Heading back to Finland - and specifically Helsinki - was our greatest surprise this summer. As the capital city, it has the attractions any big city offers, yet it somehow retains plenty of small town charm. One of the main reasons is that you're never far from nature. Hop on a bicycle or kayak and you within a few kilometers you'll feel as though you're all alone at one with nature.

With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Travel video about destination Helsinki in Finland.
Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is the country’s first capital city from where Finnish culture was born. It is still evocative of the Middle Ages. The sea, a magnificent island landscape and picturesque timber houses are typical of one of the oldest cities in the Gulf Of Bothnia, Uusikaupunki. It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north.

This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes. The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life. Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture. -

It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north. -

A cosmopolitan vibe pervades the city, museums and theatres abound, the tidy streets are packed with bars, restaurants and cafés, and nothing is more than a short tram ride away from the centre. Helsinki has a character that perfectly reflects its geographical location, on the historical fault-line between the Swedish and Russian empires. Although the Finnish capital is unmistakably Scandinavian, the architecture and the psyche of its inhabitants show the clear influence of mother Russia. Another intrinsic part of the city's personality is the sea and all that comes with it; Helsinki boasts 315 islands and almost a 100km (60 miles) of coastline, at its most beautiful in the summer. There are a plethora of maritime attractions from Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to cruises enabling visitors to explore the best of the archipelago, to Pihlajasaari and Uunisaari islands for gorgeous beaches. Its proximity to the ocean means Helsinki's seafood restaurants are bountiful -- try perch, whitefish, pikeperch and salmon served with new potatoes in summertime, while the legendary crayfish season starts in August. In fact, when it comes to dining out, Helsinki has upped its game. "New Nordic Cuisine" (experimental, innovative cooking) has been adopted by numerous small, trendy restaurants and up and coming chefs, while a wave of popup restaurants has increased the diverse flavour of the city's dining scene. All things foodie are celebrated during Restaurant Day, now held four times a year, while the new Abbatoir encapsulates the city's dynamic food culture by showcasing cutting edge restaurants and food-related events. Revisiting Finland - aside from getting married - was the highlight of our summer. As the capital city, it has the attractions any big city offers, yet it somehow retains plenty of small town charm. One of the main reasons is that you're never far from nature. With its long days and short nights, summertime is a great time to be in Helsinki. This was our second visit to the Finnish capital, and we were excited as ever to experience it for a couple of days. With summer in full swing, we enjoyed dinners al fresco, boat trips to nearby islands, and lots of walking around town. Here's a look at how we spent our time in Helsinki:
This is a city that comes alive during the summer months, and it was great enjoying all the events taking place in the city as well as relaxing outdoors. We loved revisiting Helsinki and we discovered so many new places that we had completely skipped over the first time around.

Helsinki, the Daughter of the Baltic, the Gibraltar of the North, a dividing line between east and west and a modern and liberal minded metropolis. Founded in 1550 by Swedish king Gustav I as a as a trading centre and in 1812, Csar Alexander I made it the capital of the Principality of Finland.
The Senaatintori is located in the centre of the city. The square is dominated by a monument and surrounded by a number of fine Neo-Classical buildings. Csar Alexander II included public, ecclesiastical and academic buildings in the square, including government offices, a cathedral and university.
Uspenski Cathedral is situated at the city's southern harbor and is the largest Russian Orthodox church in both western and northern Europe. Built in 1868 according to traditional Russian design its exterior is of red brick and it is crowned by 13 gilded domes.
The Finlandia Talo is Helsinki's concert and congress centre, a work of art that encapsulates the building and design philosophy of Alvar Aalto, one of Finland's most prominent architects of the 20th century. The white-colored opera house was completed in 1993. It was a daring project as the city's treasury was empty! But music reigned supreme and today the building is an important part of the city's cultural life.
Helsinki is a captivating city and has rightly been declared Europe's capital of culture.

Founded in 1550 by Swedish king, Gustav Vasa, as a trading centre, in 1812 Tsar Alexander The First made it the capital of the Principality Of Finland. Turku is the oldest city in Finland and is the country’s first capital city from where Finnish culture was born. It is still evocative of the Middle Ages. The sea, a magnificent island landscape and picturesque timber houses are typical of one of the oldest cities in the Gulf Of Bothnia, Uusikaupunki. It was there in 1712 that a peace treaty was signed between Russia and Sweden and this small, quiet town has a long maritime history. Further north is a town of seafarers and traders, Kokkola, of which the old town boasts the largest number of timber built houses in Finland. The cleric, Anders Chydenius, once lived here and laid the foundation of Liberalism, the freedom of both religion and trade. Oulu is the flourishing centre of Northern Finland. Along with its many green areas this city by the sea comes alive during the spring and summer months. Despite the harsh climate, tropical plants are popular in the city. The hilly landscape of the spacious Pallas Ounastunturi National Park is located in the north west, close to the Swedish border. Yellow-green reindeer moss and dense layers of many other varieties grow on the seemingly endless hills of primeval stone and gneiss. The plant life of this region always surprises those who encounter it for the first time. Finland is a country that boasts more lakes than any other. It is full of picturesque, natural beauty, unique cultural treasures and historic locations: a tranquil paradise set in the extreme north.

After a few hours at Tivoli Gardens, continue your Copenhagen sightseeing in the city proper. Copenhagen is like something out of a fairy tale, full of multicolored houses and boats that tie up at Copenhagen’s wharves.
Next, rent a bike. With almost 250 miles of bicycle lanes, getting around two wheels is a healthy, athletic way to get to know the city. Ride your bike to Nyhavn, a waterfront district that dates back to the 17th century. This is the spot to make friends at the local pubs, or to simply sit and watch the boats go back and forth over the waters of the Oresund. Nyhavn is also home to “The Little Mermaid,” a statue fashioned after the titular character in the Hans Christian Andersen tale. Make sure you bring your camera, as the mermaid is a popular place for a photo op.

Helsinki may be small but it packs a big punch and is one of the more accessible European capitals. A cosmopolitan vibe pervades the city, museums and theatres abound, the tidy streets are packed with bars, restaurants and cafés, and nothing is more than a short tram ride away from the centre.
Helsinki has a character that perfectly reflects its geographical location, on the historical fault-line between the Swedish and Russian empires. Although the Finnish capital is unmistakably Scandinavian, the architecture and the psyche of its inhabitants show the clear influence of mother Russia.
Another intrinsic part of the city's personality is the sea and all that comes with it; Helsinki boasts 315 islands and almost a 100km (60 miles) of coastline, at its most beautiful in the summer. There are a plethora of maritime attractions from Suomenlinna sea fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to cruises enabling visitors to explore the best of the archipelago, to Pihlajasaari and Uunisaari islands for gorgeous beaches. Its proximity to the ocean means Helsinki's seafood restaurants are bountiful -- try perch, whitefish, pikeperch and salmon served with new potatoes in summertime, while the legendary crayfish season starts in August.
In fact, when it comes to dining out, Helsinki has upped its game. "New Nordic Cuisine" (experimental, innovative cooking) has been adopted by numerous small, trendy restaurants and up and coming chefs, while a wave of popup restaurants has increased the diverse flavour of the city's dining scene. All things foodie are celebrated during Restaurant Day, now held four times a year, while the new Abbatoir encapsulates the city's dynamic food culture by showcasing cutting edge restaurants and food-related events. Visit Market Square and Esplanade Park for street food, the Hietalahti Market Hall flea market held every Sunday and sip coffee at one of the city's ubiquitous open air cafes.
In the summer, enjoy at picnic at Winter Garden, stroll along Ruoholahti canal, spend the day brushing up on your strokes at Kumpula Outdoor Swimming Pool or partake in that quintessential Finnish experience; the sauna. Kotiharju sauna the oldest public wood sauna in the city, dates back 70 years where the tradition of completing your visit with a lashing from a birch twig still thrives.
If you need advice whilst exploring the city, look out for the Helsinki Helpers, easily identifiable by their green vests, who patrol the inner city and cruise harbours from June until the end of August.
For outdoor lovers, there are plenty other activities: in summer, try fishing, cycling, golfing or head for the new Finnish Nature Centre in nearby Nuuksio National Park. Built entirely of wood and resembling a bird, the environmentally-friendly building opened in 2013 and showcases the best of nature using sounds, lights and scents. The centre is also the gateway to some fabulous hiking trails.
In winter, enjoy ice skating, skiing and snowboarding. In the city itself, there are also 180km of groomed crosscountry skiing trails, with the best are located in Central Park (Keskuspuisto), proving that Helsinki is a year round destination.

The center itself showcases winners of the award, and highlights their impact on the world at large. After spending an afternoon wandering the center, prepare yourself for an evening of extraordinary live performances, as the Oslo Opera House is just a short walk away. This majestic building, with its sloping roofs and massive wall of windows, has been compared to an iceberg in appearance. Revisiting Finland - aside from getting married - was the highlight of our summer. We had a chance to spend time in Helsinki again while spending the majority of our days engaging in outdoors activities including kayaking, biking, cycling, walking, boating and horseback riding to name just a few. Overall, this trip included some of our favorite things to do in Finland.
We also took the time to film taste testing various types of Finnish Cuisine and Finnish foods including Salmiakki, Finnish licorice, Finnish chocolate and others. Here is our complete playlist of our adventure:
