Composer: Victorin de Joncières (1839–1903)
Libretto: Henri de Bornier & Armand Silvestre, after Friedrich Schiller’s incomplete play ‘Demetrius’
First performed: Théâtre-Lyrique, Paris, 5 May 1876
SETTING: Russia, 1605–06

No. 9 – Rêverie : ‘Pâles étoiles’
Marina Mnishek looks up at the stars, and hopes that Dimitri’s and her love will triumph. Since this is a French grand opéra, this is unlikely.
Marina Mnishek is a far more sympathetic character here than in Mussorgsky's opera. Mussorgsky's Marina is a wholly political animal, who seduces Dmitry to gain power in Russia and spread Catholicism. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nTyNH…)

Marina (soprano) : Gabrielle Philiponet
Dmitri (tenor): Philippe Talbot
Dmitriy has been raised as a monk named Vasili. In Act I, he is reunited with his beloved Marina in Poland.
The background is complex even for opera: Marina’s father promised her to the Count of Lysberg; Dmitri killed the Count in a duel and was imprisoned, but released by Vanda, the King of Poland's cousin, who wants to marry him for power. Marina’s father wants to kill Dmitri; Marina ran away from her father, and, accompanied by a group of gypsies, has gone looking for Dmitri.

Victorin Joncières epitomises the Romantic artist fascinated by nobility and grandeur. This is clear from the titles of his works alone: Sardanapale, Lancelot, Le Dernier Jour de Pompéi, Le Chevalier Jean, Dimitri. Listening to the latter, his masterpiece (1876), we realise too that he was a contemporary of Gounod and a champion of Wagner. Dimitri carries on the tradition, begun by Meyerbeer, of spectacular, monumental works. It takes the listener from a monastery near the River Don to a palace in Krakow, then to the castle of Wyksa and to the Kremlin in Moscow. At the time it was written, Bayreuth, Orange and Béziers were about to turn opera into a popular art with mass appeal.

Libretto: Henri de Bornier & Armand Silvestre, after Friedrich Schiller’s incomplete play ‘Demetrius’
First performed: Théâtre-Lyrique, Paris, 5 May 1876
SETTING: Russia, 1605–06
The False Dmitry overthrew Boris Godunov and seized the Russian throne in 1605 with Polish backing; he was murdered in 1606. The pretender claimed to be Dmitriy Ivanovich, the son of Ivan the Terrible, who survived an assassination attempt.
No. 19 – Arioso: ‘Mon fils, il est mon fils’

In Joncières’s opera, Dmitriy’s supposed mother is Marpha. Although Ivan IV married Marpha Sobakina, she died two weeks after marrying the Tsar in 1571. Ivan’s widow, and the mother of the tsarevitch Dmitriy, was Maria Nagaya. After Dmitriy’s death in 1591, Boris Godunov accused Maria of criminal negligence and made her take the veil.
Job, patriarch of Moscow, visits Marpha in the castle of Vyksa. He tells her that an impostor is claiming to be Dmitriy, and that Boris wants her to stop the revolt by denouncing the impostor. Marpha refuses; Dmitriy is her son, and she detests Boris. At last the day of vengeance is at hand!
