Summoning rules: The HOST must be human (The player being summoned can be human or undead). The HOST must be WITHIN not exceeding 15% +10 Soul Levels above or below the player to be summoned. (in example: SL 50 could summon SL 67, but not SL 68 (7.5+10 = 17.5+50 = 67.5)). The HOST's area boss must still be alive. 2. Understanding P2P IP Pool: Dark Souls connects to Games for Windows Live (GFWL) for authentication. Data.exe communicates with a single GFWL internet protocol (IP) and starts adding player IPs into your Peer to Peer (P2P) IP pool. This process begins at the title screen and will continue to input new IPs frequently. This is not prioritized by location, and is completely random as it will possibly select many IPs from different countries and areas of the world before adding localized IPs to your P2P pool. While this isn't much of a problem for general game play, it can extend the time it will take to summon a local friend. 3. P2P Web: Dark Souls uses your IP Pool to create a P2P web which sends messages and souls signs throughout the player base. It takes an average of 15 minutes to reach a healthy IP Pool. Quitting to the title screen will purge your IP pool. Changing zones will not. Any player who is summoned or any invader is added to your IP pool. It is much easier to summon someone once you have already done so. Messages, bloodstains, summon signs and invasions are sent through the P2P network through direct IP connections, but are not necessarily from someone directly connected to you. 4. Nearly all the summoning advice you've read is wrong: Replacement of summoning signs, and sitting at bonfires do nothing to increase your chances of connection. In fact, the removal and replacement of summoning signs hinders your chances and creates a longer waiting period. When you place your soul sign, it is sent to all of the players in your IP pool. Then it is sent to each player they are connected to until it reaches someone who wants to summon you. Therefore, the bigger your IP pool, the higher the chance you will be summoned. Replacement of your soul sign is actually counter-productive as it sends false signals throughout the P2P network. When trying to play with someone specific, doing anything but waiting tends to be counter-productive. 5. Reasons for summoning failed: The player disconnected. The player was summoned. The player died. The player left the valid summon area. The player is repeatedly replacing their soul sign. Your firewall is blocking inbound UDP traffic. However, most often the problem is P2P echoes. As mentioned before, when your summoning sign is placed it must travel across direct IP connections to reach another player. Since it may have to travel from country to country before it gets to you, there is quite a bit of delay involved. The summoning sign sends out pulses for about 30 seconds before disappearing. Therefore, often when it shows up in your game, it's actually no longer a valid connection as the pulse has ended. You will notice that the summon sign will usually disappear within seconds after a summon attempt which fails. This works the same way with invasions. The best thing you can do is wait for the summon sign to show up again and keep trying. You will typically get the summoning to succeed within 3 attempts. Having the player replace soul signs just makes the problem worse.
