence officials said that with the Bali attacks Samudra was acting at the behest of Hambali, who is believed to be a former operations chief in Jemaah Islamiyah.
Samudra will be held on Bali where another suspect, Amrozi is being held.
Amrozi is a brother of alleged operations chief of Jemaah Islamiyah Mukhlas, also known as Ali Gufron, who confessed on Thursday to helping plan the Bali bombings.
Police said on Thursday that the confession from Mukhlas has provided investigators with the strongest evidence yet that Jemaah Islamiyah was behind the blasts.
Police have said they are looking for as many as 10 suspects, but so far have said that only Mukhlas, Amrozi and Samudra played a direct role in the blasts.
None has been charged.

The attack involved the detonation of three bombs: a backpack-mounted device carried by a suicide bomber; a large car bomb, both of which were detonated in or near popular nightclubs in Kuta; and a third much smaller device detonated outside the United States consulate in Denpasar, causing only minor damage. An audio-cassette purportedly carrying a recorded voice message from Osama Bin Laden stated that the Bali bombings were in direct retaliation for support of the United States' war on terror and Australia's role in the liberation of East Timor.
On 9 November 2008, Imam Samudra, Amrozi Nurhasyim and Huda bin Abdul Haq were executed by firing squad on the island prison of Nusakambangan at 00:15 local time (17:15 UTC).
On 9 March 2010, Dulmatin, nicknamed "the Genius" – believed to be responsible for setting off one of the Bali bombs with a mobile phone – was killed in a shoot-out with Indonesian police in Jakarta
At 23:05 Central Indonesian Time on 12 October 2002, a suicide bomber inside the nightclub Paddy's Pub (sometimes referred to as Paddy’s Irish Bar) detonated a bomb in his backpack, causing many patrons, with or without injuries, to immediately flee into the street. Twenty seconds later, a second and much more powerful car bomb hidden inside a white Mitsubishi van was detonated by another suicide bomber outside the Sari Club, a renowned open-air thatch-roof bar located opposite Paddy's Pub. The van was also rigged for detonation by remote control in case the second bomber had a sudden change of heart.
The bombing occurred during one of the busiest tourist periods of the year in Kuta Beach, driven in part by many Australian sporting teams making their annual end-of-season holiday.
Damage to the densely populated residential and commercial district was immense, destroying neighbouring buildings and shattering windows several blocks away. The car bomb explosion left a one metre deep crater.
The investigators were thus able to recreate the bombers activities. Amrozi, Idris and Ali Imron had simply walked into a dealership and purchased a new Yamaha motorbike, after asking how much they could re-sell it for if they returned it in a few days. Imron used the motorbike to plant the small bomb outside the U.S. Consulate. Idris then rode the motorbike as Imron drove two suicide bombers in the Mitsubishi to the nightclub district in Kuta. He stopped near the Sari Club, instructed one suicide bomber to put on his explosives vest and the other to arm the vehicle bomb. The first bomber headed to Paddy's Pub. Idris then left the second bomber, who had only learned to drive in a straight line, to drive the minivan the short distance to the Sari Club. Idris picked up Imron on the Yamaha and the duo headed back into Denpasar. Idris dialed the number of the Nokia to detonate the bomb at the Consulate. The two suicide bombers exploded their devices. Imron and Idris dropped the motorbike at a place where it eventually attracted the attention of the caretaker.
The final death toll was 202, mainly comprising Western tourists and holiday-makers in their 20s and 30s who were in or near Paddy's Pub or the Sari Club, but also including many Balinese Indonesians working or living nearby, or simply passing by. Hundreds more people suffered horrific burns and other injuries. The largest group among those killed were holidayers from Australia with 88 fatalities. On 14 October, the United Nations Security Council passed Resolution 1438 condemning the attack as a threat to international peace and security.
Two bodies were never identified and were cremated at Bali in September 2003
The Mitsubishi L300 van bomb was initially thought to have consisted of C4, a military grade plastic explosive which is difficult to obtain. However, investigators discovered the bomb was made from potassium chlorate, aluminium powder, and sulfur. For the Sari club bomb with the L300 van, the terrorists assembled 12 plastic filing cabinets filled with explosives. The cabinets, each containing a potassium chlorate, aluminum powder, sulfur mixture with a TNT booster, was connected by 150 metres (490 ft) of PETN-filled detonating cord. Ninety-four RDX electric detonators were fitted to the TNT. The total weight of the van bomb was 2,250 pounds (1,020 kg).

May 2006
It's the heartland of terrorism in South East Asia. A sanctuary for groups like Jamaah Islamiah and Al Qaeda. We follow the police battling to shut down the Jihadist networks in Southern Philippines.
"I am in the crosshair of terrorism here", proclaims police chief, Lito. For the past 18 years, he's led the police unit tasked with hunting down extremists. Tonight, he's received a tip-off about a suspected JI member. But as police approach their target, the operation unravels. "Someone's been shot!" states a man in the crowd. It's Lito's informer. The night's operation is cancelled. Next day, Lito travels to Sulu, where Abu Sayyaf and Jemaah Islamiyah are known to be regrouping. Despite the presence of 2,000 troops here, success against the extremists is far from assured. Within hours of arriving, one of Lito's colleagues is gunned down.

Nasir Abbas, former member of al-Qaeda's regional affiliate, Jemaah Islamiya (JI). After the 2002 Bali bombings he came to a pause and switched sides. He actively assisted the police in tracking down and arresting some of his former comrades. He tried to persuade his former companions that their interpretation of the Quran was wrong, and joined a government program to convince convicted terrorists that killing unarmed civilians in the name of faith is wrong. Recently he published a comic book for elementary school for the awareness children. This documentary will mainly focus on why he wrote this book, what is in it? How it was received by the readers? And what impacts would it cause?

Two widows and a man who lost five of his friends come face to face with two terrorists who engineered the deaths of 202 people by bombing a Bali nightclub twelve years ago. In this report the Bali bereaved search for answers.
"Meeting a terrorist is the hardest thing you'll ever do", says Jan Lacznyski, who seeks closure for the murder of his five friends. Joined by two widows of Indonesians killed on the same night, Lacznyski meets Nasir Abbas, the former leader in terrorist cell Jemaah Islamiyah, who trained the bombers in weaponry and warfare. Abbas is now a sworn convert to a different cause, a changed man after he gave information on the bombings. "I tell God that now today my Jihad is against the terrorism action", says Abbas. But will his words convince the victims of his repentance and reform? When the trio take the unprecedented opportunity to meet Ali Imron, the only surviving terrorist from the atrocity to evade execution, the answers are even more problematic.

OPENING STATEMENT:
Good afternoon.
On Sunday, 25 January 2015, the PNP Special Actions Force (PNP-SAF) conducted a law enforcement operation in Mamasapano, Maguindanao to arrest a high-value suspected terrorist Zulkifli Bin Hir, also known as “Marwan”, who was allegedly a member of the “Markaziyah”, Jemaah Islamiyah’s central command.
The PNP-SAF performed this mission with courage and professionalism. Based on latest reports, there is a high likelihood that the primary target, Marwan, has been neutralized.
As directed by the President, Secretaries Mar Roxas and Voltaire Gazmin left for Cotabato City this morning to supervise the ongoing operations. With them are AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) Chief of Staff General Gregorio Catapang and PNP Officer-in-Charge Deputy Director General Leonardo Espina.
According to the AFP, a ceasefire has been enforced since 5 p.m. yesterday. By 7 p.m. last night, the AFP had initiated retrieval operations in coordination with the MILF (Moro Islamic Liberation Front), the International Monitoring Team (IMT) and the joint Coordinating Committee on the Cessation of Hostilities or CCCH. Retrieval operations are still ongoing.
I am ready to answer your questions.
