Michael Morpurgo, the author of the novel War Horse on which Steven Spielberg's film from 2011 is based, is among the contributors to How to Write. Michael reveals the sources of his inspiration and the techniques he uses to 'just get the stupid thing down on paper'.
Philip Pullman, writer of the His Dark Materials trilogy, discusses the need for discipline, the importance of memory and how it is crucial to stand inside a scene and imagine what is seen and not seen.
Also taking part are poets Caroline Bird and Kate Clanchy, and novelists Rebecca Abrams and Charles Cummins. They are among a group of top authors gathered at Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire to share the secrets of creative writing with almost 400 young people.

A biography of the English mathematician Alan Turing, who was one of the inventors of the digital computer and one of the key figures in the breaking of the Enigma code, used by the Germans to send secret orders to their U-boats in World War II. Turing was also a homosexual in Britain at a time when this was illegal, besides being a security risk.
Adapted for Television
Hugh Whitemore wrote a shortened version of the play for television. This was filmed in late 1995, as a production of THE DRAMA HOUSE and WGBH BOSTON for BBC NORTH.The first transmission, to my knowledge, was on 17 September 1996 in Canada, by Showcase Television. It was shown in the United States as a Masterpiece Theater production on 2 February 1997. The first British transmission was on BBC1, 5 February 1997.
Filmed for television in a naturalistic suburban setting, rather than on a timeless, expressionist stage set, Breaking the Code inevitably sacrificed many of the elements that made it grip theatre audiences. No stagecraft magic of Derek Jacobi's real-time changes of age: instead the teenage Turing was played by a young actor.
The adapted script also lost some of the more special moments of the play. For instance, on the stage, Turing reveals the logical secret of the Bombe on his last holiday on Corfu, but with the irony that it is revealed to someone who does not understand a word. On the television screen, his explanation is given to an Intelligence officer 'John Smith', all irony lost.
Hugh Whitemore also dropped the words at the death scene, and supplied an anticlimactic ending, a voiceover explaining the dubious honour done to Alan Turing by having part of the Manchester Ring Road being named after him. But this sudden shift into 1990s documentary mode holds the danger of dating very rapidly, and also prompts the awkward question of what Alan Turing is supposed 'really' to have done, which is even less clear in the television film than it was on the stage.
But the television version gained in ways I could not have foreseen. The direction made it less of a one-man show, and the supporting cast was very strong. The sheer bodily closeness, under the unflinching gaze of the camera, presented a wonderful image of 'the logical' confronting head-on 'the physical,' something I had wrestled with in my own writing.

Take one part spiky hair, two parts genius sisters, a dash of talking dog, mix thoroughly and the result is an action-packed animated series about a boy willing to try anything in the name of science. Join Johnny and his dog Dukey in their high-action escapades.
• Jonathan "Johnny" A troublesome, unpredictable, and widely iconic 11-year-old boy who is the brother of Susan and Mary and the son of Hugh and Lila and he serves as the main protagonist and hero in the show. He is frequently called the "kid with the flaming hair" due to having scarlet red highlights in his yellow hair. As well as this, he is most often seen wearing green cargo pants and a black shirt with a trefoil symbol on it, which he wears under a navy blue dress shirt, and a watch that he rarely uses. Because he has Susan and Mary by his side, he can live any kid's dream, only to find that some dreams aren't worth living. He is very hyperactive, and often messes with his sisters' inventions, causing trouble and mayhem, but just as often proves himself to be extremely clever such as by frequently tricking his genius sisters or conquering the day from whatever goodness happens to show up. Johnny is also quite spoiled and stubborn, as he gets what he wants, through deceit, blackmail, orpersuasion. Johnny has an alter ego that he calls "Johnny X", who is a superhero that has various superpowers, including hurricane hands shapeshifting, fire-powered transformation, teleportation, ESP, "Power Poots", and flight. A running gag for this form is that his hurricane hands never work, either due to the target being immune to it or other factors. He was in love with Janet and later Sissy, the latter born out of hostile rivalry.
• Dukey Johnny's anthropomorphic 16-year-old talking pet dog and best friend. The cause of Dukey's anthropomorphism is because of one of Susan and Mary's inventions, thus giving him humanlike abilities. Dukey, when Mrs and Mr Test aren't around, will stand on his hind legs rather than all fours, like he does when Johnny's parents are around. The reason for this is that Mr. Test banned Susan and Mary from DNA experiments, which was how they gave Dukey human-like intelligence. There have been a few "close calls" around the series, such as when Mr. Test got trapped inside of one of Johnny's video games and Johnny and Dukey also went inside the game to rescue him, and Dukey accidentally spoke in front of him, causing Mr. Test to ask, "Did Dukey just talk?" Every time one of his parents asks this question after Dukey just spoke in front of them, either Johnny, Susan, or Mary answers "no" and their parents immediately believe them. Sometimes Dukey dresses as a human being when going out in public, and he is addressed by others as Johnny's "hairy friend" or "the kid with the rare hair disorder" because the minor characters' lack of intellect causes them to believe that Dukey is a human.

The Song Remembers When
The Song Remembers When is the third studio album by American country music artist, Trisha Yearwood. The album was released October 26, 1993 on MCA Nashville Records and was produced by Garth Fundis. It was Yearwood's third collaboration with Fundis, who also produced her 1992 album, Hearts in Armor which received wide critical acclaim, as well as her platinum-selling eponymous debut. The title track was the album's lead single, becoming a major hit, peaking at #2 on the Hot Country Singles & Tracks chart in 1993.
Background
The Song Remembers When was recorded in Nashville, Tennessee in 1993 and contained ten tracks. Thom Jurek of Allmusic called the content "contemporary country" and "top notch no matter where the pair get it from." John McAlley of Rolling Stone called The Song Remembers When's tone "somber." McAlley goes on to explain that, "Love (Sort of) Stinks" might have been a more apt title for this album, such are the voices of heartache, spite and uncertainty that permeate it. So total, in fact, is its focus on the tribulations of romantic love that Song resembles a concept record." The album opens with the title track, which was described by Jurek as "innocent love gone bad." The second song, "Better Your Heart Than Mine," which was written by Lisa Angelle and Andrew Gold was said to evoke the Rock-inspired style of Bonnie Raitt, according to Jurek. The third track, "I Don't Fall In Love So Easy" features background vocals from Rodney Crowell, who also wrote the song.

Johnny Test
Johnny Test is an American-Canadian animated television series produced by Warner Bros. Animation, for the first season, and Cookie Jar, for the remainder of the series. It premiered on Kids' WB, on September 17, 2005, which continued to air the series through its second and third seasons. He is described as a boot who just wants to have fun The rest of the series aired on Cartoon Network, from its debut on January 7, 2008, in the United States and internationally. In Canada, the series airs on Teletoon, premiering September 8, 2006.
The series revolves around the adventures of the title character, Johnny Test, an 11-year-old suburban boy who lives with his super-genius 13-year-old twin sisters, Susan and Mary, both of whom are scientists. They reside in the fictional town of Porkbelly, which is alternately located in Ontario or British Columbia. Johnny is often used as a test subject for his genius twin sisters' inventions and experiments, which range from gadgets to superpowers. Their experiments often cause problems that he must resolve and he must sometimes fight villains in the process. He occasionally saves the world with his sisters' inventions.

Hugh Prestwood
Hugh Prestwood (born in El Paso, Texas) is an American songwriter whose work is primarily in country music. His first hit as a songwriter was "Hard Time for Lovers", which was recorded in 1978 by Judy Collins. Prestwood also wrote "Hard Rock Bottom of Your Heart", a Number One for Randy Travis in 1990, and a song for which Prestwood received the Robert J. Burton Country Song of the Year from BMI.
Other artists who have recorded his material include Alison Krauss ("Ghost in this House"), Collin Raye ("On the Verge"), Shenandoah ("Ghost in This House"), Highway 101 ("Bing Bang Boom"), Barbara Mandrell ("Where are the Pieces of My Heart"), and Trisha Yearwood ("The Song Remembers When", for which he won an Emmy in 1994). He is also known for his song "Asking Us to Dance," which originally appeared on Kathy Mattea's album Time Passes By. Jimmy Buffett recorded "Savannah Fare You Well", on his "Far Side Of The World" album.

Filmed for television in a naturalistic suburban setting, rather than on a timeless, expressionist stage set, Breaking the Code inevitably sacrificed many of the elements that made it grip theatre audiences. No stagecraft magic of Derek Jacobi's real-time changes of age: instead the teenage Turing was played by a young actor.
The adapted script also lost some of the more special moments of the play. For instance, on the stage, Turing reveals the logical secret of the Bombe on his last holiday on Corfu, but with the irony that it is revealed to someone who does not understand a word. On the television screen, his explanation is given to an Intelligence officer 'John Smith', all irony lost.
Hugh Whitemore also dropped the words at the death scene, and supplied an anticlimactic ending, a voiceover explaining the dubious honour done to Alan Turing by having part of the Manchester Ring Road being named after him. But this sudden shift into 1990s documentary mode holds the danger of dating very rapidly, and also prompts the awkward question of what Alan Turing is supposed 'really' to have done, which is even less clear in the television film than it was on the stage.
But the television version gained in ways I could not have foreseen. The direction made it less of a one-man show, and the supporting cast was very strong. The sheer bodily closeness, under the unflinching gaze of the camera, presented a wonderful image of 'the logical' confronting head-on 'the physical,' something I had wrestled with in my own writing.

Take one part spiky hair, two parts genius sisters, a dash of talking dog, mix thoroughly and the result is an action-packed animated series about a boy willing to try anything in the name of science. Join Johnny and his dog Dukey in their high-action escapades.
• Jonathan "Johnny" A troublesome, unpredictable, and widely iconic 11-year-old boy who is the brother of Susan and Mary and the son of Hugh and Lila and he serves as the main protagonist and hero in the show. He is frequently called the "kid with the flaming hair" due to having scarlet red highlights in his yellow hair. As well as this, he is most often seen wearing green cargo pants and a black shirt with a trefoil symbol on it, which he wears under a navy blue dress shirt, and a watch that he rarely uses. Because he has Susan and Mary by his side, he can live any kid's dream, only to find that some dreams aren't worth living. He is very hyperactive, and often messes with his sisters' inventions, causing trouble and mayhem, but just as often proves himself to be extremely clever such as by frequently tricking his genius sisters or conquering the day from whatever goodness happens to show up. Johnny is also quite spoiled and stubborn, as he gets what he wants, through deceit, blackmail, orpersuasion. Johnny has an alter ego that he calls "Johnny X", who is a superhero that has various superpowers, including hurricane hands shapeshifting, fire-powered transformation, teleportation, ESP, "Power Poots", and flight. A running gag for this form is that his hurricane hands never work, either due to the target being immune to it or other factors. He was in love with Janet and later Sissy, the latter born out of hostile rivalry.

The cause of Dukey's anthropomorphism is because of one of Susan and Mary's inventions, thus giving him humanlike abilities. Dukey, when Mrs and Mr Test aren't around, will stand on his hind legs rather than all fours, like he does when Johnny's parents are around. The reason for this is that Mr. Test banned Susan and Mary from DNA experiments, which was how they gave Dukey human-like intelligence. There have been a few "close calls" around the series, such as when Mr. Test got trapped inside of one of Johnny's video games and Johnny and Dukey also went inside the game to rescue him, and Dukey accidentally spoke in front of him, causing Mr. Test to ask, "Did Dukey just talk?" Every time one of his parents asks this question after Dukey just spoke in front of them, either Johnny, Susan, or Mary answers "no" and their parents immediately believe them. Sometimes Dukey dresses as a human being when going out in public, and he is addressed by others as Johnny's "hairy friend" or "the kid with the rare hair disorder" because the minor characters' lack of intellect causes them to believe that Dukey is a human.

It was shown in the United States as a Masterpiece Theater production on 2 February 1997. The first British transmission was on BBC1, 5 February 1997.
Filmed for television in a naturalistic suburban setting, rather than on a timeless, expressionist stage set, Breaking the Code inevitably sacrificed many of the elements that made it grip theatre audiences. No stagecraft magic of Derek Jacobi's real-time changes of age: instead the teenage Turing was played by a young actor.
The adapted script also lost some of the more special moments of the play. For instance, on the stage, Turing reveals the logical secret of the Bombe on his last holiday on Corfu, but with the irony that it is revealed to someone who does not understand a word. On the television screen, his explanation is given to an Intelligence officer 'John Smith', all irony lost.
Hugh Whitemore also dropped the words at the death scene, and supplied an anticlimactic ending, a voiceover explaining the dubious honour done to Alan Turing by having part of the Manchester Ring Road being named after him. But this sudden shift into 1990s documentary mode holds the danger of dating very rapidly, and also prompts the awkward question of what Alan Turing is supposed 'really' to have done, which is even less clear in the television film than it was on the stage.
But the television version gained in ways I could not have foreseen. The direction made it less of a one-man show, and the supporting cast was very strong. The sheer bodily closeness, under the unflinching gaze of the camera, presented a wonderful image of 'the logical' confronting head-on 'the physical,' something I had wrestled with in my own writing.

Take one part spiky hair, two parts genius sisters, a dash of talking dog, mix thoroughly and the result is an action-packed animated series about a boy willing to try anything in the name of science. Join Johnny and his dog Dukey in their high-action escapades.
• Jonathan "Johnny" A troublesome, unpredictable, and widely iconic 11-year-old boy who is the brother of Susan and Mary and the son of Hugh and Lila and he serves as the main protagonist and hero in the show. He is frequently called the "kid with the flaming hair" due to having scarlet red highlights in his yellow hair. As well as this, he is most often seen wearing green cargo pants and a black shirt with a trefoil symbol on it, which he wears under a navy blue dress shirt, and a watch that he rarely uses. Because he has Susan and Mary by his side, he can live any kid's dream, only to find that some dreams aren't worth living. He is very hyperactive, and often messes with his sisters' inventions, causing trouble and mayhem, but just as often proves himself to be extremely clever such as by frequently tricking his genius sisters or conquering the day from whatever goodness happens to show up. Johnny is also quite spoiled and stubborn, as he gets what he wants, through deceit, blackmail, orpersuasion. Johnny has an alter ego that he calls "Johnny X", who is a superhero that has various superpowers, including hurricane hands shapeshifting, fire-powered transformation, teleportation, ESP, "Power Poots", and flight. A running gag for this form is that his hurricane hands never work, either due to the target being immune to it or other factors. He was in love with Janet and later Sissy, the latter born out of hostile rivalry.
• Dukey Johnny's anthropomorphic 16-year-old talking pet dog and best friend. The cause of Dukey's anthropomorphism is because of one of Susan and Mary's inventions, thus giving him humanlike abilities. Dukey, when Mrs and Mr Test aren't around, will stand on his hind legs rather than all fours, like he does when Johnny's parents are around. The reason for this is that Mr. Test banned Susan and Mary from DNA experiments, which was how they gave Dukey human-like intelligence. There have been a few "close calls" around the series, such as when Mr. Test got trapped inside of one of Johnny's video games and Johnny and Dukey also went inside the game to rescue him, and Dukey accidentally spoke in front of him, causing Mr. Test to ask, "Did Dukey just talk?" Every time one of his parents asks this question after Dukey just spoke in front of them, either Johnny, Susan, or Mary answers "no" and their parents immediately believe them. Sometimes Dukey dresses as a human being when going out in public, and he is addressed by others as Johnny's "hairy friend" or "the kid with the rare hair disorder" because the minor characters' lack of intellect causes them to believe that Dukey is a human.

At the end of 1894, a Jewish captain named Alfred Dreyfus was accused of treason and was sent to Devil's Island to live in solitary confinement for the rest of his life. It was not until 1906, more than ten years later, that he was finally fully rehabilitated for a crime he never committed. In the interim, the Dreyfus Affair convulsed France, as supporters of Dreyfus fought against those who sought to keep him in prison despite mounting evidence of his innocence and even the confession of the real traitor.
The Dreyfus Affair was one of the turning points of modern French political history, and has been commemorated by the Republican elite as a triumph of benevolent and rational secularism that inoculated France from the temptations of interwar fascism. Such an interpretation pits Left against Right, secularism against Catholicism, rationalism against obscurantism and the universalism of the French Revolutionary tradition against an exclusive and aggressive nationalism. Like the myth of 'resistance' used to salvage national pride after defeat and collaboration during World War II, the fable of Dreyfusard triumph provides a comforting view of a 'true' France battling successfully against fanaticism.
The lectures overturn this complacent vision by rejecting the conventional wisdom of the Dreyfusards as intellectuals who unambiguously supported the cause of rationalism. Rather, the lectures show how their political commitment was inspired not only by humanitarian idealism, but also by venomous hatreds, fantasies of brutalization, and conspiratorial fears. Using thousands of pages of documents never before cited, the lectures explore the emotional world of leading Dreyfusards and show how their political advocacy grew out of their passionate friendships, love affairs and sibling relations. All three lectures focus on the role of history-of classical antiquity, the Bible, the Renaissance, and the enlightenment-in providing heroic models and examples of conflict, which, they believed, supplied important lessons for waging war against their anti-Dreyfusard opponents. Although the Dreyfusards were often leading anticlericals, Ruth Harris will show how their 'mystique' often came to share the missionizing zeal and even authoritarianism of their religious and right-wing enemies.
Ruth Harris is Fellow and Tutor in Modern History, New College, and Lecturer in the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford.

At the end of 1894, a Jewish captain named Alfred Dreyfus was accused of treason and was sent to Devil's Island to live in solitary confinement for the rest of his life. It was not until 1906, more than ten years later, that he was finally fully rehabilitated for a crime he never committed. In the interim, the Dreyfus Affair convulsed France, as supporters of Dreyfus fought against those who sought to keep him in prison despite mounting evidence of his innocence and even the confession of the real traitor.
The Dreyfus Affair was one of the turning points of modern French political history, and has been commemorated by the Republican elite as a triumph of benevolent and rational secularism that inoculated France from the temptations of interwar fascism. Such an interpretation pits Left against Right, secularism against Catholicism, rationalism against obscurantism and the universalism of the French Revolutionary tradition against an exclusive and aggressive nationalism. Like the myth of 'resistance' used to salvage national pride after defeat and collaboration during World War II, the fable of Dreyfusard triumph provides a comforting view of a 'true' France battling successfully against fanaticism.
The lectures overturn this complacent vision by rejecting the conventional wisdom of the Dreyfusards as intellectuals who unambiguously supported the cause of rationalism. Rather, the lectures show how their political commitment was inspired not only by humanitarian idealism, but also by venomous hatreds, fantasies of brutalization, and conspiratorial fears. Using thousands of pages of documents never before cited, the lectures explore the emotional world of leading Dreyfusards and show how their political advocacy grew out of their passionate friendships, love affairs and sibling relations. All three lectures focus on the role of history-of classical antiquity, the Bible, the Renaissance, and the enlightenment-in providing heroic models and examples of conflict, which, they believed, supplied important lessons for waging war against their anti-Dreyfusard opponents. Although the Dreyfusards were often leading anticlericals, Ruth Harris will show how their 'mystique' often came to share the missionizing zeal and even authoritarianism of their religious and right-wing enemies.

Abstract: Recently, building on new ideas in quantum information theory emerging from the study of quantum entanglement, expressive variational classes of quantum states known as tensor network states (TNS) have been developed to model quantum lattice systems approaching quantum phase transitions. These classes have many similarities to representations of planar algebras, and includethe projected entangled-pair states (PEPS) and the multiscale entanglement renormalisation ansatz (MERA). After several years of intensive investigation in the physical literature it has been comprehensively established that PEPS and MERA states provide faithful and parsimonious descriptions of quantum critical phenomena in low dimensions. Tensor network states such as the MERA class enjoy many fascinating properties, including: (1) all n-pt functions may be calculated efficiently; (2) they are not Gaussian states; and (3) they capture conformal data for critical lattice systems. In this talk I will review some of the state of the of the TNS literature. Then I will explain how to build a continuum limit for these states known as the semicontinuous limit. The construction crucially builds on an idea of Jones, who found unitary representations of a discrete analogue of the conformal group known as Thompson's group T. Here I'll describe how to identify lattice observables corresponding to the (primary, secondary, …) quantum fields with fluctuation operators, which obey a lie algebra given by an Inönü-Wigner group contraction of a loop algebra giving rise, in some cases, to representations of Kac-Moody algebras. Ultimately this should give rise to conformal nets for new CFTs. This is work in progress.
